The Land of the Sky (天の大地 Ten no Daichi?) is a location that appears in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. It is a series of continents located in the sky of Planet Freedom. It is where Sonic the Hedgehog and the majority of Planet Freedom's population live.

Description[]

The Land of the Sky consists of various floating continents and islands, many of which are lush and green and covered with clear, tropical water. Due to the floating landmasses being separated from each other, aircrafts are often needed to travel between the landmasses. A vast glacier keeps the Land of the Sky suspended above the Land of Darkness and anchors it to Planet Freedom, with rivers of magma running through each continent like blood vessels. If the aforementioned glacier were to melt, the landmasses in the Land of the Sky would be separate from each other, and, combined with the rotation of the planet, be sent hurtling into space where they would be torn to pieces.

Most of the planet's populace appears to reside in the Land of the Sky. The South Island region contains several large and futuristic city-like settlements, governed by the President. South Island's inhabitants consist of various kinds of anthropomorphic animals, ranging from Sonic, who is mostly animal-like, to Sara, who is mostly human with animal features, and her father the President, who is mostly human but has pointed ears and a snout-like nose.

Like in the Land of Darkness, Warp Zones can be found in the Land of the Sky.

History[]

Past[]

In the past, the Land of the Sky was originally a series of mountains on Planet Freedom. There, the people that lived on the Land of Darkness rebuilt their cities due to a disaster. Eventually, the mountains would be separate from the surface of Planet Freedom and start floating on the sky, therefore forming the Land of the Sky.[citation needed]

On numerous occasions, Dr. Robotnik has tried to conquer (or destroy) the Land of the Sky, only for his plans to be foiled by Sonic and his friends every time.

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie[]

Welcome to Robotropolis[]

Taking over the Presidential House and holding the President and his daughter Sara hostage, Robotnik tricked Sonic and Tails to go on a mission down from the Land of the Sky and into the Land of Darkness in order for Robotnik to copy Sonic's data with the Robot Generator and complete Hyper Metal Sonic with it.

Sonic Vs. Metal Sonic!![]

After Hyper Metal Sonic's completion, he came to the Land of the Sky and attacked several settlements on South Island, such as Green Lake City and Forest Town, before heading to the North Pole.

At the North Pole, Robotnik intended to use Metal to unearth one of the Land of the Sky's magma rivers and melt the glacier keeping the continents anchored to Planet Freedom. However Knuckles the Echidna was able to dig a hole to redirect the lava into a canyon and back into the ground, and after the President and Old Man Owl's arrived at the North Pole, Sonic defeated Metal.

In other media[]

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Land of the Sky was a region on Planet Freedom, formed after Chaos Knuckles altered reality. However, its existence was short-lived, as history would return to normal shortly after the Land of the Sky's creation.
