The explosive crate[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a variant of Container that, when destroyed, releases a powerful explosion.

Description

The explosive crate has the same dimensions as the regular Wooden Container, except they possess a red coloration. When destroying an explosive crate in gameplay, it releases a small explosion that deals damage to surrounding enemies. However, the player is unaffected by the explosion. The explosive crate is very fragile though as it detonates if hit by anything.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Wmplayer 2015-02-10 15-24-09-118

An explosive crate among other Containers, from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the explosive crate is made of red and black metal with red frames and is emblazoned with a white and red flame-symbol. They can be found everywhere in the game, and are the third-most common form of Container. When destroyed, they deal one hit's worth of damage to all enemies in its vicinity. Additionally, they are useful for gaining extra points; if the player detonates the crate inside a cluster of enemies and it takes all the enemies out, the player will earn bonus points.

In Sonic's version of Radical Train, Sonic must rescue a train before it crashes into a bomb consisting of a pile of explosive crates that blocks the train track. The player needs to activate a Switch to destroy them, as they are blocked from the player's attacks by a laser field. During Shadow's stages, however, the Explosive crates sometimes serve as obstacles when the player is riding a vehicle. Ramming into an Explosive crate with a vehicle will make it explode and deplete the vehicle's Health Gauge.

Sonic Unleashed

Player 2015-07-11 22-30-44-672

An explosive crate, from the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed.

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, the explosive crates look much like wooden Containers, except they have a red burst-like symbol on their surface. They appear only in a few of the game's nighttime Action Stages. In addition to detonating it by attacking, the player can grab it by pressing Circle/XboxB and then throw it at enemy who has a reticle over it.

The explosive crate is an especially effective weapon against Big Mothers. By throwing the explosive crate into a Big Mother's open mouth, the beast will swallow the crate as it explodes, causing its body to comically expand and deal it damage while stunning it.

An explosive breakable block from Sonic and the Black Knight.

In Sonic and the Black Knight, the breakable block obstacles include an alternate version of the explosive crate with a medieval motif.
