Exorcisms

Exorcisms (除霊, Jorei^?) are optional side missions in the Xbox 360/Playstation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed. It enables the player to purge townspeople possessed by Dark Gaia's Minions.

Exorcisms are a function that lets the player drive Dark Gaia's Minions out of the townspeople in the Town Stages. At night, townspeople possessed by Dark Gaia's Minions exhibit abnormal behavior for them, have purple smoke around their heads, and may even have something extra next to their names in their speech bubbles (for example, "Kwami Acting Strangely").

After clearing Rooftop Run Night Act 1, Tails will give the player the “Uncanny Camera”, which releases Dark Gaia's Minions from townspeople at night. After that, upon encountering a possessed townsperson, the player can exorcise them by pressing / when in front of them. The player will then be thrown into a time trial where they have to defeat several of Dark Gaia's Minions before time runs out. These missions allow the player to get experience and unlock other Missions from the townspeople. Exorcising all people in the game will also grant the player the “Get on the Exorcise Bandwagon” achievement/trophy.

The following list contains a complete summary of people possessed by Dark Gaia's Minions. In this list, the used terms mean the following: Time means how much time the player is given to defeat the enemies, and Enemies refers to the number and types of enemies that appear during the exorcism.

Archie Comics

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, exorcisms appeared during the Shattered World Crisis. On Isolated Island, Sally and Dr. Ellidy got into a heated argument about Nikki and Nicole, since they were being affected by Dark Gaia's energies, but Sally broke it up upon realizing it. During Team Dark, Knuckles and Amy's trip to the Mystic Cave Zone, Shadow explained that at night, people get possessed by Dark Gaia's evil energies, and as a result, G.U.N. spreads robotic troops to ensure safety.
