Sumi-e Supersonic Needle is a Japanese pattern style for the Sonic the Hedgehog series merchandise by Sega. The style is based on sumi-e ink wash painting intended for an expressive and dynamic look, similar to the 2D artwork for Sonic Adventure and the artwork for the 2019 wallpapers and calendars for Sonic Channel. The artwork was illustrated by Yui Karasuno.[1]

Merchandise of the style was first available at the Sonic Birthday 2019 event in Tokyo Joypolis to commemorate the twenty-eighth anniversary of the Sonic series. Merchandise included T-shirts, tote bags, and clear bottles.[2] Later in the year for Tokyo Game Show 2019, more merchandise was available with a new T-shirt and six different canvas artworks. The T-shirt was of Super Sonic in a golden foil print, and the canvas artworks were available in blind bags.[3]

  • T-shirt Sonic (2,800 yen)
  • T-shirt Shadow (2,800 yen)
  • Tote bag Sonic (1,500 yen)

  • T-shirt Super Sonic (3,200 yen)
  • Canvas art collection (800 yen each)

Other artwork in this style have been used in posts on the Japanese Sega and Sonic the Hedgehog social media accounts. With the release of Sonic Colors: Ultimate, a tapestry featuring a new illustration in this style was sold as part of the DX Pack.[4] In 2022, posters of artwork made previously were sold by Pyramid America and Moor-Art Gallery.[2]
