Sonic the Hedgehog Puzzle Book 1 is an activity book published by Ladybird in the United Kingdom. It contains puzzles and activities based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series, The reader can reward themselves with Rings for solving puzzles.

Synopsis[]

Page one[]

Introduction[]

Serving as an introduction to the readers, Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails explain that Dr. Robotnik is trying to built a Death Egg to control the planet with. To stop Sonic and Tails, he has put a number of puzzles in their way, and now the heroes need the reader to solve the puzzles. Sonic further explains that for each puzzle the reader solves, they win Gold Rings, which can be used to keep scores, and advices them to use the press-out Rings from the middle of this book.

Puzzle one[]

In this puzzle, Sonic's Animal friends have been trapped inside Badniks. The reader's job is to identify each of Sonic's friends by rearranging the letters of the anagrams displayed into the proper names for Sonic's friends. The jumbled-up names are as follows:

For each name rearranged correctly, the reader can reward themselves with one Ring.

Puzzle two[]

In this puzzle, Sonic is in need of more energy. Next to him is a number of Rings, each with a different number from one to fifty inside them, listed in a row. However, two of the Rings listed in the puzzle are out of numerical order. The reader's job is to find out which ones. If the reader can solve this puzzle, they can reward themselves with four Rings.

Puzzle one[]

In this puzzle, Coconut Badniks are throwing coconuts at Sonic. However, the thrown coconuts spell out a message that is written in a foreign cipher. It is the reader's job to decipher this message using the translation of the different cipher signs written around on the page. If the reader can translate the message, they can reward themselves with four Rings.

Puzzle two[]

In this puzzle, Tails has found Dr. Robotnik's forgotten lists of Badniks and he needs help to work them out. Here, Tails present the reader with a yellow and pink list, each one holding half of a Badnik's name on it. It is the reader's job to connect the different name fragments together to form actual Badnik names. The name fragments are as follows:

For each name put properly together, the reader can reward themselves with one Ring.

Page three[]

In this puzzle, Sonic and Tails have to get through a labyrinth of pipes to reach the control room and then make it to the exit in order to stop Dr. Robotnik from spreading his pollution. It is the reader's job to guide the characters through this labyrinth. However, along the way, the reader will arrive at junctions where they have to take one of three branching paths based on their answer to a question in that junction. Furthermore, once the player takes a path, it becomes contaminated, meaning it cannot be used again.

If the reader can complete the maze without getting trapped, they can reward themselves with two Rings. Furthermore, the reader can earn bonus Rings that they find along the path through the pipe labyrinth.

Page four[]

In this puzzle, Sonic and Tails need to get through the Aquatic Relix Zone. It is the player's job to answer as many of the questions on the walls and columns there are as possible. The questions are as follows:'

  • In what year wasSonic 2 released in the U.K.
  • What kind of creature is Tails?
  • What is Tails' real name?
  • In which Zone do the Shellcrackers live?
  • Which item gives Sonic even more speed?
  • How many Rings do you need for an extra life?

For each correct answer, the reader can earn themselves a Ring. Furthermore, they can earn a bonus Ring of each of the following "bubbled" mathematical questions they answer correctly:

  • C - X
  • III × VI
  • L + L
  • XXIX - IX
  • IV × XIII
  • XXXX - XXIV
  • IV × XII
  • XX × V

Page five[]

In this puzzle, Sonic has to defeat Dr. Robotnik's pinball machine. To do this, the reader has to lead Sonic through a chain of spheres. In each of these spheres is a question and different paths leading to different spheres that contain an answer to the question. The reader's job is to whizz down the route with the correct answers until they reach goal marked as "JACKPOT". Along the way, the reader will as well reach special bonus puzzles. For reach question answered correctly, the reader can earn themselves a Ring. For each answer gotten wrong however, the reader will lose a Ring.

Once the player has completed the puzzle, Tails will encourage the reader to try solving the fiendishly fiddlesome puzzles on the centre pages.

Page six[]

Puzzle one[]

In this puzzle, Tails asks the reader to find the differences between the image of a landscape and the postcard of it on the bottom of the page. If the reader can find more than seven differences, they can give themselves six Rings. If they can only find less than seven though, they can only give themselves three Rings.

