The Ener-Rail,[1] also referred to as the Zip-line, is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic Boom series. By using the Enerbeam on these rails, the player can ride them to different locations.

Description[]

Ener-Rails are basically extensive rails that float in midair. At the beginning of them, they have a metal cap covering their starting point.

In gameplay, the Ener-Rails' purpose is to serve as alternate pathways through levels instead of running paths, or as means to cross otherwise impassable gaps. Using the Enerbeam on an Ener-Rail makes the player latch onto it and ride down its rail automatically to its end at high speed. While riding an Ener-Rail, the user dangles from it via the Enerbeam, and can tilt left and right, usually to avoid obstacles or picking up objects. In some cases, there will also be Ener-Rails running parallel to others at close range. In such cases, the player can switch over to the parallel Ener-Rail to avoid falling off the Ener-Rail they are on. Sometimes, Ener-Rails are mandatory, while others are just optional shortcuts that allows the player to skip a given section.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric[]

Riding the Ener-Rails

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, the Ener-Rails are depicted as glowing blue cords and can be found in all the game's regular levels and hub levels. On an Ener-Rail, the player can encounter obstacles like pendulums with spiked balls (which sometimes swing) that are attached to the Ener-Rail, or environmental hazards like falling buildings and boulders. There is also one case where Lyric appears and shoots at the player. Such obstacles can be avoided by tilting the character while they hang from the Ener-Rail. Sometimes, to activate them, the player must to solve certain puzzles or toggle Buttons, or touch boards hanging above speed sections which will create a route to an optional Ener-Rail.

To latch onto an Ener-Rail, the player has to press WiiDSA when near one. While riding an Ener-Rail, the player can briefly swing left or right by using the left analog stick.

There are times where the Ener-Rail ends over a bottomless pit. In such cases, there will be nearby Ener-Rails that they player can switch over to by pressing WiiDSA and still preserve their momentum.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal[]

To latch onto an Ener-Rail, the player has to press WiiDSA (the game tells when to press when necessary). While riding an Ener-Rail, the player can swing left or right for as long as desired by using the left analog stick.

In Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, the Ener-Rails have the same design they had in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. Here, the player will automatically latch onto an Ener-Rail for a short while every time they obtain the "Enerbeam" powerup. While riding an Ener-Rail, the player can swing left or right for as long as desired by tilting their playing device. While riding the Ener-Rail, the player will find Rings and Orbs, and can pass through Hoops.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice[]
