Emerl (エメル Emeru?) is a fictional character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He was an ancient and powerful Gizoid that was created 4,000 years ago by the Fourth Great Civilization. Millennia later, Emerl was discovered by Gerald Robotnik, who, in an attempt to quell his destructive tendencies, gave him a "soul" based on that of his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik. In the present day, Emerl was acquired by Dr. Eggman, who tried to use him for world domination, but threw him away when he refused to respond to his commands. He was later found by Sonic the Hedgehog, who, together with his friends and allies, shaped Emerl into an independent and free being. Tragically, Emerl was destroyed by Sonic when he went haywire and tried to destroy the earth.

Emerl was a humanoid, mostly mustard-yellow, robot. He possessed five-fingered olive-brown hands and feet in the shape of shoes with orange soles. His upper arms, abdomen and thighs were olive-brown, and he had spherical orange joints as shoulders and pelvis-legs joints. He also had relatively thick armor around his forearms and lower legs (each one possessing orange cuffs), thick kneecaps, and some kind of jetpack on his back. On his chest, he had three beige circles. Lastly, he possessed a spherical head with a beige mouth plate, blue eyes, orange caps for ears, and a curved orange horn with a concealed blue eye on it on his forehead.
Emerl was created 4,000 years ago by the Fourth Great Civilization. Back then, he was only known as the "Gizoid", which in ancient tongue means "everything". It was during this period that this robot used his power to acquire all the data there was about all the melee combat and weapons of that age. Eventually though, the Gizoid's great power caused the destruction of the Fourth Great Civilization, and the Gizoid himself vanished, reduced to a shadow of his former glory.
Eventually, the Gizoid was found in modern times in the ancient ruins. He soon after ended up in a warehouse where he was discovered by Professor Gerald Robotnik over fifty years ago. Gerald took the lifeless Gizoid to the Space Colony ARK, where he unintentionally managed to activate him while experimenting on the Chaos Emeralds. The Gizoid and its connection to the Chaos Emeralds made Gerald conduct extensive research on the subject, which led him to speculate the Gizoid's role in the Fourth Great Civilization's fate. During this, the Gizoid would watch Gerald's movements and mimic all that he did. The Gizoid was as well scanned by Gerald, but the amount of combat and weapon data he possessed caused Gerald's most powerful computer to crash. Regardless, it made Gerald realize what a horrible superweapon the Gizoid would become should he be restored to his former state. Despite seemingly lacking chaos energy, the Gizoid was able to say the word "Link" to Gerald in broken tones before explaining the following: "Show me your true strength, and I shall obey. I am all things, and all shall belong to me." It an attempt to make the Gizoid swear loyalty to him and thus curb the danger the robot posed, Gerald demonstrated his collection of model guns to him. This made the Gizoid form a Link with Gerald, prompting him to swear loyalty to Gerald and to never leave his side. After that, the Gizoid refused to listen to anyone else but Gerald.
When the government threatened to freeze Project Shadow and shut down the Space Colony ARK, Gerald offered the Gizoid as a bribe to the government in order to buy more time to finish Shadow and use him to save his granddaughter, Maria. Before handing him over though, Gerald tried commanding the Gizoid not to absorb any technologies. However, the Gizoid was subsequently subjected to weapon-absorbing experiments onboard the Space Colony ARK in attempts to override his Link with Gerald and have him establish a new one with a superior power. Eventually, with a Chaos Emerald installed into him, the Gizond absorbed so much weaponry and technology that he went out of control and destroyed most of the Space Colony Ark before being subdued and sealed away. The Gizoid eventually fell into Gerald's possession again, but his attempts to destroy the robot's core were met with failure. As an alternative, he tried to reprogam his AI into a free-willed, emotions-based one. Eventually, he managed to give the Gizoid a code-based "soul" identical to his granddaughter Maria's. To reset the Gizoid and activate his new AI however, he had to be given special keywords when his true self awoke, which would be when all seven Chaos Emeralds were inserted into him. The keywords themselves were the last words spoken by Maria when she died: "Bring hope to humanity." Afterward, the Gizoid was sealed by the government.
