We give thanks for the blessed flames. May we always continue to have peace. Sun of Soleanna, guide and watch over us with your eternal light...

Princess Elise the Third, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

The Festival of the Sun (太陽の祭典 Taiyō no saiten?), also known as the Sun Festival,[1] is an event that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an annual festival celebrated by the people of Soleanna in honor of their patron and sun god, Solaris.[2]

Description[]

The Festival of the Sun is a grand and elaborate ceremony held annually in Soleanna Castle Town, the center of the capital city of Soleanna, where the people of Soleanna gather to pay homage to Solaris, their patron deity and god of the sun.[2]

The festival is held at night, but all buildings and towers are well-lit, and many fireworks are launched, adding a special mood to the event. Although all of the people pray to the sun, the most important actions come from the current monarch of Soleanna. The monarch has the opportunity to travel through the rivers of Soleanna on a wonderful boat, while women dancers dance ballet in front of them in yellow dresses in choreographed manners, making a reference to the sunlight.

After the monarch has traveled through the city, the boat heads for the "Altar of Light" also known as the "Altar of Flame". This altar is placed in the Soleanna Castle Town's central place. When the current monarch arrives, they are greeted by the bishop, then they are given a torch. The monarch is then supposed to light up the altar with the torch while giving thanks to Solaris and praying for peace. As the altar is lit into a beautiful blaze, more fireworks fill the sky, and there is much rejoicing by the general populace.[2]

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the Festival of the Sun was underway, but shortly after Princess Elise had lit up the fountain, Dr. Eggman interrupted the celebration with an attack from his Egg Carrier and surrounded the festival with his robot army. No sooner, Sonic appeared on the scene and took the princess to safety. Following this, the Festival of the Sun was canceled.

When the timeline was reset by Sonic and Elise, history was rewritten so that the Festival of the Sun proceeded without Eggman's interference. This time, Sonic watched the celebration among people.

Trivia[]

  • The festival, in some ways, resembles the practices of Zoroastrians.
  • Despite being dedicated to the sun, the Festival of the Sun is celebrated at night.
  • Visually, the festival bears some resemblances to the Star Festival celebrated by the Mushroom Kingdom citizens in Super Mario Galaxy.
