Fortunately, this led to the discovery of the key the heroes were searching for, which falls out of the tree Luigi hit. However, it gets stolen by the Boo. Luigi gives chase to the Boo and initiates the "Get the key!" mini-game. If Luigi gets the key in less than forty seconds, the Boo runs away to report what happened to King Boo. When the player later clears the ice walls at Polastraits, King Boo will appear, angry over that the Boo told him that Luigi upset them in Sparkleton. Luigi subsequently challenges King Boo to an Alpine Skiing GS event, which the former wins, prompting King Boo to run away.

Mario Sonic London 3DS Story Mode 357

Luigi, Mario, Sonic, and Tails face off against their imposters, from the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Luigi belongs to the Heroes class and can only take part in sports events selected for this class. During the events of the mode, Luigi and Mario arrived in London for the Olympic Games, only to find a colored fog enveloping the city. Finding Toad collapsed in the Main Stadium, Luigi and Mario came across Fog Imposters of Sonic and Tails, whom they defeated, which made them disappear. Seeking to lift the fog by defeating more Fog Imposters, Luigi, Mario, and Toad set off with Omochao into the thickest part of the fog. There, they found Dry Bowser and a Dry Bones, whom they defeated in an event. Afterward, Luigi and Mario destroyed the local Fog Machine spreading the fog, thus clearing the area of the fog. Noticing that Hyde Park was still foggy however, Luigi and Mario went there to investigate. Upon their arrival, they found Peach, Daisy, Amy, and Blaze, who had already cleared the area of the fog. Following then a lead from Rouge, Luigi and Mario went to the British Museum to discover the truth behind the mysterious fog. On their way to the museum, they met Sonic and Tails, with whom they joined forces with to destroy the remaining Fog Machines. They soon after managed to clear the grounds of the British Museum by defeating Eggman Nega and destroying his Fog Machine. In the museum, the heroes discovered that the fog came from an Fog urn in which the Phantasmal Fog was sealed up in. Now, however, it was being used by Dr. Eggman and Bowser. When Charmy Bee then returned from some reconnaissance, Luigi and his friends decided to split up and find the bad guys and their Fog Machines in different parts of the city. At the London Tennis Club, Luigi and Charmy found Waluigi challenging Metal Sonic. After Waluigi beat Metal Sonic, Luigi and Charmy followed them to Eton Dorney. Here, they saw Waluigi and Wario defeat Eggman and Metal Sonic, before destroying their Fog Machine. Leaving Eggman in Wario and Waluigi's hands, Luigi returned to the stadium, with the fog having been removed from everywhere around London, where he told his friends about everything.

Sometime later, the fog returned, this time spreading over all of London with increased intensity. Luigi, Mario, Sonic, and Tails later rescued Cream and Cheese from their fog imposters at the stadium. Afterward, the group and Omega traveled to Stonehenge to follow a clue from an amnesiac Omega. There, the heroes found the lid for the Fog urn, which they took with them. Omega, who had regained his memory files, also informed them that Eggman and Bowser had set up their base inside Big Ben. The heroes subsequently went there while defeating more Fog Imposters, but Toad could not go any further, so he was taken away by Omega. Luigi, Mario, Sonic, and Tails then traveled to Big Ben, where they faced Eggman and Bowser, who were empowered by the Phantasmal Fog. However, Sonic and Mario managed to win the clash. Mario and Sonic then destroyed the Master Fog Machine, returned the Phantasmal Fog to its urn and sealed it. After the fog was gone, Eggman and Bowser explained that they wanted revenge for not being invited to the Olympic Games. It turned out, however, that their invitations had been lost, but they could still take part in the competition if they signed up in time. Later, Luigi attended the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, a badge of Luigi can also be obtained from the badge machine.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[]

In the Nintendo Switch version and arcade version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Luigi appears as a playable character.

TailsInTokyo

Luigi with Tails and the gang, from Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

In the Nintendo Switch version of the game, Luigi plays a role in the story mode. In this mode, Luigi met with Sonic, Mario, and Toad when Toad brought Sonic and Mario a gaming system called the Tokyo '64 sent to them from an anonymous sender. While Luigi was holding the Tokyo '64 however, Dr. Eggman and Bowser barged in on the scene. Frighten by the villains' arrival, Luigi accidentally activated the Tokyo '64, causing Sonic, Mario, Eggman, Bowser, and Toad to get sucked into the device. Unsure of what to do, Luigi consulted an Omochao, who suggested he sought out Tails. During his search, he met Amy, who convinced Luigi to compete against her for an event. Afterward, she told Luigi that Tails went to Nippon Budokan and joined his search. At Nippon Budokan, Luigi learned Tails had left for the Ariake Gymnastics Centre with Daisy. There, after Amy had a round with Daisy in an event, Luigi told them of why he sought Tails, prompting Daisy to join his search. With Tails having parted ways from Daisy earlier, Luigi and co. tracked him to the Ariake Urban Sports Park. There, Luigi was convinced by Tails to compete against him in an event. Afterward, Tails learned of Sonic, Mario, and Toad's situation.

