The Fireball Cannon[citation needed] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of cannon that fires fireballs.

Description

Fireball Cannons are found in fire-themed Zones. In gameplay, they shoot fireballs in a straight line from time to time.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)

A Fireball Cannon in Marble Zone, from Sonic the Hedgehog (1991).

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Fireball Cannons are first seen in Marble Zone, where they are thin, purple-colored cannons attached to the walls and ceilings. The boss of Marble Zone, the Egg Scorcher, has a Fireball Cannon attached to it as well. Fireball Cannons later make an appearance in Star Light Zone, where they are slightly wider and green-colored.

In gameplay, Fireball Cannons shoot fireballs every third second. These fireballs will damage the player upon contact, although they will not inflict damage if the playable character is Invincible. In addition, due to the fireballs being fire-based obstacles, the playable character becomes immune to them if they use a Flame Shield in the 2013 re-release of the game.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

In Sonic & Knuckles, and its lock-on version Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, Fireball Cannons appears in Lava Reef Zone Act 1, where they serve the same function to launch fireballs in the air, damaging the player on contact. However, if the playable character uses a Flame Shield, they cannot get damaged.

Sonic Mania

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Fireball Cannons appear in Lava Reef Zone. They function exactly as they did in previous titles and once again, the player can equip themselves with the Flame Shield to avoid taking damage.
