Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog[]

Sonic the Hedgehog AoStH profile

Sonic the Hedgehog, from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series.

In the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series, Sonic is a world-roaming Freedom Fighter with a lifestyle similar to a tramp, who fiercely defends the citizens of Mobius from the evil schemes of Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his lackeys Scratch and Grounder in several comical adventures.

One day, Sonic came across a young orphan named Miles Prower and was persuaded to adopt him as his younger brother, as the young fox had no one to live with. Naming his new brother "Tails", the two of them became as close as a real family. While the hedgehog has his trademark attitude, he also tries his best to stand out as a responsible role model for the innocent Tails.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog television series, Sonic lived in Mobotropolis with Princess Sally and the future Knothole Freedom Fighters during their childhood until Dr. Robotnik invaded the kingdom, enslaved the people with the roboticization technology and took control of Mobius. The hedgehog and his friends, however, managed to escape the tyrant by fleeing to Knothole Village in the Great Forest. There, the heroes formed the Freedom Fighters and began a ten year long battle with the doctor to take back their planet, with the hedgehog being one of the main leaders and their primary agent.

Sonic Underground[]

Sonic 181

Sonic the Hedgehog, from the Sonic Underground television series.

In the Sonic Underground television series, Sonic was born as the heir to the throne of Mobius, along with his siblings, Manic and Sonia. Shortly after their birth however, their mother Queen Aleena was dethroned by Dr. Robotnik and they became wanted fugitives, but the Oracle of Delphius prophesied that Aleena and her children would one day defeat the doctor together, but only if she left her children in the care of others until then.

Sonic himself was left in the care of a regular family. During his early childhood, however, his adopted family was captured and roboticized. He then joined his Uncle Chuck and the Freedom Fighters in the battle against Robotnik over the next many years. One day however, Sonic was approached by the Oracle who revealed to him his origin and family. Sonic soon after reunited with his siblings and together they formed the band Sonic Underground where they fought Robotnik while searching for their mother.

In this media, Sonic possessed a medallion that transformed into an electric guitar/laser rifle.

Sonic X[]

Sonic 135

Sonic the Hedgehog, from the Sonic X anime series.

In the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics, Sonic originally lived on a parallel version of Earth in another Zone. During one of his battles with Dr. Eggman, a massive Chaos Control blast occurred and the hedgehog, his friends and the hedgehog were transported to Earth. Shortly after arriving, Sonic nearly drowned in a pool, but was saved by a 12-year-old boy named Christopher Thorndyke, who he became friends with and lived with. In time, Chris came to have a strong bond with Sonic as he lived a lonely life since his parents were always busy.

Sonic eventually settled down on this new world with his friends and became a famous hero to the human population as he and his friends protected the planet from Dr. Eggman and his continuous attempts to conquer Earth. Eventually, the hedgehog and everyone from his world were forced to return home as their presence threatened to freeze time. Before Sonic could return home, however, Chris, who did not want him to leave, ran off with him. Nevertheless, the hedgehog eventually made his friend come to terms with his feelings and returned home.

Six months after coming back home, Sonic teamed up with his friends and Chris, who had just arrived in his dimension, to fight the Metarex, an alien race of cyborgs that was a threat to the safety of the entire galaxy. With everyone's aid, the hedgehog managed to defeat the Metarex and their leader Dark Oak and saved the galaxy. Upon returning to his home planet, he had his goodbye with Chris, who went home, and Sonic himself went back to his normal battles with Dr. Eggman.

Sonic Boom[]

Sonic Boom Sonic 2

Sonic the Hedgehog, from Sonic Boom.

In the Sonic Boom franchise, Sonic is the leader of Team Sonic, a group of heroes who protect Seaside Island and the earth at large from Dr. Eggman and his legion of robots. Though initially kind of a loner, the many trials Sonic faced during his battles against Lyric taught him the importance of teamwork, and he has since grown into a capable and admirable teammate and leader.

Sonic the Hedgehog (manga)[]

Sonic (Manga)

Sonic the Hedgehog, from Sonic the Hedgehog (Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special) Chapter 1.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog serialized manga published by Shogakukan, Sonic is the future self of a young, timid hedgehog boy named Nicky from six years into the future. In times of crisis, unlike the common belief, Sonic takes over his past self's role thanks to a speed-of-light Rolling Attack that allows him to temporarily time travel to the present and Nicky to the future. However, nobody, not even Nicky himself, is aware of this phenomenon. When traveling to the present, the hedgehog fights several threats such as Anton Veruca and Dr. Eggman, defending his younger self and his family from these foes. Along his adventures, he has made several allies such as Tails and Charmy Bee.