After Tails discovered their friends were competing against Eggman and Bowser inside the Tokyo '64, Bowser Jr. came and took the device from Luigi. Forced to search the other venues for Bowser Jr., Luigi and Tails went in search of passes to the venues. They soon found Silver, whom had passes, but had dropped them elsewhere. After Tails retrieved them, Silver let them keep them, and joined Tails and Luigi on their mission. Traveling to the Aomi Urban Sports Park, they faced Bowser Jr. (who had found a temporary ally in Rouge). While Bowser Jr. refused to hand the Tokyo '64 over, Rouge challenged Daisy to decide who got the Tokyo '64. Though Luigi's ally won, Bowser Jr. ran away again. Luigi and his crew later found Bower Jr. in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, now being guarded by Wendy. After Wendy was beaten by Silver though, Bowser Jr. ran off to find Eggman Nega. Afterward, Luigi and Tails found Bowser Jr. and Eggman Nega in Nippon Budoka with the Tokyo '64, In an attempt to get the device back, Luigi challenged Eggman Nega to an event. Though Luigi won and nearly got the Tokyo '64 back, Bowser Jr. intervened and told Eggman Nega to investigate it. After Eggman Nega realized it was made by Eggman and that there were people inside it, he ran off with the Tokyo '64 and Bowser Jr. to analyze it further in order to get the villains out and trap the heroes in it forever. After the pair had left, Luigi and Tails met an Omochao who suggested they asked Vector for help.

Finding Vector in the Olympic Stadium, Luigi and Tails told him the situation. However, Vector would not fulfill Luigi's request unless he got a fee or one of them would compete against him in an event. After Vector had a match with Tails, he agreed to help and began rounding up people to help them before splitting them up to search for Eggman Nega and Bowser Jr.. While Luigi and Tails asked a purple Toad at Tokyo Tower and an Omochao at Tokyo Station, the latter suggested finding Eggman Nega in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. There, they saw that Vector already found them, but all three of them were too late, seeing that Eggman Nega had already begun his analysis on the Tokyo '64. After the heroes were forced to wait and compete with Zazz, Eggman Nega declared that there was no way to free the people inside the Tokyo '64. Upon Vector's insistence though, Eggman Nega remembered that gold medals might have an effect inside the game. Believing gold medals could free their friends, Luigi and Tails left to get medals while Eggman Nega analyzed the Tokyo '64 further. They first found Espio, whom they convince to help them. After he was beaten by Amy, they got his medal. Afterward, Luigi and Tails found Yoshi at the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and helped him find his friends. In return, Yoshi gave them passes to compete in more events with. In addition, Yoshi joined them after hearing of their mission. At the Sea Forest Waterway, Luigi and Tails found Wario and Waluigi, whom they competed against. After the heroes won, Wario and Waluigi joined their crew. While glad to have more people on their side, Luigi and Tails were suspicious of the duo's motives. Afterward, they met Bowser Jr. in Yumenoshima Park Archery Field. There, Bowser Jr. tried to steal Tails and Luigi's medals, but Vector stepped in to stop him. As they argued however, Peach arrived to belittler Bowser Jr.'s behavior. After Luigi told Peach their story, Peach agreed to help Luigi and Tails by earning medals for them. Eventually, Peach got more medals and convinced Bowser Jr. to hand the medals he had stolen over to Luigi. Afterward, the heroes received a pass to the Olympic Boxing Centre from Peach, who joined Luigi and Tails' crew. There, they found Bowser Jr. negotiating with Zavok to win the Boxing match for him. After Zavok agreed to Bowser Jr.'s deal, Luigi stepped in to face Zavok despite Tails' warnings. After Luigi beat Zavok, Luigi and his crew return to Eggman Nega with their medals to see if Eggman Nega had found anything new.

