The Ifrit is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an interdimensional,[1] bird-like beast of incredible power from another dimension, the Chaotic Inferno, which was documented by Gerald Robotnik. When learning of the creature's existence, Eggman Nega attempted to release him upon Sonic's universe, but his attempt was thwarted by Sonic and his friends.

Appearance[]

The Ifrit is a massive creature, several times larger than individuals like Sonic, who looks like a bird, with a fiery skin colored brown. He also possesses a lava body on the neck, the tail, and the wings; as well as a yellowish rock armor covering his beak, tips, and the area between his eyes, which are small and entirely red.

While little is known about the Ifrit's past life, he was presumably the cause of the destruction of his home dimension, which became known as the Chaotic Inferno.[2]

Over fifty years ago, Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of the infamous Dr. Eggman, conducted a research on the Ifrit and his home dimension, which he documented on various files.[1]

Sonic Rivals 2[]

In Sonic Rivals 2, Eggman Nega discovered Gerald Robotnik's journal that explained of the Ifrit's power. Intending to free him from the Chaotic Inferno and feed him Chao to make him invincible and destroy the world,[3] the villain hired Rouge to get him the seven Chaos Emeralds to open the portal to the creature's dimension, which was found at the Mystic Haunt mansion.[1][4] Despite interference from Sonic, his friends, Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic, Nega was successful in his quest and managed to open up the portal with only six Emeralds, and entrusted his Metal Sonic 3.0 robot to awaken the Ifrit and bring him to Sonic's universe.[5] In truth, Nega only used his Metal Sonic 3.0 to keep his enemies distracted while the doctor successfully awakened the Ifrit by himself.[6]

In time, the Ifrit was confronted by the several groups of heroes and villains who were attempting to stop him: Sonic and Tails, Shadow and Metal Sonic, Knuckles and Rouge, and Silver and Espio. Despite using his mind control to enslave Tails/Sonic and Rouge/Knuckles and use them to aid him in battle, the beast was defeated in all of these encounters. In addition, thanks to Shadow and Metal Sonic's efforts, the portal leading to Sonic's universe was sealed, leaving the Ifrit and Eggman Nega trapped in the Chaotic Inferno.

Said to possess the power of destruction,[7] the Ifrit is a very powerful creature, capable of destroying entire dimensions.[8] Fitting his appearance, the beast boasts several fire-based attacks, which include fire breaths and the ability to spew giant fireballs. He can also achieve flight thanks to his wings, and possesses super strength, being able to launch rock platforms several thousand meters into the air. Additionally, his power is said to increase by feeding him Chao, allowing him to reach such levels that he becomes practically invincible.[9]

The Ifrit holds the power of binding one's soul;[7] with mind-control powers, he can enslave other persons and have them treat him as their "master". While this ability is powerful enough to subjugate individuals such as Sonic himself[10] (who has been able to resist the mind-control of other creatures such as Dark Gaia), it has also been noted to not be very strong in the end, as victims are not totally under the Ifrit's control and can occasionally regain control of themselves.[11]

The Ifrit is the sixth and final boss of Sonic Rivals 2. He is fought at Chaotic Inferno Zone Act 4 and can be fought by all of the game's eight playable characters.

Boss guide[]

Like the prequel's final boss, only the player's character can damage the Ifrit and he requires eight hits to be defeated. There is no timer on the fight but rather, the top-right corner of the screen displays a height counter (signifying where the fight is located at) which decreases over the course of the battle. If the Ifrit is not defeated before the height reaches zero, the player will fail the stage, effectively requiring the player to defeat the Ifrit within a varied time limit.

The fight first consists of a free-falling phase but the player and their rival will still be able to move left, right and perform the Homing Attack. Trails of Rings appear in a vertical orientation. The Ifrit will fly out into the background and attacks by spitting out fireballs that will affect either the left or right side of the battle. After a few waves, the Ifrit will roar and then quickly swoop into the characters; however if the player succeeds a QTE button prompt before the Ifrit's attack connects, the player's character will automatically attack the incoming Ifrit, scoring a hit while transitioning to the next phase of the fight. The required button(s) can be either Cross/Circle. If the player does not prompt, causing the Ifrit's attack to connect, the Ifrit will either swoop again or start over his attack pattern with his fireball attack.

After hitting the Ifrit during the first phase, the fight transitions to the second phase where both characters land on the Ifrit's body and can utilize all regular actions. In addition, the height decreases at a smaller rate, prolonging the time limit required to defeat the Ifrit. The Ifrit will then attack by bringing his head down in one of three positions and breathe fire for a short while. After the fire subsides, Rings will appear. Occasionally, the Ifrit may also simply launch his head onto his body. The player can attack the Ifrit's head while he is attacking, though this will not count as a hit required to defeat the Ifrit. However, the head needs to be attacked three times in this way which by doing so, the Ifrit will be stunned, dropping his head to the ground for a brief period. Attacking the Ifrit's head while he is stunned will finally damage him. After two hits, the first phase of the battle will begin again.

Repeat the aforementioned processes until the Ifrit is defeated while keeping an eye on the remaining height.

Trivia[]

  • If a character respawns during the first phase due to being hit by the Ifrit's attacks while having no Rings, they will fall below the screen and as they respawn, they appear on a platform, then automatically jump off and free-fall.
  • In the boss fight, the player's rival is highlighted by a green orb (regardless of mode), likely to signify that the rival is being mind-controlled by the Ifrit.
  • If the player does not defeat the Ifrit in time, both characters will still land on top of a ruined building (which is also done when the player defeats the Ifrit) but the Ifrit remains airborne and both characters display their losing animations.
  • In the first phase, the height counter decreases at a rate of approximately 1000 meters per minute. Given that the initial height value at the start of the level is 5000 meters, this effectively causes the player to fail the stage at a minimum (in-game) time of 5 minutes if they do not hit the Ifrit at all. In the second phase, the decreasing height counter's rate is halved compared to the first phase (approximately 500 meters per minute).

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Ifrit appeared in the Sonic Free Comic Book Day 2015. After suffering his previous defeat in Sonic Rivals 2, he apparently survived and later made his way to Sonic's World proper through a Genesis Portal, but was returned to his domain by Sonic and Silver.

Trivia[]

  • The Ifrit's name comes from a supernatural creature in Islam, the Ifrit (عفريت 'iifrit). They are usually a powerful type of jinn with death-spirits.
  • The Ifrit is similar to Iblis from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Both are fiery creatures named after powerful demons from Islamic Knowledge, and both threaten Silver's future. Even the Ifrit's design is similar in appearance to that of Iblis.
  • The Ifrit shares his name with the Ifrit Golem from Sonic and the Secret Rings, and both beings are associated with fire and lava. Coincidentally, they both debuted in the same year (2007).
  • The Ifrit is the only being in the Sonic the Hedgehog series who has been able to manipulate Sonic's mind.
