An Energy Dome is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. Energy Domes are also sometimes referred to as Protective Shields, Barriers, or simply Force Fields.

Description[]

Energy Domes are a defense system installed in many cities across Mobius, acting as a major source of defense for cities against outside attacks. When activated, these domes surround the city in a transparent energy field that can withstand attacks and prevent others from entering or exiting the city. The force fields tend to look akin to glass.

History[]

The first Energy Dome seen is the one around Sand Blast City. When Sonic and Tails ended up in said city, the Sand-Blasters put up the force field to prevent Sonic and Tails from leaving, as they wanted the 2 to stay in the city to help them deal with the Robians, even if it was against there will. However, Sonic managed to destroy the force field, allowing him and Tails to escape the city, but also leaving the Sand-Blasters vulnerable to a Robian invasion.[1][2]

When OTIS detected that Eggman and Robotropolis were a threat to the safety of Station Square, it launched several atomic missiles at the city. As a means of preventing the nuclear fallout from harming Knothole Village, Sonic and Tails managed to trick Eggman into putting up his city's dome field as a means of containing the poisonous fallout all within the barrier.[3]

Later, Eggman would attempt to take advantage of this nuclear fallout by attempting to disable the dome that was around Robotropolis, as he wanted to release the poison within the barrier out into the world, and so he sent his War-Bot army to Robotropolis, however, many fighters at Fort Acorn stopped his attempts to bring the barrier down.[4][5] Later on, the Jun Kun would also similarly seek to bring down the dome shield around Robotropolis, but likewise fail, being stopped by the efforts of Sonic, Monkey Khan and Amadeus Prower.[6]

A separate Energy Dome is also seen when Eggman is attempting to breach the Chaos Chamber to acquire the Chaos Emerald on Angel Island as a means of turning Chaos into Perfect Chaos. Eggman notes that some parts of a barrier are weaker than others, something he can pinpoint using his Multi-Option Analyzer.[7]

When Eggman attacked New Mobotropolis soon after Nicole had teleported everyone to the city, Nicole used the defense systems of city to put up a Energy Dome around them, protecting the whole city from the Egg Fleet's assault. She did, however, open up a small hole in the dome so Sonic, the other Knothole Freedom Fighters, and the Chaotix could leave the city and confront Eggman.[8]

Dr. Kintobor from Moebius also uses a Energy Dome to protect the Grand Forest, although his is deliberatley designed to be invisible to the eye.[9]