Archie Comics[]

Sonic the Hedgehog Archie profile

Sonic the Hedgehog, from Sonic the Hedgehog #241.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Sonic was a member of the Knothole Freedom Fighters and the beloved, world-renowned hero of Mobius. He was born during the Great War to Jules and Bernadette Hedgehog, and was originally named after his grandfathers (he later legally changed his named to "Sonic" with no offense to his forebears). While very young, the hedgehog lost his parents to the first clandestine roboticization experiments. He was taken in by his uncle, Sir Charles Hedgehog, where he briefly played delivery boy for his uncle's chili-dog stand while spending time in Knothole. Aside from his abnormal speed, Sonic was an average child. Tragedy struck when Charles was captured by Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his forces following the doctor's takeover of the Kingdom of Acorn and roboticized. Sonic and a few others were herded to Knothole by the Original Freedom Fighters, who gave the hedgehog the inspiration that would make him a hero. From there, he threw his full support behind the Knothole Freedom Fighters and fought to liberate the kingdom. Initially, he playfully took on the villain's first few generations of Badniks, growing in skill until, by his mid-teens, he was a true threat to Robotnik's forces and became a beacon of hope for the world.

As Sonic developed his incredible speed, his attitude became legendary. Irreverent, confident, impatient and energetic, he fought constantly and eventually succeeded in overthrowing Dr. Robotnik, and continued the fight against his successor, Dr. Eggman, thwarting his plans, too. During his adventures, he has traveled the globe, and even traversed outer space, alternate dimensions, and time itself. He was named the chosen hero of the multiverse, having throughout his endeavors faced down mad scientists, evil wizards, warmongering aliens and even gods. Following Operation: Clean Sweep, the hedgehog met several loses that lead to the disbandment of the Knothole Freedom Fighters, making him assume leadership of Team Fighters to continue the fight. When the second Genesis Wave was unleashed, Sonic met Mega Man and they joined forces to bring their multiverses back to normal, though the timeline of his multiverse was forever altered in the process.

After the Super Genesis Wave rewrote history, Sonic became virtually indistinguishable from his game counterpart.

Sonic the Comic[]

STC71-Sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog, from Sonic the Comic #71. Art by Richard Elson.

In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, Sonic was once an ordinary (though still fast) brown hedgehog on the planet Mobius. He encountered a kindly scientist named Dr. Ovi Kintobor, who performed experiments on his speed. An explosion resulted in his spines fusing together and turning blue. A later experiment, involving the doctor's attempts to rid Mobius of evil, transformed him into Ivo Robotnik. After several unsuccessful attempts to take over the world, Robotnik finally managed to conquer the planet by sending the hedgehog six months into the future. On his return, Sonic took it upon himself to form a group of Freedom Fighters to depose the villain, which they finally managed to do after countless battles and encounters with other foes and new allies.

In his adventures, Sonic by his loyal sidekick Tails, as well as Amy Rose, Porker Lewis, Tekno the Canary, and others. He has a friendly, though still quite intense, rivalry with Knuckles the Echidna, who frequently accuses the hedgehog of bringing trouble onto his Floating Island.

Sonic can turn into Super Sonic in this continuity without exposure to the Chaos Emeralds (this is due to a dose of radiation he received when the Emeralds were first brought together), but in this form he is out-of-control, bordering on psychotic and he attacks friends and enemies alike. The two were separated for an extended run, but re-united in the series' final story arc.

Sonic the Hedgehog, from Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.

In Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, Sonic lives on Planet Freedom and is one of the defenders of the Land of the Sky, alongside Tails, who protects it from the evil Dr. Robotnik and his forces. He lives with Tails on their own private island.

One day, Sonic and Tails were called by Dr. Robotnik to battle an evil robot named Metal Robotnik and save their planet from destruction. This was however a trick on Robotnik's behalf so the evil doctor could copy Sonic's data into his Hyper Metal Sonic robot. After the doctor succeeded with his plan, Sonic worked together with his friends and allies to stop his metallic copy from destroying the world.

Paramount[]

Sonic the Hedgehog, from Sonic the Hedgehog (film).

