The Fire Whirl takes the form of a fiery tornado that is launched by the user.
In gameplay, the Fire Whirl can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Blaze. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Fire Whirl if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned user.
When used, the Fire Whirl will slowly travel down the lane it was deployed on until its duration expires or it travels off course. While it moves slow, it lasts longer than most other Projectile Items. In addition, the Fire Whirl can travel through all obstacles and continue forward after hitting other players. Opponents hit by the Fire Whirl will be slowed down heavily and lose lots of Rings. Players also have a chance to find two Fire Whirls in an Item Box instead of one if their level is at least 6, and three Fire Whirls at level 12.
In order to avoid the Fire Whirl, the player's only option is to step out of its lane.