In Sonic Battle, the Gizoid was recovered by Dr. Eggman, who sought to use him for world domination. Using the Gizoid's data, he created the E-121 Phis for himself. In addition, Eggman gave the Gizoid a Chaos Emerald. However, he refused to fight upon Eggman's orders and would not give him the Emerald back. Deeming him useless, Eggman threw out the Gizoid and decided to rely on his Phis. Ending up on Emerald Beach, the Gizoid was found by Sonic. Speaking in broken words, the Gizoid asked Sonic to show him his power. Sonic replied by showing him some moves, prompting the Gizoid to make a Link with him. Sonic then tried taking the Gizoid to Tails, but the two were intercepted by Shadow, who sought to destroy the Gizoid. After the two of them made Shadow retreat, the Gizoid and Sonic met Tails, who took the former to his laboratory. There, the Gizoid was analyzed by Tails, who discovered his power duplication function and ability to grow with each Chaos Emerald he acquired. After Sonic returned, the Gizoid was tested out by Sonic, who decided to train him after seeing the Gizoid's potential. After going a few more rounds with the Gizoid, Sonic and Tails took him with them to Knuckles to get a Chaos Emerald from him for the Gizoid, whom Sonic decided to name "Emerl" as a (unimaginative) reference to what he was powered by. Along the way, Emerl was allowed to drive off a Phi they encountered by Sonic. Soon after, the trio was attacked by Chaos Gamma in Holy Summit, but they were able to drive him off. Upon arriving at Knuckles' house though, Emerl was mistaken for a Phi by Knuckles, who decided to fight him. However, Emerl was able to beat Knuckles. Afterward, Emerl received Knuckles' Chaos Emerald, thus allowing him to speak his first full sentence.
While sparring with each other later on, Emerl and Sonic were found by Tails, whom Sonic coaxed into sparring with them. Afterward, Tails convinced Sonic to let him take Emerl to Central City for a full inspection of him. However, Emerl refused to go with Tails until Sonic told him to obey Tails. Along the way, the two drove off some Phis attacking them. Upon arriving at the Central Lab however, they were denied access by the security guard. While looking for way in, Emerl and Tails came across Rouge, who offered them a lab pass if they could beat her in a duel. Passing Rouge's test, Emerl and Tails got the lab pass and got into the Central Lab. There, Emerl was plugged into the main computer. Upon analyzing Emerl's structural data however, Tails uncovered some secret files, from which he learned that Emerl was an ancient superweapon of mass destruction. However, this triggered the security, which caused Guard Robos to pursue Emerl and Tails. Though Emerl and Tails were able to escape the lab and fight off some Guard Robos, the robots kept coming. As such, they tried escaping to Holy Summit via the Central Highway. However, they were intercepted by Shadow, who had not given up his goal of destroying Emerl. As Tails fought to protect him, Emerl would help, and together they held their own against Shadow. However, their duel was interrupted by Rouge, who warned them that Guard Robos were coming before taking the wounded Shadow away. Afterward, Emerl and Tails made it to Holy Summit following another fight with a Guard Robo. Having escaped the robots, Emerl and Tails encountered Knuckles, whom Emerl unintentionally annoyed until he fought him. After Emerl beat Knuckles, Tails convinced Knuckles to come with them to Emerald Beach. However, the trio was intercepted by Chaos Gamma. As they fought him, Knuckles decided to stay and distract Chaos Gamma while Emerl and Tails made their way back to Sonic. There, Emerl stood on the sidelines while Tails and the newly-arrived Rouge told Sonic the whole story about Emerl. In addition, Rouge told Sonic and Tails how they could reset Emerl and his destructive programming with the Chaos Emeralds. During their conversation, Emerl was instructed by Sonic to listen to Rouge after she convinced Sonic to give him that command. However, Rouge then suddenly left. Afterward, Knuckles showed up, only to get angry at Emerl when he would not talk to him. Emerl was then ordered by Sonic to directly ignore Knuckles, which made Knuckles decide to settle the score with Sonic in a fight, which Emerl joined in on.
