— Description, Sonic Free Riders

Metal City is the eighth and final track of Sonic Free Riders. As bonus track, it can be unlocked after completing the final race against Metal Sonic in Final Factory.

Description[]

A remake of the track from Sonic Riders, Metal City is a urban city setting. It takes place at a high level, with an ordinary city being seen underneath the platforms, in a light blue, clean sky with a few, albeit large clouds. The track pieces are enormous white-colored modernized buildings, while the paths are streets are made of light gray metal and glass. Along the paths are several cars and numerous billboards with advertisements. Some surfaces are also green grass with fenced walls around them.

Gameplay[]

Metal City is a fast-paced and open course. This track is very easy, and it is almost impossible to fall into a bottomless pit due to the paths being fenced. Like most other courses in Sonic Free Riders, the main objective in Metal City is to win a race by different methods.

Metal City features many common gimmicks, such as Grind Rails that can be utilized by players with the Grind Skill, Catapults that players with the Air Ride Skill can utilize to fly through the air and pass through dash rings located in mid-air, objects to smash through with the Power Skill, and Dash Panels. In terms of obstacles there are lawns that will lower the player's speed if they get into contact with them.

Overview[]

Standard[]

The standard track is nearly identical to the track from Sonic Riders. First, the players start out inside the tunnel from which they exit towards the first Kicker, which the players can jump from and reach one of two new paths, depending on their jump. In the case of a high jump, the players will land on the roof of a tunnel ahead and be able to use the Kicker there to collect a Ring×100 Item Box. In case of a lower jump however, the players must head into the tunnel on the ground. The route will then turn to the right for a long time, before a Grind Rail appears on the right side of the path, which the players can use to speed through the turn. The left side of the turn on the other hand is covered by a lawn that should be avoided in order to not to lose speed.

After making the turn, a Catapult will appear in the middle of the road, which will lead through Dash Rings in midair; thereby allowing the players to avoid the nearest hill and Kicker. After jumping off the aforementioned Kicker, the players must head through a tunnel, which splits into two paths on the inside. The left one of these paths is empty, while the right one is suitable for Power Skill users due to the cars appearing along it. After leaving the tunnel, there will be an intersection in front of the players, with large trucks crossing the path horizontally. Power Skill users in particular can safely pass through this intersection by destroying the vehicles. Alternatively, they can take a shortcut by destroying the parked vehicle on the right. However, other players should be careful at the intersection by trying to fit in-between the vehicles. Alternatively, the players can use the two Kickers on the left and right side of the path, as well as the two others behind the intersection, to cross it. The left Kicker in front of the intersection in particular is useful for Grind Skill users, as they can use it to reach a Grind Rail above them that allows them to skip this section. Air Ride Skill users on the other hand can jump off the Kicker on the right side and use the Dash Rings above to cross the intersection.

After the intersection, the route narrows down. Soon after, a lawn will appear on the left. After that, the path takes a sharp turn to the right. Here, the players can use the Kickers on the left side of the road to get through the turn. From there, the players can go straight ahead to the main Kicker and jump off of it into a metal tower. In case the players make a high jump, they will land on the top floor and can quickly use a second Kicker to jump into the tunnel where the finish line is located. Players that jump lower however will have to grab onto a rope pulley by lifting their arms up and waiting for it to shoot them into the air. The players will then land in front of the tunnel and be able to enter it and reach the finish line.

Expert[]

The expert track starts out in the same tunnel as the one on the standard track. However, as soon as the player exits the tunnel, they must turn left for a bit before entering another tunnel. There, Power Skill users can take a shortcut through the tunnel by destroying a barricade on the left side of the tunnel. This route has many cars parked alongside that can be destroyed. Grind Skill and Air Ride Skill users on the other hand can use the Grind Rails on the left side of the tunnel and the Catapult and Dash Rings in the middle of the tunnel respectively. These gimmicks will allow the players to shorten their way through another long tunnel designed like a transparent tube.

On the next section of the route, after the tunnel section, is a Kicker which the players can use to reach one of two paths on the track ahead, depending on their jump. The upper path goes under various tubes in different colors and ends at an additional Kicker which can be used to reach an Air×100 Item Box. The lower path on the other hand runs underneath the upper one. Regardless, both paths lead straight into a circular tunnel where the players can circle around it. There, the players must choose a route that best suits them. The route for the Grind Skill users includes a Grind Rail, the route for the Air Ride Skill users includes Catapults and Dash Rings, and the route for the Power Skill users includes cars to destroy. Regardless, each of these three routes lead around a tube. The paths for the Grind Skill and Air Ride Skill users also allow them to get to a roof, which they can use to jump off of. The route from there will then turn sharply to the left. It will then take them through a route with a series of winding turns that leads into two sharp right turns with Kickers on the outside to help the player get through them.