Upon their arrival, Luigi and Tails learned that it was the gold medals in the game that were needed to escape the Tokyo '64, not the real ones. After Eggman Nega and Bowser Jr. then messed with the Tokyo '64, Bowser Jr. ran off with the device. After Luigi and Tails got it back from Bowser Jr. though, they noticed that the Tokyo '64 was running out of battery. Tails and Vector then deducted that this meant that those inside the system would disappear once the battery ran out. Having figured this out long ago, Eggman Nega made the Excitement Battery, a battery where Magikoopa's magic would allow it to never lose charge once it was filled up. Thinking that the Magikoopa should be done applying magic to it, Luigi and Tails left to retrieve it while leaving Eggman Nega and Vector to watch the Tokyo '64. At the TOKYO SKYTREE, the duo found the Excitement Battery in Larry's possession. Disregarding the duo's explanations, Larry distracted them with an army of Shy Guys before running off with the Excitement Battery. However, he also dropped passes to new venues for Luigi and Tails to use. At the Equestrian Park, the heroes convinced Larry to hand the battery over after they beat him. Upon receiving the battery, they noticed that it charged up from the cheer and excitement of the audience. Luigi and Tails thus decided to compete in more events across other venues to fully charge the Excitement Battery.

In the Tokyo Stadium, Luigi and his crew found Diddy Kong, whom they got to play in a match against Wario, thus charging up the Excitement Battery a little more. Following Diddy Kong's advice, the crew then headed to Musashino Forest Sport Plaza. There, they met Knuckles and Shadow, who helped with their mission by competing against Peach and Yoshi. This provided more charge for the Excitement Battery. In addition, Knuckles and Shadow joined Luigi and Tails' team. Taking Knuckles' advice, the team then headed to the Olympic Stadium where they got Jet and Knuckles to compete and create more charge for the Excitement Battery. Having run out of passes though, Luigi and Tails went in search of more. Finding Donkey Kong at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building being harassed by Metal Sonic and Egg Pawns, they made a deal with him: they dealt with the robots, and Donkey Kong would give them his pass. After fulfilling their part of the agreement, the duo got Donkey Kong's pass for Makuhari Messe Hall B. There, Ludwig took the Excitement Battery from them and gave it to Wendy. However, the crew got the battery back after Waluigi beat Ludwig and the siblings decided not to get involved with it. Later, while looking for more passes, Luigi and Tails came across Blaze at the Kabukiza Theatre, with Egg Pawns blocking her way into the theater. Convincing her to let them have her pass if they got rid of the Egg Pawns, Tails took care of the Badniks. Blaze thus gave them her pass and joined them on their mission. Arriving at Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach, they found Rosalina holding a surfing competition to get the crowd cheering. There, the heroes finally got the Excitement Battery fully charged after Rosalina and Donkey Kong had a match.

Returning to the Olympic Stadium, Eggman Nega and Bowser Jr. were waiting with the Tokyo '64, its battery almost dead. Acting quickly, Luigi and Tails switched the batteries, thus saving Sonic, Mario, Eggman, Bowser and Toad, who soon after emerged from the Tokyo '64. Luigi then welcomed back his friends, but Eggman and Bowser wanted to settle the score with Sonic and Mario through a 100m event. With people joining on this event, Luigi decided to join it too since they have worked so hard on this mission from the start. After the event was over and the scores were settled, the Olympics could begin.

Luigi, from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Luigi makes his third appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series as a playable fighter. In this game, Luigi must be unlocked by completing any one of following objectives:

  • Play 22 VS. matches. Luigi must then be defeated on Luigi's Mansion.
  • Beat Classic Mode with no continues. Luigi must then be defeated on Luigi's Mansion.
  • Have Luigi join the player's party in the Subspace Emissary (Subspace (Part I)).

In gameplay, Luigi is a strong, middleweight character. He is mostly recognized by his fast, yet powerful attacks that can result in many reliable finishers that can achieve KOs at percentages under 100. Together with his well-chained attacks, these skills give him several efficient set-up moves and combos. He is also one of the few characters that can crawl. However, Luigi's downside is that he has mediocre mobility, floaty movements, slow dashes, and very slow movements in the air that make it difficult to get near opponents. His attacks also have extremely poor reach. He likewise has low traction that causes him to slide considerable distances when he is blocking attacks with his shield, limited shield punishing options, and a less-than-effective projectile attack that is both slow and short-ranged. To make matters worse, all of these drawbacks to Luigi supplement his weakness in the field of mobility and movements. He is also crippled by the game's missing ability to air dodge diagonally into the ground for a short forward slide, as his traction issues greatly exacerbate his approach and make his maneuverability a handful to control, causing him to be at a disadvantage against characters that possess disjoined hitboxes and strong camping abilities.