Emerl would later hang out with Sonic and Tails at the beach when Amy showed up. Instructed to listen to Amy, Emerl was left with Tails while Sonic ran away. However, Tails left soon after as well, thus leaving Emerl in the care of Amy, who had gotten the wrong idea about Emerl and had him refer to her as his "mommy". Rouge then showed up and kidnapped Emerl after defeating Amy when she tried to protect him. Since Emerl had been ordered to listen to Rouge earlier, he did not oppose Rouge as he was taken away. On the way to Rouge's hideout in Night Babylon, Rouge and Emerl drove off Chaos Gamma when he attacked them. When they arrived at Club "Rouge" though, Amy showed up to rescue Emerl, only to be defeated again. Afterward, Rouge had Emerl undergo some special training in order to make him the ultimate robot jewel thief. Later, Rouge took him out to steal a Chaos Emerald from a jewelery store in Emerald Town. On the way there however, Emerl and Rouge were attacked by Amy again. After defeating her, Emerl helped Rouge break into the store and steal the Chaos Emerald. Upon seeing the Emerald however, Emerl took it from Rouge and absorbed it. Emerl then informed Rouge that Sonic was coming. After Sonic fought Rouge, with some subsequent help from Tails and Knuckles, Emerl was overjoyed to "play" with Sonic again. Deciding he was not worth the trouble, Rouge gave Emerl back to Sonic.
Emerl later hung out with Tails at his lab when Knuckles showed up to train Emerl. Happy with that, Emerl trained with Knuckles until they heard a news report about a Phi in Night Babylon. Emerl and Knuckles subsequently set out to take care of the Phi. When they arrived in Central City, they came across Amy and defeated Chaos Gamma when he attacked them. After the latter, Rouge appeared and gave them some background info on Chaos Gamma. As she left, she asked them to be careful, as Chaos Gamma probably wanted revenge on Emerl for taking Eggman's Chaos Emerald. When the duo arrived in Night Babylon though, a clerk mistook Emerl for a Phi when they asked around, and summoned a Guard Robo. After defeating the Guard Robo, Emerl's impatience got on Knuckles' nerves until he yelled at him. Getting upset, Emerl called for Sonic. After trying to calm Emerl down, Knuckles let him be by himself while he looked ahead. However, Emerl would run away to find Sonic. Ending up at Club "Rouge", Emerl would fight Rouge until Knuckles came. Not long after, two Phis surfaced nearby, which Emerl and Knuckles destroyed. Obtaining the Phis' Emerald Shards, Emerl and Knuckles received an Emerald Shard from Rouge as well, which they brought back to Tails. There, Tails explained that if they brought him two more shards of the same color, he could assemble them into a whole Chaos Emerald. Emerl then came with Knuckles to Emerald Beach to train some more. There, Emerl earned Knuckles' respect. Dr. Eggman then arrived and dispatched a Phi to fight them. Destroying the Phi, Emerl and Knuckles took its Emerald Shard and pursued Eggman to Central City, where they destroyed another Phi Eggman sent after them and took its Emerald Shard. Emerl then followed Knuckles to Eggman's hideout, the Gimme Shelter. However, it turned out Knuckles had been lured there by Eggman, who caught Knuckles in his "spiky rodent trap" upon his arrival. Emerl was then left to fight Chaos Gamma on his own while Eggman left. Regardless, Emerl still won and took advantage of Eggman's absence to free Knuckles. The duo then returned to Tails and had him put their Emerald Shards together. Emerl then absorbed the assembled Chaos Emerald. Afterward, Emerl was told by Knuckles to keep it a secret that Eggman had tricked him again. Having no concept of secrets however, Emerl told both Tails and Sonic about Knuckles' screw-up immediately afterwards.