In the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs, Sonic is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog from Mobius who was born with immense powers that are desired by many people. He lived with his parental figure, Longclaw, until he was forced to leave his home planet to go to planet Earth. He lived hidden from the society for ten years, until he was forced to leave his home again, since he was wanted by Dr. Robotnik. Trying to escape, Sonic hid in Tom Wachowski's garage, but is discovered and shot by a soothing dart from the police officer, causing him to lose his Rings, his only way to escape. Both had to recover the Rings and escape from the evil Robotnik, who wished to obtain Sonic's powers to conquer the world, but Sonic heroically defeats Robotnik and banishes him into the Mushroom Planet and resettled in Green Hills with the Wachowski family. Later, Sonic found himself in a race to recover the Master Emerald with his newfound partner Tails before it fell into the hands of Robotnik and Knuckles the Echidna. Later teaming up with Knuckles as well, Sonic managed to defeat Robotnik and began to swore to protect the Master Emerald with Tails and Knuckles while they resided with him and the Wachowskis.

Reception and legacy[]

As Sega's mascot and one of the key reasons for the company's success during the 16-bit era of consoles, Sonic is one of the most recognizable video game characters in the world. In 1996, Sonic was the first video game character to be seen in a Rose Parade. Sonic is also the first video game character to have a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Sonic was one of the three game characters inducted on the inaugural Walk of Game class in 2005, along with his Nintendo rivals Mario and Link.[22] One of a class of genes involved in fruit fly embryonic development, called hedgehog genes, has been named "Sonic hedgehog" after the character.[23]

Sonic has been acknowledged as, undoubtedly, the most recognizable and famous character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series according to an official popularity poll.[24] As Sega's mascot, Sonic has also been used as a symbol for the company's various sponsorships. Between 1993 and 1997, Sega sponsored the JEF United Ichihara Chiba football team, during which period Sonic appeared in the team's uniform. During the 1993 Formula One championship, Sega sponsored the Williams Grand Prix team, which won the Constructors' Championship that year, as well as the team's lead driver, Alain Prost, winning the Drivers' Championship. Sonic was featured in the cars, helmets, and rival McLaren used to paint pictures of a squashed hedgehog after winning races over Williams.[25] The 1993 European Grand Prix featured a Sonic balloon and Sonic billboards, and the race's trophy was in the shape of a hedgehog. Sonic also appears on some versions of the willow video store logo.[26]

In 2008, Sonic was voted the most popular video game character in the UK with a 24% vote.[27] His old rival, Mario, came second with 21% of the vote.[27]

Theme songs[]

Solo themes[]

Shared themes[]

  • In Sonic Adventure 2, he shares the theme "Live and Learn" with Shadow.
  • In Sonic Heroes, Team Sonic's (Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) theme is "We Can", which refers to Sonic in the lines "Look out down below, Sonic is on the go" and "Sonic's in the lead, giving us greater speed!"
  • In Sonic Rush, Sonic and Blaze's shared theme, "Raisin' Me Up", is about how Sonic helped Blaze in her time of need and taught her value of friendship which is played after they defeated the final boss.
  • In Sonic Riders, Sonic's team theme, shared with Tails and Knuckles, is an instrumental called "High Flying Groove".
  • In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Team Sonic's theme song is "Un-Gravitify".
  • In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and Chip's shared theme "Dear My Friend" is played during the credits of the game.
  • In Sonic Free Riders, the theme "Free" could have some connection with both Sonic and his Extreme Gear rival, Jet.
  • In Sonic Forces, Sonic and the Avatar share the theme "Fist Bump", which tells of the friendship between the two and how they will work together to save the world.

Trivia[]

  • Sonic has hay fever.[30]
  • Sonic's favorite sport and thing to do in his free time is running.[31][32]
  • Sonic Rivals 2 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3

A surprised Sonic, from Sonic Rivals 2. Notice the raised quills.

