The Explosive Mine is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series

In gameplay, the Explosive Mine can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Omega , Knuckles , Metal Sonic , Sir Gawain , Tails Nine , Wave , Zavok , and Zeena . As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Explosive Mine if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned users.
Once obtained, the player can utilize the Explosive Mine by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the Explosive Mine will drop its iron balls some distance ahead of the user's current location on all the lanes that the user is not currently on. If a character, including the user themselves, touches one of these iron balls, they will explode and damage the character, causing them to lose Rings and slow down momentarily. To avoid the Explosive Mine, the playable character must either jump over its iron balls or run in-between them.
The Explosive Mine can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 4, 10 and 16 respectively. For each upgrade, the player will increase the damage dealt with the Explosive Mine. In Metal Sonic's case, he has first upgrade (after he unlocked) of Explosive Mine, his fourth upgrade of the Explosive Mine (as well as Metal Sonic's level 16 upgrade) which will deal more damage.
