Description[]

Sunset City is a large city located at the coast of a bay. It has a large central hub with many buildings, both short and tall. The most noticeable characteristic part of the city is the its red, narrow bridge across the river at the bay that lies to the south. The bridge itself is located on the east side of the Grand Gold Flicky Hotel. It is also known for being a major merchant hub, which includes dazzling jewel markets. The landscapes on the outskirts of the city resemble Green Hill.[3]

Crisis City and Untold Tales of the Metal Virus[]

Annual2020Sunset City

Nite and Don listen to distressed calls as Sunset City falls victim to the Metal Virus, from Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2020.

When Dr. Eggman's Faceship headed towards Sunset City to create a Zombot outbreak there, Team Dark and Sonic the Hedgehog began heading to Sunset City to intercept Eggman.[2] In spite of the heroes' efforts though, a colossal Zombot outbreak erupted in Sunset City when Eggman unleashed his Metal Virus. Soon, the city was overrun by hordes of citizens transformed into Zombots. Nite the Owl tried beginning his radio show during these hours and got several calls from Sunset City civilians on how they were under attack by Zombots. After a Restoration representative got in touch with Nite, he used the show to broadcast an emergency message to survivors to gather at the Grand Gold Flicky Hotel.[4] Eventually, Shadow left on his own to find a transport to take the survivors away in. Later, when Sonic came to Sunset City and began searching for survivors, he tried to clear out some Zombots keeping some civilians trapped in a building. However, Omega beat Sonic to it. Sonic then tried to get Omega to go easy on the Zombots. Although Omega trumped Sonic's reasoning, his attacks appeared unable to really damage the Zombots. Rouge then appeared and told Sonic to bring the survivors to the Grand Gold Flicky Hotel, where they were organizing survivors. With Omega's help, Sonic got the survivors out of the building.[3]

When Sonic then arrived at the hotel after clearing a path to it for the survivors, Rouge was shown coordinating the city's officers, who held off the Zombots with Burst Wispons. There, Rouge noticed the Metal Virus gunk on Sonic, who revealed that he had been infected, but was able to keep his infection in check by running, and that Eggman was losing control over the Zombots. When the Zombots came after the fleeing survivors however, Sonic jumped into action and saved the survivors by keeping the Zombots at bay. Meanwhile, Omega was having trouble keeping the Zombots, who were coming from two directions, from advancing. Just as Sonic tried to help Omega though, Shadow arrived with a truck for the survivors, plowing through the Zombots in the way. Underneath the bridge that he drove over sat Big the Cat, who was upset that he could not find Froggy. He paid no attention to the Zombots that fell around him.[5] After then a brief argument with Shadow, Sonic left the city to burn his infection off, leaving Team Dark to evacuate the civilians. Shadow then had Omega safeguard the truck while Rouge oversaw the evacuation. In the meantime, Shadow engaged the Zombots. However, Shadow soon got infected from touching the Zombots. With Shadow unwilling to retreat, Rouge tried getting Omega to cover Shadow. Unfortunately, Omega was too busy keeping the Zombots away from the truck, and Shadow was soon overwhelmed by the sheer number of Zombots and became one himself. A moment later, Sonic came back, only to be attacked by a Zombot Shadow.[3]

SunsetCityZombots

Sonic prepares to fight the Sunset City Zombots, from Sonic the Hedgehog #20.

Sonic fought Shadow and soon checked in with Rouge to make sure that all the uninfected citizens were inside of the truck. Once all of the citizens were secured, Rouge drove off with them while Omega stayed behind to fight more Zombots. After Omega detected Sonic's infection growing, he requested for him to retreat. Sonic did not want to leave a friend behind but Omega denied that they actually were friends. Sonic requested for them both to retreat but Omega refused, rather wishing to be destroyed than run. Eventually, Omega sustained heavy damage to his torso and arms while Sonic was nearly overpowered by Shadow. Tails and Silver soon arrived at Sunset City via the Tornado and sought out Team Dark and Sonic. Once they found Sonic and Omega surrounded, Silver used his psychokinesis to hold up all of the Zombots there, clearing a path for Sonic to run and burn off his infection. Tails subsequently removed Omega's head from his damaged body. After Silver released all of the Zombots, Shadow lunged at him. Silver narrowly dodged this attack and fled the scene with Tails and Omega.[6]

All or Nothing[]

IDW27SunsetCity

Gemerl flies Cream out of Sunset City, from Sonic the Hedgehog #27.

Zeena soon visited Sunset City and took control over the many Zombots there, having them carry her around with a makeshift high chair. She found immense disappointment in the city's shopping offers, believing that it was a wasteland before she arrived. When Zeena asked an uninfected citizen why the shopping was not any better, he replied that nothing could suit something as radiant as her. She found this to be a good answer and told him that he would be spared for another hour, while the rest of them were to praise Zeena's name. Cream the Rabbit and Gemerl arrived in the city to intercept Zeena. She tried controlling Gemerl to attack Cream but after the robot managed to destroy his wireless, she controlled him with her tether ability instead. Zeena soon tossed the robot aside and tried to have Cream infected, only for Gemerl to return at full force and fight Zeena off. When Zeena tried taking control of Gemerl again with her tether ability, he and Cream used it to restrain her and take her Chaos Emerald. Following this, Gemerl threw Zeena to a group of Zombots, leaving her to get infected as she had hurt Cream. Cream then revealed to Gemerl that she had gotten infected in the scuffle and asked him to leave her in the city; Gemerl instead threw the Chaos Emerald back through the Warp Portal and flew off with Cream, stating that he would stay with her until she was well.[7][8][9]

Out of the Blue[]

Zeena30

Zeena leaves Sunset City, from Sonic the Hedgehog #30.

After Super Sonic and Super Silver had reversed the effects of the Metal Virus all around the world, the Zombots were no more and were cured. Zeena forcibly got up from her position, yelling for the nearby citizens of the city to back away. Seeing as she could no longer control them and Zavok's plan failed, the Zeti decided to leave but warned that she will not forget what happened and they would suffer for her indignity.[10]

Zeti Hunt![]

Suspecting that Sunset City would soon be attacked by the Deadly Six, the Chaotix arrived in Sunset City to await the group. However, when Restoration HQ was attacked by the Deadly Six instead, the Chaotix began hurrying to the Emeraldville Ruins to help.[11]

Trial by Fire[]

Espio and Vector later came to the K-TBR 199.2 radio station in Sunset City to pick up Charmy, whom they had left in Nite's care. While there, they got a tip for a case in Central City from Nite.[12]