In Sonic Adventure and Sonic Rivals 2, Sonic's quills will raise if he shows surprise, much like an actual hedgehog.
  • Sonic accordingly knows about the existence of Carbuncle from Puyo Puyo and Kirby.[33]
  • Out of all of Dr. Eggman's creations that Sonic has destroyed, the only one that has left an impression on him so far is the Egg Dragoon, due to how "overboard" the doctor went with it. However, the one reason why the hedgehog remembers it is because he sent Eggman in his cockpit flying into the horizon as the Werehog after defeating the mech, which he feels he might have "overdone" in retrospect.[33]
  • If Sonic himself were to make a Sonic game, he would make it about what he does every day: running through courses that look impossible in real life at super high speeds. However, he would do all of the development in a single week at most, mainly because he cannot stand doing the same thing for a long time.[33]
  • While chili dogs are his favorite by far, Sonic also enjoys curry dogs.[33]
  • Out of all of the character proverbs in Japanese, Sonic goes with Onsoku Harinezumi (音速ハリネズミ? lit. "Supersonic Hedgehog"). He also likes Sokusen Sokketsu (速戦即決? lit. "Quick Decision").[33]
  • Sonic never thinks about the distance between two locations, since to him, everything is just a quick runway; in other words, from his view, everything is at "jogging distance".[33]
  • According to Naoto Ohshima, Sonic can speak all languages, because he communicates with his heart.[34]
  • Takashi Iizuka says that, while he has never seen it, he knows that Sonic likes bikes.[31]
  • There are conflicting accounts on when Sonic first met Eggman; the Japanese manual of the original Sonic the Hedgehog leaves it clear that the two had been enemies long before the events of the game.[35] In 2022, Ian Flynn, who wrote the cutscenes of the game's remaster in Sonic Origins, said that the two first met in Sonic 1.[36] Sonic Channel, Sonic Team's official website, is split on the matter: the December 2021 cover story about Sonic and Eggman reflects what is established in Sonic 1's manual,[37] while Eggman's character page in the website says that "[h]is long relationship with Sonic began here [in Sonic 1]".[38]
  • Naoto Ohshima once stated that Sonic is a romanticist, and not a daydreamer.[39]
  • According to Yuji Naka, Sonic will never get married, as he cannot picture him in a marriage and with children.[40]
    • In 2023, director Morio Kishimoto said that Sonic is single, but also hinted the possibility of him having a love life in the future.[41]
  • According to Naoto Ohshima, Sonic will never show tears of true grief to anyone. He also stated that the character does not have parents.[42]
  • According to an interview with Yuji Naka, Sonic is likely to have a hamburger Happy Meal from McDonald's after an adventure.[43]
  • According to Takashi Iizuka, Sonic does indeed have two separate eyeballs.[44]
  • Sonic likes running on water, since he feels incredibly good when doing so and likes the thrill of risking falling underwater at the smallest mistake.[33]
  • Sonic does not have a house; rather, he is constantly on the move and enjoying wherever life takes him.[44] However, he is depicted with a house in Sonic Shuffle, as well as in the North American manual of Sonic Labyrinth.[45] In Sonic Battle, it is stated that he and his friends live in Emerald Town.[46]
  • Sonic is known to support all human rights, in all walks of life.[50]
  • According to one of his taunts in Team Sonic Racing, Sonic does indeed have blue fur hidden under his gloves.[51]
  • Sonic appears to be able to juggle, as it was shown in Sonic Unleashed when he was juggling the drained Chaos Emeralds with one hand.
  • Takashi Iizuka thinks that Sonic does not watch a lot of Dragon Ball Z.[52]
  • In SegaSonic Cosmo Fighter, Sonic not only has at least one spacecraft of his own, but also appears to be the owner of a spaceship company called "Sonic Space".
  • According to Yuji Naka, Sonic never met humans until around Sonic Adventure,[53] Dr. Eggman notwithstanding.
  • Because of the angle in early Japanese artwork, as well as the sprites in the Sega Mega Drive games, it looked like Sonic had three flat quills on his head,[14] so North American artists drew him like that in the early 1990s.
  • Accordingly, due to the "pixelated" look of the Sega Mega Drive games, the cuffs on Sonic's gloves could be misinterpreted as wristwatches. This is something that is actually referenced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and much later in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, where the character looks at an imaginary watch while waiting for the player to control him.[14]
  • Sonic will never have a backstory, since in Yuji Naka's opinion, uncovering all of a character's mysteries makes them look less interesting.[53]
  • Beta opening shot

An earlier version of Sonic Unleashed's opening displaying Sonic's humanoid skeleton while he is being electrocuted. Shots like this one ended up being scrapped.

