Ferrons are round robots with long white machettes on their hands, who are seen hovering around with small jet-packs. They have only been featured at Lava Powerhouse, while in the 8-bit version, they are only seen flying around at Toxic Pools. They are usually set on narrow openings of upper pathways and will block the route easily from the player. They don't move away unless the player is clearing him from the way by using flipper to being launched into him. They will respond after couple of seconds after destroying one of them.

Ferrons in Archie Comics.

Ferrons made small appearance in Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog issue 6, that has loose story adaption based on the game. They were created by Doctor Robotnik to halt Sonic the Hedgehog's progression through the levels of the Veg-O-Fortress. Despite outnumbering Sonic, they were defeated when he outwitted them and caused them to crash into each other, destroying them.
