The Ultrasonic Speed Amplifier[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a device invented by Tails to increase Sonic's speed.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Bandaged sonic

Sonic wearing the chest plate device.

The Ultrasonic Speed Amplifier consists of two components: the control panel and the chest plate. The control panel is a metal panel with a yellow console. It has a white dial rotor to adjust how fast on can go and gauges that monitor how fast one is going. The chest plate is metallic with yellow parts, brown straps and a circular blue center.

Features and abilities[]

FASTER!

Sonic with his speed bolstered by the device.

Using state of the art "blast processing" technology, the Ultrasonic Speed Amplifier sends amplification signals to its chest plate, allowing the wearer to run at superspeed surpassing Sonic's. For speedsters like Sonic, the Ultrasonic Speed Amplifier's speed boost is added to their own natural speed, meaning the users can surpass the speed the device grants even when it exceeds the user's own.[1]

When pushed to the limit, the Ultrasonic Speed Amplifier makes one's molecules vibrate so fast that they are left out of phase with their plane of existence, leaving them stuck in a state where they are unable to perceive beings (organic or robotic) on the main plane and vice versa. However, the user can still interact with the environment and can be faintly glimpsed from the normal plane. Repeating the phasing process returns the user to their original plane. However, the controller cannot send its amplification signals across the planes.[1]

The controller comes equipped with a tracker that records its chest plate's location. After some recalibrations, it also allowed the wielders of the controller and chest plate to communicate with each other across the planes by making each party partially perceivable.[1]

WhatInThe...

Sonic entering another plane of existence due to the device.

To experiment on how to increase Sonic's speed, Tails invented the Ultrasonic Speed Amplifier. However, Sonic got stuck on another plane of existence when using the device. After tracking down and contacting Sonic with the device, Tails used another chest plate to enter Sonic's plane to rescue him. While the device lacked the power for both of them to return home, Sonic was able to run faster than the machine could and pull Tails with him as he rejoined their home plane, though Tails lost the control panel on the other plane.[1]

Trivia[]

  • "Blast Processing" was a marketing term coined by Sega of America to advertise the faster processing performance of the Sega Genesis. It was joked by Sticks and Knuckles on how such words interest the gullible.