Sonic's skeleton was never shown in final products, but it did appear explicitly in a scrapped sprite for Sonic the Hedgehog CD and an earlier version of the intro of Sonic Unleashed, both while being electrocuted. Neither of these made it into the final games.
    • A possible explanation for this comes in Sonic Advance 2: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, where it is claimed that Sega once vetoed a boss idea that consisted of a flaming hedgehog's skull since "you don't show Sonic's skeleton",[54] although no evidence of this scrapped boss has been found.
  • In 1993, Sonic was the first video game character to appear as a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Sonic reappeared in 2011 as the lead of the parade, with his balloon receiving a modern redesign, commemorating his 20th anniversary. He continued to be in the parade for the following two years. In 2021, his balloon returned to commemorate his 30th anniversary.
  • When Sonic closes his eyes in games up until Sonic Advance 2, his eyelids are colored peach, the same color as his arms and muzzle. After that, his eyelids were changed to his blue fur color. However, in one commercial, his eyelids were not blue, and in a Japanese commercial for a game, he had no eyelids at all (he blinks twice in the commercial, but his eyes are still open). Artwork for Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld and Sonic Adventure, along with Japanese artwork for Sonic 3D Blast, also depict him with no eyelids. This is alluded to in Sonic Generations, as Modern Sonic has blue eyelids while Classic Sonic has peach eyelids.
  • According to an interview on Sonic Central, Sonic does not know the whereabouts of Mighty the Armadillo, Ray the Flying Squirrel, Fang the Hunter, Bark the Polar Bear or Bean the Dynamite.
  • In Sonic Rush, if Sonic is tapped with the stylus during gameplay, he will clap, jump back and forth and continuously swing his arm clockwise as if he is exercising.
  • Originally, Sonic was intended to have visible fangs in his Japanese artwork, though they were removed when he was given a more Americanized design for his US artwork in order to "soften him up" slightly.[citation needed] Even though he still possesses fangs, they are only visible when he opens his mouth - this is mainly noticeable in Dreamcast titles such as Sonic Adventure and Sonic Shuffle, but became less obvious after Sonic Adventure 2. Previously, his fangs were supposed to be visible even when his mouth was closed.
  • Sonic's age has always been difficult to pinpoint. A Japanese promotional video for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 said that he was either 15 or 16.[14] The Japanese version of Sonic Jam stated that his age was between 15 and 18, while his English profile for that same game claimed he was 16. Several pieces of SegaSonic the Hedgehog Japanese merchandise used the slogan "born in 1947 but made for the 90's", suggesting Sonic would be 44 if the first game was set in its year of release.[55] Sonic's character profile on the official Sonic Team Japanese website Sonic Channel finalized his age as 15, something that was reflected in his profiles in material such as Sonic Free Riders and Sonic the Hedgehog Sticker Collection. In Sonic Generations, Sonic's birthday was held, suggesting he has aged a year, but nothing official has been said. In 2022, the age section in the profile for Sonic and every other character on Sonic Channel was removed, suggesting the characters may no longer have specific ages, however in the same year Takashi Iizuka stated in an interview that Sonic is a teenager.[31]
  • In the Japanese versions of the games and media, Sonic knows more English than any of the other characters, as he is the only one who speaks Engrish very frequently. This may be due to the fact that the English language is considered "cool" in Japan, as well as the fact that Jun'ichi Kanemaru, his Japanese voice actor, is an English teacher.
  • In the 2011 Guinness World Records Gamers Edition, Sonic placed 10th in the "Top 50 Video Game Characters Of All Time". His rival, Mario, placed first, and Shadow had placed 25th.
    • Sonic has also been nominated by the Guinness World Records Gamers Edition and won as the fastest video-gaming character of all time as well.
  • Every time Sonic appears in a band he is the guitarist.
  • Sonic has been chased by something numerous times in 3D games: an orca and a boulder in Sonic Adventure, a G.U.N. truck in Sonic Adventure 2, three large Kao and a giant alligator in Sonic Heroes, a fire tornado and another orca in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), a group of triceratops in Sonic and the Secret Rings, Eggman's robot, the Interceptor in Sonic Unleashed, a Hyper-go-on void in the Wii version of Sonic Colors, the Nega-Wisp Armor, a giant ferris wheel and several dinosaur skeletons in the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, and a helicopter and a truck in Sonic Generations. The void was the only thing that Sonic was not able to outrun.
  • Apparently, Sonic is able to breathe in space, as seen in several games, although he cannot breathe underwater without the support of bubbles.
