Fire is a recurring element in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It acts most commonly as hazards in fire themed stages, but has also occasionally served as power-ups and special moves.


Hazards and obstacles

Fire usually appear as obstacles encountered throughout the various levels in the Sonic series. When a playable character makes contact with such fire without protection, the player will take damage. Having a Flame Shield will protect the player from almost all these hazards.

Sometimes, lava pools will erupt balls of fire into the air to obstruct the player's path. If the player is not careful when jumping, these fireballs will collide with them. There are also enemy robots or traps that shoot fire balls horizontally at the player, such as certain cannons or gargoyles.

Enemy attacks

Fire Breaths attack with fire.

Certain enemies and bosses are able to spray fire as their mean of attacking the player. Some spray fire directly from a nozzle (like Fire Breaths) or surround themselves with fire for defense (like the Gohlas). Some foes can also manipulate fire more delicately, such as Fire Masters or the Dark Gaia Phoenix.

Lava/Magma pools

Molten lava or magma is one of the most common hazards in fire-themed stages, which are usually found inside volcanos. While one can stand and run on lava/magma without falling into a bottomless pit, it will still cause the player harm. However, it is possible to walk safely on lava/magma with a Flame Shield, thus granting crossing to various areas.

Attacks and powers

In a number of games, Fire has been incorporated as a special power or gimmick that the player can use in conjunction with their attacks for more potency or as a separate power/powerup to enhance the player's performance.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)

Fire was first weaponized in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). The Marble Zone is located on active volcanic lands where lava pits and cannons spew fireballs. The local boss fight involves as well Dr. Eggman dropping fireballs on stone platforms which the player has to avoid by jumping over lava pits.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the lock-on game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, in the Angel Island Zone, both the local sub-boss and boss use flames as their primary means to attack the player. Lava Reef Zone is also filled with lava and fire falls. The game introduced as well the Flame Shield, a variant of the Shield which neutralizes damage from fire-based hazards and attacks.

Sonic Adventure

In Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, Red Mountain has flames that blast out of the mouths on statues and cracks in the terrain in intervals. Inside the mountain, there is also lava pools everywhere.

Sonic Advance

In Sonic Advance, fireballs jump out of the lava pits in the Secret Base Zone.

Sonic Heroes

In Sonic Heroes, the Fire Combination is utilized in the Power Formation of each team. Knuckles, Big, Omega or Vector will take their allies as extnetions of themselves to attack with, often throwing them in Spin Attack while they are charged with fire. Fire Combination allows use of most attacks named after fire.

Fireballs are scattered in a number of positions in the level Power Plant. It also features an energy tank lava hazard encountered by Team Sonic and Team Dark that rises as the team climbs to the top. The platforms will also be forced to sink when the lava level rises near them.

Shadow the Hedgehog

In Shadow the Hedgehog, flames are found in numerous levels. They act as hazards, but will disappear after harming the player. If the player puts out the flames without hurting themselves, their Hero Gauge and hero score will be increased. Lava and fire also appear as hazards in Lava Shelter, the game's only fire-themed stage. There are also harmful fire hoops in Circus Park which grant the player Rings if they pass through them properly.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), many Iblis minions attack with flames and fire, including Iblis itself. Crisis City and Flame Core also include a number of fire hazards, such as the Explosion Trap. The latter in particular is covered in lava pits.

Sonic Rush Adventure

In Sonic Rush Adventure, Fire can be used as a playable attack when sailing aboard the Ocean Tornado. The player can spew fire from a flamethrower during trips to take out enemies and obstacles as well as collecting Rings more easily.

Sonic Rivals series

In Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2, Fire is one of the games' Power-Up that can be used both offensively and defensively depending on whether the player is losing or winning respectively. When used offensively, it will shoot a flame that tracks down the opponent, and when used defensively, it will create a shield of fire that will protect the player from one attack.

Sonic and the Secret Rings

In Sonic and the Secret Rings, Red Ma Djinns attack by spewing fire while spinning. The fight against the Ifrit Golem as well take place above a pool of lava. Additionally, ships in Pirate Storm also hurl flaming canonballs at the player, often engulfing the environment in fire for additional hazards. During the game's story, Sonic is also struck by a curse called the Flame of Judgment which slowly burns his life force away with a flame.

Aside from hazards, Fire is one of the elements usable by Sonic alongside Dark and Wind. Fire-type Skills focus more on adding increased power to Sonic's attacks. Skills with Fire attributes include:

  • Fire Tackle: Increased attack power when performing a Short Jump.
  • Sub-F Tackle: Attack power increased during a Short Jump but defense is greatly reduced.
  • Fire Gaze: Increased attack power when performing Jump Cancel.
  • Sub F-Gaze: Attack power increased during a Jump Cancel but defense is greatly reduced.
  • Turbo Jump: Increases flight speed while using Jump Dash.
  • Boost Jump: Jump distance improved over Turbo Jump.
  • Rocket Jump: Jump distance improved over Boost Jump.
  • H-Expand: Extends the range of Homing Attacks.
  • H-High Expand: Extends attack range further than H-Expand.
  • H-Mega Expand: Extends attack range further than H-High Expand.
  • Fire Lock-On: Allows Homing Attack when locked-on to Fire Soul.
  • Homing Stability: Decreases recovery time after performing Homing Attack.
  • Homing Balance: Decreases recovery time more than with Homing Stability.
  • Homing Recovery: Decreases recovery time more than with Homing Balance.
  • Volcano Slider: Increases attack power while sliding.
  • Fire Step: Increased attack power granted to Back Step.
  • Crest of Fire: Unlocks the power of fire if you equip 6 fire-based skills.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Fire is one of the elements in the game's combat system. Some POW Moves such as the Blazing Tornado and Flamethrower deal Fire damage though each character can utilize Fire in their basic attacks if they are equipped with the Pyraz Chao. Robots and Kron are resistant to fire while N'rrgal, Voxai, Zoah and other organic opponents are weak against it. Korus is able to grant protection against fire. Unlike the other elements of the game, it does not have an equipable ring that grants characters fire to basic attacks.

Sonic Unleashed

In Sonic Unleashed, several enemies utilize fire to attack the player, such as the Fire Masters and the Dark Gaia Phoenix. On the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version in particular, getting hit by fire will set Sonic the Werehog ablaze for a short while, causing his health to steady deplete until the fire goes out or Sonic is dowsed in water. The game also includes fire as a hazard, with nozzles in various Stages spewing out fire.

Sonic and the Black Knight

In Sonic and the Black Knight, the Earth Dragon attacks the player from afar with various forms of fireballs, such as massive and superfast ones, or smaller and widespread ones. Explosion Traps also appear in the Molten Mine and The Cauldron, except they gush out lava instead of fire.

Sonic Generations

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, a reimagined version of Crisis City appeared with all its fire-themed elements included, such as Explosion Traps, lava pools, and fire-using enemies.

Sonic Lost World

In Sonic Lost World, lava pools and fireballs appears in abundance in Lava Mountain, alongside bottomless pits designed as rising lava pools. Moreover, during the last boss battles against him, Zavok will breathe fireballs at the player.

Sonic Jump Fever

In Sonic Jump Fever , whenever Blaze the Cat performs a Double Jump, she emits waves of fire that travel either side of her which destroys enemies in their path.
