The Flicky is a creature that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They were a kind of colorful Mobini bird race that lived almost exclusively on the atoll called Flicky Island or the other-dimensional Flicky Zone.[2] They were described as the most endangered aviary species on Mobius.[1]

Description[]

Anatomy[]

Flickies were small and rotund birds with three-toed feet. They had round-shaped heads with two large eyes, soft beaks and hair tuffs on their heads. Their wings were medium-sized compared to their bodies which were usually smaller than their heads, and their tails consisted of delicate feathers. In terms of markings, they had a dark patch across the eyes, differently colored bellies, and, at times, colored cheeks.

Flickies generally came in four breeds which had their own distinct shapes, colorations, and even hairstyles each. However, these were not uniform looks for all Flickies as certain individuals could have their own unique plumages and hair styles. These four breeds include:

  • Light blue ones with orange cheek markings and bellies, and brown eyes. They also had a tassel in their hair above the foreheads.
  • Green, bulky ones with a big bun in the middle of their heads, orange bellies and green eyes.
  • Pink and purple ones with a pony tail on both sides of their heads and a strain of hair on their foreheads. They also had heart-shaped tan bellies and green eyes.
  • Red ones with blue eyes, mullets, orange bellies, and hair spikes on their foreheads.

During Operation: Clean Sweep, another breed of Flickies appeared. These Flickies were similar to the light blue breed, but with a darker plumage, no orange belly, rosy cheeks and smaller tassels.

Characteristics and culture[]

Like actual birds, the Flickies could only speak in a language consisting of chirps and tweets (which initially sounded like the name of their species).[3] Although recognized as non-sentient, the Flickies showed at times striking insight. Peaceful and friendly, Flicky birds feeded on the strange bejeweled plants of their home. Most notable was the natural predators, of which they had none. Consequentially, they did not fear strangers and were very curious.[2][3]

Powers and abilities[]

When Flickies gathered in flocks, it is said they were able to create Warp Rings to other Zones.[2] Also, being non-anthropomorphic birds, the Flickies were able to fly using their wings.

History[]

Sonic Blast[]

Flickybots

Robotnik with his Flickiebots, from Sonic Blast.

Flickies were first seen after Sonic the Hedgehog responded to a distress call on Flicky Island. Dr. Ivo Robotnik had enslaved the island, roboticized the Flickies, and was looking for a Chaos Emerald. Sonic soon found out that the Flickiebots were weak to seawater as they reverted to their flesh and blood forms when hit with it. While Tails and Rotor sprayed the robots, Sonic then tracked Robotnik to the Flicky Zone. There, Sonic engaged and trashed Robotnik's newest weapon, the Techno Bodyshell Battlesuit. Regardless, Robotnik managed to trap Sonic and locate the Chaos Emerald (on the forehead of a giant Flicky statue), but failed to realize the emerald was booby trapped. Removing the emerald caused the giant Flicky statue to come to life, and roar loudly enough to collapse the whole Zone. Sonic and Robotnik barely made it out of the Zone. Robotnik tried to keep his hand on the emerald, but a pink Flicky bit Robotnik's hand. By then, the Flicky robots had all been deroboticized, the roboticizer was destroyed, and all of the Flickies had apparently flown back into the Zone, except for one pink Flicky that watched Robotnik throw a temper tantrum for having no way off the island.[3]

Sonic Adventure and aftermath[]

Birdy

Birdy, from Sonic the Hedgehog #81.

During the Chaos Crisis, a green Flicky was pursued by two of Dr. Eggman's ZERO robots. The Flicky eventually followed Amy Rose around, who had come to the bird's aid when it was injured.[4] Both Amy and "Birdy" were brought on board the Egg Carrier as prisoners, but were subsequently let free by Gamma, who when observing Birdy and Amy's willingness to help each other, decided to go against his programming.[5] Later, Amy helped Birdy reunite with its own kind, while the Flicky contained within E-102 Gamma was later released when he was destroyed by E-123 Omega.[6][7][8]

Flicky sightings would later appear over Knothole City, although these Flickies are speculated to be an entirely new flock different from the ones on Flicky Island.[2]

Genesis[]

When reality was reset as a result of Operation: Clean Sweep, at least one Flicky appeared in the alternate reality that resulted. After being saved by Sonic, this Flicky communicated with Sally Acorn, who was able to speak its language. At Sally's request, it assisted them by serving as the power source for a Buzzbomber robot, which led them to Eggman and then attacked him in defense of its new friends.[9]

Note: From this point, the Flickies' history continues from their new life in the altered timeline.

Trivia[]

  • The Flickies are based on the species of the same name that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
  • Hyper Tails is able to manifest Flicky familiars that will attack at his command, similar to his video game counterpart.
  • In the comic books with their all-capital lettering, the Flickies' name is usually spelled with a lowercase "I" (FLiCKY), probably to avoid disastrous consequences if the uppercase L and I blur together and are mistaken for an uppercase U.