In the Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, Luigi is one of the many characters from the World of Trophies that got caught up in the schemes of Tabuu and his minions, whom they would work to defeat together.

Luigi also appears in the game as several Trophies and Stickers:

Luigi, from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Luigi made his fourth appearance as a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series. In both versions of this game, Luigi is a starter character, making him available from the beginning.

In gameplay, Luigi is a middleweight character. In this game, Luigi's performance has overall improved: while his damage out is lowered, his mobility is now faster and he has received a new Final Smash that involves his Poltergust 5000. His most recognized attribute this time around however, is the utility of his various moves; in addition to retaining his great combo gameplay, his overall fast frame data makes it difficult to find an opening in his attacks to exploit. His excellent airborne attack gameplay is as well complemented by a number of ground attacks that have great chances at knocking an opponent into the air in favorable ways. He also has higher jumps and great utility of his aerial moves, which possess a number of favorable mechanics that support combo attacks, and his back aerial and clean neutral aerial moves are good options for performing KOs. Luigi's Fireball technique is now also fairly quick and possesses a respectable range, and his dashing speed has increased. In addition, Luigi's aerial game, and aerial mobility benefit from his heightened falling speed, higher gravity, lower short hop, and increased jumping height. Luigi's recovery also remains unpredictable, long-distanced and risky to intercept. Despite all these improvements however, Luigi retains his weaknesses from the previous title. His mobility, despite its improvements in this title, is still slow and awkward, his dashing speed is below average in performance, and his low traction and low air speed still hold him back in many regards. Also, excluding the Fireball, the range of Luigi's moveset is still mostly short. Luigi also now also scuttles during his jumping animation, making him more closely resemble his depiction in the main Mario series.

Each version of the game also comes with their own Trophies of Luigi:

And it doesn't just suck them up - it blows them around, draws them to you, and even helps you find them when they're hidden. Talk about convenient! No home should be without one. No Luigi should be without one, either. Collect 500 or more unique Trophies.
Paper Luigi PaperLuigiTrophy3DS Series Related Paper Luigi is Paper Mario's younger brother. He shows up from time to time during Paper Mario's quest for the Royal Stickers, but he doesn't stick around for long. Such a modest guy... I wonder what he's getting up to now! Paper Mario's little brother, Paper Luigi. While Mario is searching for the Royal Stickers, you might see Luigi here and there, just lounging around in the background. If you try to peel him away like a sticker, he runs off quick as a flash. What on earth are you playing at, Luigi? Random

Luigi in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Luigi made his fifth appearance as a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series. In this game, Luigi must be unlocked by completing any one of following objectives:

  • Play VS. matches, with Luigi being the 33rd character to be unlocked. Luigi must then be defeated on Luigi's Mansion.
  • Clear Classic Mode with Mario or any character in his unlock tree, being the 5th character unlocked after Ike. Luigi must then be defeated at Luigi's Mansion.
  • Have Luigi join the player's party in World of Light.

In gameplay, Luigi is a reasonable-sized, middleweight character. This time around, Luigi has a new Final Smash again that incorporates the Poltergust G-00. He has also received a new up tilt that is similar to Mario's and a new dashing, walking and running animation. He is also able to perform grab and throws on both the ground and in midair using his Poltergust G-00 as a tether grab. In addition, Luigi's up throw involves him ejecting his foes directly from his Poltergust G-00. His traction issues from previous games have also been improved, and many of his other attacks have been modified. Outside of changes to Luigi's attributes, Luigi has received an improvement in gameplay thanks to changes in the game's mechanics: his mobility has been increased in speed, the timing and landing lag for his short hop are faster, he can once again perform diagonal air dodges, his recovery has undergone an improvement, and he now has more attack options in different situations.

In the Adventure Mode of the game, "World of Light", Luigi was one of the many fighters (aside from Kirby, who had managed to escape) who got captured by Galeem so that he could clone them and create puppet fighters for evil spirits to control. Luigi was later one of the many fighters that fell under Dharkon's control upon Galeem's first defeat. During the Adventure Mode, several puppet fighters of Luigi are used for spirit battles. An evil version of Luigi can be fought and defeated so that the true Luigi can be awoken and join the fight to defeat Galeem and Dharkon.