  • All of the cars that Sonic has driven have been sports convertibles, similar to how Amy has only ever driven old-fashioned cars.
  • In 1996, Sonic was the first video game character to be seen in a Rose Parade.
  • The former NBA team "The Seattle SuperSonics" is often nicknamed "The Hedgehogs" as a reference to this character.
  • Sonic and Knuckles are the only characters who have retained their Japanese voice actor voicing them in all of the Sonic games since Sonic Adventure.
  • In Jet Set Radio, one of the characters, Garam, wears a necklace with a skull on it. An interview with Ryuta Ueda, the art director of the game, hinted that it is a skull of "another famous Sega character", implying that it belongs to Sonic.[56]
  • Hatsune Miku, a Vocaloid and star of another popular Sega video game series, has an unlockable Sonic costume in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Extend that she can wear use in gameplay to celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary.
    • The costume was even designed by Yuji Uekawa, the artist of Sonic's current design.[57]
    • She also sang a cover of "Live and Learn" on a special pre-order album of the game to celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary.
    • A different Sonic-themed costume, titled "Sonic Style" was made available in Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage to celebrate both the game's launch and Sonic's 30th anniversary.
  • At one point in Sonic Unleashed, Eggman calls Sonic a "hedge-pig". This may be a reference to the fact that "pig" can be synonymous with "hog" and "hedgepig" means "hedgehog" in Shakespearean language.
  • Sonic is the inspiration for the character Gear from the anime Aoi Sekai no Chuushin de, which is a re-imagining of the console wars between Sega and Nintendo, with many other parodies of popular Sega and Nintendo characters appearing alongside Gear.
  • In Sonic Unleashed, the checkpoints, which give players points based on their speed (SPD) in-game, can give the player over 2,886 SPD points; in comparison, using the Light Speed Dash whilst traveling through a checkpoint awards the player with 396 SPD points. If this can be considered an accurate measurement of speed, it means that Sonic can move at speeds far greater than the speed of light.
  • In another Sega game, Skies of Arcadia Legends, there is a character named Piastol who bears a striking similarity to Sonic.
  • When one looks up "Sonic the Hedgehog" on Google, a sprite of the character from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 can be seen at the corner of the results page. When the user clicks on him, he will jump. After one jump, the hedgehog will perform his idle animation of tapping his foot impatiently. If the user waits for ten seconds, he will lie down and wait impatiently. If clicked on twenty five times, Sonic will turn into Super Sonic.
  • A Japanese team developing the Radio & Plasma Wave Investigation (RPWI) instrumentation for the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer spacecraft, launched by ESA and Airbus in 2022, was able to gain Sega's approval to use Sonic as the mascot for the device.[58]
  • In 2020, during Sega's 60th Anniversary event, Sonic won 1st place as the most popular Sega character in Japan.
  • To celebrate Sonic's 30th birthday, he officially became a VTuber voiced by his official Japanese voice actor, Jun'ichi Kanemaru.[59]
  • According to an interview done with Sonic Team, miscredited as Team Sonic, by Disney Adventures magazine in 2005, Sonic is "clearly interested" in Amy but has always been "too shy to declare his feelings."[60] This is further supported by Evan Stanley stating that Sega's official stance on the subject is that "They like each other, but Sonic just isn't the kind of guy who is going to make goo-goo eyes at Amy or perform grand acts of romance."[61]
  • Prior to Sonic Generations, Super Smash Bros. Brawl used the term "Classic Sonic" to distinguish Sonic's appearance in the original titles from his more modern appearances. This is noteworthy, as Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out three years before Generations.
  • In early versions of Sonic Forces' script, Tails referred to Classic Sonic as "Alt Sonic" to avoid confusion.[62]
    • However, Takashi Iizuka did not like the term as stated in his notes throughout said script.
  • Classic Sonic is consistently referred to as "Sonic" in the games, making no distinction between him and Modern Sonic. However, the name "Classic Sonic" does exist in-universe, having been coined by Amy.[63]
  • According to the official description of Sonic Prime on Netflix in certain regions, Sonic's middle name is supposedly "Maurice". This is a reference to the version of Sonic from the Archie Comics Sonic comics, who also had "Maurice" as his middle name.[64] Ian Flynn stated that this reference was just a gag made for the mobile version of Netflix, and is not actually true.[65]
  • Classic Sonic's 3D artwork pose from Sonic Generations is similar to his one seen on American box art of Sonic 1. He even has swifting ears, a glabella line in between his frowning conjoined eyes and visible brow ridges present on his American design, suggesting a partial basis for the former.