Puzzle two[]

In this puzzle, Sonic needs to be sparked up with more energy in order to get through said puzzle. It is the reader's job to find five extra monitors with energy rings. For each monitor the reader spots, they can give themselves a bonus Ring.

Page seven[]

In this puzzle, Sonic and Tails find themselves lost in the Mystic Cave Zone, and they have to climb vines to get out. The reader's job is to follow eight numbered vines in numerical order. The first vine leads to the first letter of five special words or phrases; the second vines leads to the second letter and so on. Using this method, the reader has to fill out the grid on the page, which will allow them to work out the five words or phrases and discover the secret password, whose lineup of letters are marked on the grid.

For each word worked out, the reader can reward themselves with one Ring, and if they find out the secret password, they can give themselves two bonus Rings.

Page eight[]

Puzzle one[]

In this puzzle, Dr. Robotnik polluting the the sea with his oil well, leaving Sonic's Animal friends covered in gunk. Using a portrait of Porker Lewis, Sally Acorn, Chirps, Johnny Lightfoot and TUx provided by Sonic, it is the reader's job to identify the different Animals among the gunk on the page.

For each portrait the reader matches up correctly, the reader can give themselves a Ring. In addition, they can give themselves two bonus Rings if they can identify the Animal who has not been gunked.

Puzzle two[]

In this puzzle, Tails is in need of mega energy from a pile Rings, each marked with a letter. It is the reader's job to list the order in which the Rings are to be picked up, starting from the top of the pile and working down to the bottom. If the reader can solve this puzzle, they can give themselves three Rings.

Page nine[]

Puzzle one[]

In this puzzle, Tails finds himself in Dr. Robotnik's hideout. Here, the doctor has made a bolt for his hideout. Here, the reader's job is to find out which ones of the screws on the page fits into which hole on the wall.

For each screw the reader finds its match for, they can give themselves one Ring.

Puzzle two[]

In this puzzle, Sonic is ready to set off in hot pursuit. The reader's job is to move through a series of blocks on the page that has letters in them - horizontally, vertically or diagonally - from the starting point to the finishing point so that the letters that the reader comes across along the way spell out the name of Sonic's arch-enemy. If the reader can find the name, they can give themselves two Rings.

Page ten[]

Puzzle one[]

In this puzzle, Dr. Robotnik has fled to his flying battleship, and Sonic has to find it. On this page, there is several numbered airplanes. The reader's job is the pair up the identical airplanes with each other. The one left over will be Robotnik's battleship. If the reader can find the right machine, they can give themselves two Rings.

Puzzle two[]

In this puzzle, Dr. Robotnik gives the reader five brain teasers to solve:

  1. Who had the first flight across the English Channel - Bleriot, Wright or Edinburgh?
  2. Which is the fastest passenger plane - Boeing 747, Jumbo Jet or Concorde?
  3. Who flew too close to the sun and melted his wings - Icarus, Isambard or Elijak?
  4. Which bird has the largest wing span - Heron, Albatross or Golden Eagle?
  5. Which is the only bird that can fly backwards - Wren, Parakeet or Hummingbird?

' For each one the reader gets right, they gave give themselves a Ring.

Page eleven[]

In this puzzle, Sonic needs helping putting Dr. Robotnik's battleship out of action. With Sonic presenting a list showing the Spiny, Nebula, Flasher, Grounder, Masher and Balkiry, the reader's job is to find their associated anagram around the page and identify the letter that is missing from said anagrams. These anagrams are as follows:

  • Birkay
  • Rahme
  • Nreurgo
  • Balun
  • Ynps
  • Rfseal

By finding the missing letter in each anagram, the reader can spell out something that "every super hedgehog needs". For each anagram solved, the reader can give themselves one Ring. Furthermore, finding the name of the special item allows the reader to give themselves a bonus Ring.

Puzzle[]

In this puzzle, Sonic has found Dr. Robotnik. To defeat him, the reader has to answer the following riddles:

  1. Which is faster, 50 m.p.h or 70 k.p.h?
  2. Which is further, 1100 yds. or 80 m?
  3. Which weights more, 10 lbs. or 5 kilograms?
  4. Which is hotter, 50 celsius or 100 fahrenheit?
  5. Which is the larger amount, 10 pints or 20 litres?

For each answer the reader gets right, they can give themselves two Rings.