Later, Emerl was with Sonic, who ran away when Amy showed up. Emerl, however, followed Sonic to the beach. There, Amy caught up with them. Emerl soon after behaved inappropriately towards Amy, prompting Sonic to run away before Amy could punish him for his parenting. Emerl was thus left with Amy. However, he soon wandered off by himself and came across two Phis. Fortunately, Amy came and helped him destroy the Phis. Taking their Emerald Shards, Amy decided to help Emerl find more to make Emerl grow and prove herself a capable mother and wife to Sonic. Emerl was then taken to Amy's apartment in Central City by Amy to train Emerl upon his request. There, he was introduced to Cream and Cheese, before Amy had him help her with her boxercise. Eventually, Emerl gave an exhausted Amy a break. When he returned after fighting off a Phi, Cream told him that Amy was resting and explained her reasons for exercising so hard. Amy soon after recovered, and Emerl gladly continued to help her excise alongside Cream. When a tired Amy collapsed though, Emerl detected a Chaos Emerald nearby. He and Amy thus left to find it, only to get attacked by Chaos Gamma upon their departure. After defeating Chaos Gamma, who escaped afterwards, Emerl and Amy followed the Emerald signal to Night Babylon. There, they found and destroyed two Phis and obtained their Emerald Shards. Emerl then detected another Chaos Emerald at Club "Rouge". There, they found Rouge, who had an Emerald Shard. After getting into a physical argument with the pair, Rouge agreed to give them her shard if Emerl could defeat her without special attacks. With Amy accepting the terms, Emerl faced and defeated Rouge, who gave them the shard as promised. Emerl and Amy were then warned by Rouge that Eggman was probably planning something to reobtain Emerl. Before leaving though, Emerl detected the Chaos Emerald that Shadow, who was sleeping in Club "Rouge", had, and Rouge warned them Shadow would come for Emerl when he woke up. Disregarding her warning, Emerl and Amy went to Tails, who assembled their Emerald Shards into a whole Chaos Emerald, which was absorbed by Emerl. Sonic later returned, and Emerl saw Sonic slip away when Amy tried making him propose to her. Amy believed this meant Sonic was shy, but Emerl believed that was not the case.
As Emerl helped Amy and Cream with Amy's diet, Amy left to buy an diet machine. Sonic and Tails also dropped by to inform them that they would go look for a Chaos Emerald mentioned in the news. However, Emerl was left with Cream to keep him safe from Eggman. As Emerl then wondered about the purpose of Amy's diet, Cream tried to explain how love motivates one to do anything for someone else (with Amy trying to get thin to impress Sonic), although Emerl did not fully understand it. It was then that Eggman appeared and paralyzed Emerl with a new trap, having set up Sonic's departure with a fake news story to leave Emerl unprotected. Emerl, Cream, and Cheese were then taken to the Gimme Shelter by Phis. There, Emerl and Cream roamed around after Emerl recovered. However, they were attacked by Guard Robos at an assembly line. Although Emerl beat them, he saw that Cream refused to fight. She told him that violence made her sad, and explained to Emerl what sadness was. The two were soon after attacked by two Phis, whom Emerl faced alone since Cream refused to fight. Destroying the Phis, Emerl recovered two Emerald Shards, which he gave to Cream, and assured her that everything was okay. Soon after, Emerl and Cream saw Eggman coming. Hiding Cream and posing as a Phi, Emerl listened as Eggman told him that he planned to capture Sonic using Cream. He also learned from Eggman that they could escape through the local Duct using a key in the workshop. Going to the workshop, Emerl and Cream were attacked by two Phis, but Emerl destroyed them and took their Emerald Shards. However, Emerl's rough treatment of the Phis made Cream cry, which stuck with Emerl. Obtaining the key, the duo made it to the Duct, only to be attacked by Chaos Gamma, who was empowered by an Emerald Shard. However, Emerl refused to fight, not wanting to make Cream sad again. After getting pummeled though, Emerl was saved by Cream and Cheese, who fought Chaos Gamma. However, Chaos Gamma quickly recovered, so Emerl and Cream fled. Finding a hiding place, Emerl comforted a sad Cream by restoring himself. Emerl and Cream then decided to train together to get the skills to defeat Chaos Gamma. Some time after, Emerl and Cream heard Eggman try, and fail, to convince Sonic via radio that he held them hostage. Deciding to escape before Eggman could catch Sonic, Emerl and Cream challenged Chaos Gamma together and beat him before claiming his Emerald Shard, which joined their other shards to form a whole Chaos Emerald, which Emerl then absorbed. Emerl and Cream then trapped Eggman in his own "spiky rodent trap" and called Sonic so he could meet up with them, with Emerl bringing along Cream and Cheese.
