Experience Points,[1] also referred to as Experience,[2] EXP,[2] and XP for short, is a recurring mechanic in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a unit of measurement used to quantify a playable character's progression through the different games.
Description
The use of EXP is to quantify a player character's progression through the different games. The means of awarding EXP depend on the different the games, but they are generally awarded for the completion of missions, killing enemies, and collecting various objects. When a character has gotten enough EXP, they will "level up", achieving the next stage of character development. Such an event usually increases the character's abilities and grants all-new abilities as well. With each level up, the player needs to collect more EXP than before to reach the next level.
Game appearances
Sonic and the Secret Rings
In Sonic and the Secret Rings, EXP is used to improve Sonic the Hedgehog's abilities. In this game, EXP is gained through various methods including, but not limited to: killing enemies, collecting Rings, and finishing missions quickly.
When leveling up through EXP, the player is gradually given new Skills that they can equip to Sonic. Some Skills also make it easier to gain EXP, such as "Expert Drift", which grants bonus EXP when turning a corner.
Sonic Unleashed
In Sonic Unleashed, EXP is granted from collecting certain objects. On the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, it is Chaos Orbs, and on the Wii/PlayStation 2 version it is red Dark Gaia Force. Both these objects can be collected from defeated enemies on their respective versions, although only select enemies release red Dark Gaia Force on the Wii/PlayStation 2 version. On the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, the player can also gather red Dark Gaia Force from breaking environmental objects and certain Item Capsules. Also, on the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, the player can increase Sonic's Experience by feeding him edible items.
On the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of the game, EXP is only used to increase Sonic the Werehog's parameters. These includes increasing Sonic's Life Gauge, attack power and Unleashed Gauge. Also, as the player levels up, more Skills will become available.
On the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of the game, EXP is applied to both Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Werehog. For Sonic the Hedgehog, EXP is used to increase his "Speed" (Sonic's running speed) and "Ring Energy" (size of his Ring Energy Gauge) parameter. For Sonic the Werehog, EXP is used to upgrade his "Combat" (number of Skill available), "Strength" (attack power), "Life" (size of his Life Gauge), "Unleash" (size of his Unleashed Gauge) and "Shield" (size of his Shield Gauge) parameters. The amount of EXP each parameter require are as following:

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, the Experience Points (often referred to as XP) are featured in a manner similar to most other RPG games. The manner of gaining EXP is also the same, as the player gains varying amounts of EXP for each battle and mission completed, with the EXP amount depending on how powerful the enemies are or how difficult the missions were. However, the higher the player level is (with the level cap at level 30), the less EXP will the player be rewarded with from battles. When leveling up, the characters' Speed, Attack, Defense, Luck, HP, and PP stats all increase.
Among the Chao in the game, a unique Chao named Choopaloo can boost the amount of EXP the player receives. The higher level Choopaloo is, the more it boosts the player's EXP.
Sonic and the Black Knight
In Sonic and the Black Knight, EXP is referred to as Followers. In this game, it is represented by the Townspersons, which symbolize the trust and loyalty Sonic has earned from the residents in the world of Camelot.
In this game, Followers are gained from completing Missions and are used to increase the player's Title. The higher the player's title is, the more Skills will Sonic be able to use during gameplay.
Sonic Forces: Speed Battle
In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, Experience Points (referred to here as XP) are rewarded to the player every time a character is upgraded. When a player's level increases, their Ring Boost and Resistance also increase:

Sonic Forces
In Sonic Forces, experience is gained for the Avatar through the final scores tallied at the end of the stages played as Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic, the Avatar, or Tag Team with both Modern Sonic and the Avatar. After the final score is added up, the points convert to experience for the Avatar, allowing them to level up, represented by the medals located under the characters as they strike their victory poses after clearing a stage. At first, when the Avatar starts out at Level 1, there is only one bronze medal. As they level up, the bronze medals increase up to four, then at Level 5, convert to a silver medal. After earning another four bronze medals after that at Levels 6-9, the four bronze and the silver medal convert to a gold medal at Level 10, then the cycle repeats for Levels 11-20 and 21-30, allowing the Avatar to earn up to 3 gold medals by the time they max out at Level 30. Each Avatar created by the player will have their own individual experience pool, allowing a chance to try some variety with each of the seven animals choices for the Avatar. More points and experience can be gained by completing the Daily Mission challenges and maintaining the Daily Mission Bonus multiplier at its maximum of x3.0 during the 30-minute period it is available for.