While at Tails' place, Emerl sensed the last Chaos Emerald nearby. Finding Sonic and Shadow, who held the Chaos Emerald, Emerl began demanding the Emerald without realizing it. After calming down though, a confused Emerl was told by Sonic to go with Shadow and find out who he really was by getting the answer from Eggman himself. Finding the idea fun, Emerl agreed to it. On their way to Eggman's base though, Emerl and Shadow were attacked by Chaos Gamma. After being defeated, Chaos Gamma was left in the streets, unable to move. Emerl was then told by Shadow that this was the fate awaiting weapons of war like themselves, which Emerl did not understand, but still felt sad about. Arriving at Eggman's Mother Computer, the duo tried to find the answer to who they really were. It was then that Rouge appeared. She had read Prof. Gerald Robotnik's notes and told them that Gerald gave them both "souls" based on Maria Robotnik's so they could have feelings and decide not to cause destruction despite being made for war. She also told Emerl about how Gerald added a special code to his systems that would reset his destructive programming and turn him into an ordinary robot once he had absorbed all seven Chaos Emeralds and received Gerald's keywords. After Shadow had reflected upon what he had learned, Emerl received the seventh Chaos Emerald from Shadow. As Emerl's true nature awoke, he was reset with all his memories intact upon hearing Shadow's speak Gerald's keywords: "Bring hope to humanity." With Emerl now free, Shadow challenged him to a fight to see who was truly the strongest. Emerl accepted, although during their fight, Rouge left them to themselves. Emerl then asked Shadow to let him see his friends once more before they resumed their fight. Shadow agreed to this and told him that they would fight again after Emerl had beaten all his friends. After Emerl had seen and defeated his friends, he returned to Shadow and defeated him. Immediately after though, Sonic showed up to challenge Emerl alongside Shadow. Emerl accepted this, and promptly defeated both hedgehogs. After the fight, Emerl thanked Sonic and Shadow for everything and for raising him safely. As Shadow took his leave, Emerl was left with one final order by Sonic: live his life to the fullest. As Emerl agreed to this though, Sonic told him that he still needed to work on his punches.
Emerl was later hanging out with Sonic when Eggman showed up to announce that he would use his Final Egg Blaster on his newest Death Egg to conquer the world before escaping. Sonic and Emerl subsequently met up with Tails, who had brought a transporter to the Death Egg with him. There, Emerl was chosen by Sonic to stop Eggman since the transporter could only send one person at the time. Making it onboard the Death Egg, Emerl was contacted by Tails, who told him that he, Sonic, and everyone else Emerl had befriended were monitoring him. Emerl subsequently found Eggman, whom he engaged in battle and defeated. As Eggman begged for mercy, Emerl decided to leave him be, although not before thanking him for awakening him so that he could meet his friends and learn about friendship. However, Eggman's act was but a distraction, which allowed him to destroy a cluster of stars with the Final Egg Blaster. This incredible display of power caused Emerl's innate programming to kick in, which forced him to caputure the energy he observed in an effort to forge a new Link, which Eggman hoped would be with him. However, the energy proved too much for Emerl's systems, causing him to go haywire and revert back to his original persona as a superweapon. Taking control of the Final Egg Blaster, Emerl prepared to fire it at the earth. Eggman tried to intervene, but Emerl dispatched him. As Emerl prepared the Final Egg Blaster however, Sonic showed up on the Death Egg with the Master Emerald in order to cut off the Chaos Emerald energy feeding Emerl. However, Emerl smashed the Master Emerald to pieces, thus forcing Sonic to fight Emerl to put a stop to him. Although Sonic suceeded, Emerl had suffered too much damage, leaving him on the verge of destruction. Regaining his senses, Emerl contemplated his existence as his life faded. He also thanked Sonic and his friends back home for everything and gave Sonic some parting words. Acting then upon Gerald's final program, which dictated that a weapon should terminate itself if it got out of control, Emerl self-destructed in a flash, leaving behind only the shards of the Chaos Emeralds.
Sonic Advance 3
In Sonic Advance 3, Dr. Eggman used Emerl's data to create a spiritual successor of some sort to Emerl, named G-merl. This robot served as Eggman's personal enforcer during another one of his schemes to conquer the world. Eventually though, G-merl went haywire and began a rampage until he was stopped by Super Sonic and Eggman. After the battle, G-merl was found and reprogrammed by Tails into a friendly and kind robot, much like Emerl. G-merl soon after became friends with Cream and came to live with her family.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Emerl did not appear in person, but the game makes several references to him. In this game, Emerl was created as the finest and most powerful of the Gizoids more than four thousand years prior to the events of Sonic Battle by the Nocturnus Clan for the purpose of aiding the Nocturnus Clan in conquering the ancient world. During his brief time with the Nocturnus Clan, Emerl befriended Nestor the Wise.
With Emerl's creation, the Nocturnus Clan had become so powerful that they caught the attention of Argus, who transported the entire Nocturnus Clan and the Gizoid army into the Twilight Cage. Emerl somehow avoided imprisonment however, and was the only one from the Nocturnus Clan to do so. While the Nocturnus Clan faded into legend, history came to regard Emerl as the one who destroyed his civilization, and Emerl himself was lost.
Emerl has his own entry in the codex elaborating on his background, and the main cast recalls Emerl as they unravel the mysteries of the Gizoids and encounter Nestor, who personally knew Emerl during his time in the Nocturnus Clan.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
In his base state, Emerl possessed no personality of his own. Since his main power was to copy the skills and traits of others, he would carry over the behavior patterns and personality traits of those he mimicked. A constant exhibited by him however was that he would only listen to those who could demonstrate their true strength to him. Once that requirement was met, Emerl would establish a contract with his new master and submit himself to them with unwavering loyalty. This contract is referred to as a "Link". While a Link was in play, Emerl would vow to never leave his master's side and ignore others' commands unless he was ordered by his master to obey someone else or he established a new Link with someone who demonstrated an overwhelming power.
Designed to be powered by Chaos Emeralds, Emerl grew mentally with each Chaos Emeralds he absorbed. When he first was found by Sonic, Emerl, who only had one Chaos Emerald at the time, was like a baby and incapable of doing anything beyond basic behavior, like walking and (incomplete) fighting skills. However, he could still operate upon his base programming of forging Links with powerful individuals and seeking to a make all things his. As a result, Emerl showed an interest in playing with others in order to learn new things. As he spent more time with Sonic and everyone else though, Emerl would steadily evolve from the state of an infant to that of a self-sufficient and mature individual.
Possessing an artificial intelligence, Emerl is capable of feeling genuine emotions. Early on though, Emerl was a little naïve about emotions and did not understand more complex feelings, such as love. However, as he grew and learned from others, he got wiser about emotions in general.
Early on, Emerl's personality was a sort of amalgam identity from every person he had met, incorporating each of these people's traits into himself and bringing them together. He originally demonstrated each of the more prominent traits of others, resulting in contradicting behavior, but as he developed, these trains mended out and became more in tune with each other. However, Emerl was most prominently influenced by Sonic, to the point that some people would comment on how similar they were. Emerl would therefore often show impatience, a laid-back attitude, a carefree demeanor, and at times an arrogant, smug, and self-confident attitude. However, these qualities would be tempered by a certain sense of politeness instilled in him by Amy. He likewise never tried intentionally to make a girl cry, as Sonic had told him that this was the worst thing a person could do, and would feel regret when he accidently did it.
What Emerl maintained through his upbringing was a passion for fighting and martial arts. Whenever there was a fight brewing, Emerl would gladly participate in it, referring to such activities as "playing". Originally, Emerl would fight rather roughly, if not ruthlessly, but after learning about sadness from Cream and how his behavior impacted others, Emerl learned to restrain himself, to the point where he would refuse to fight back, even when getting pummeled, for the sake of a friend. This also taught Emerl about empathy, which led him to feel sympathy for living beings.
At the end of his upbringing, after being freed from his past as a weapon, Emerl had become a confident, kind, courageous, noble, sympathetic and a little smug robot with a bit of an attitude and mouth. He also cherished his feelings of friendship and the people he had made connections with.
When found by Sonic, Emerl possessed no ability to speak properly, being only capable of uttering a few broken sentences. However, with each subsequent Chaos Emerald he absorbed, his vocabulary would grow. After getting his second Emerald, with the exception of the first words he spoke after that, Emerl could say (and repeat) single words or sentences that he just heard; after getting his third Emerald, he could speak words and sentences he had heard before independently, although he would mix others' manners of speaking together which would make his behavior hard to define; after getting his fourth Emerald, Emerl could speak more independent sentences, although he would occasionally mix others' way of speaking into his sentences as well; after getting his fifth Emerald, Emerl could speak more intelligently and in his own words; and after getting his sixth and seventh Emerald, he could speak entirely in his own way without the influence of others.
Despite the kindness and sympathetic attitude he came to possess under Sonic's care, as the ancient weapon of legend in his previous life, Emerl was a seemingly lethal and mindless war machine with unparalleled destructive tendencies, which was best demonstrated by how he actively sought to destroy the earth with the Final Egg Blaster after running amok, all while showing cold and emotionless machine-like behavior. He also seemed hungry for power, given how he automatically began demanding his seventh Chaos Emerald once he sensed it. In addition, given that ancient stone tablets referred to him as a "god of wrath" back then, it would imply that this side of him possessed quite the temper.
Should Emerl go out of control, he will act upon the final program installed into him by Prof. Gerald Robotnik, which dictates that weapon should terminate itself if it goes out of control, and self-destruct.
Powers and abilities
Described as the ultimate combat weapon of his age and the world's deadliest weapon, Emerl is an extremely powerful machine and one of the more powerful entities in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The fact that ancient stone tablets refer to him as a deity at full power speaks volumes of his true strength. Capable of seemingly endless growth, Emerl's power does not possess a known limit. Near the end of his life, Emerl's power had grown to astronomical height; not only did he possess unlimited power and energy via the seven Chaos Emeralds, but also such vast combat and weapon data from 4,000 years ago that it could make even highly advanced computers crash, along with the training of Sonic and several of his most powerful friends. These skills together made Emerl powerful enough to fight and defeat both Sonic and Shadow at the same time. Gerald Robotnik even theorized that at this level of strength, Emerl could destroy the whole world single-handedly. Taking this even further before his death, Emerl would gain the energy displayed by the Final Egg Blaster, a weapon capable of destroying entire clusters of stars.
Emerl's principal and most recognized skill was his ability to copy any techniques of those he participates in combat with either by observation, or by being attacked by attack techniques. This apparently extended to all aspects of a target outside of its physical form, be it either movement patterns, powers and abilities, such as super speed, chaos powers, super strength, flight, etc., or even coloration. This allowed Emerl to for example adopt Sonic's speed for running and Knuckles' strength for punches. In addition, Emerl was capable of absorbing and copying any form of weapon technology and then manifest them at will, such as Amy's Piko Piko Hammer for the Girl Crush technique, making him a shapeshifting weapon arsenal. Even when he is not physically capable of performing a technique, such as Tails' ability to fly with his twin-tails or Chaos' malleable strikes, he could mimic them in another way; in Tails' case, he spun his arms around his body like a helicopter to mimic Tails' twin-tails and in Chaos' case, he extended his arms outward with cable-like cords to mimic Chaos' malleable limbs. Emerl was likewise able to develop new moves based on the data of the skills he copied, which were highly powerful and extra varied. His overall copying skill basically allowed Emerl to grow stronger for each battle he participated in. The process that Emerl used to gain skill and weapons had no known limitation and would "continue to loop indefinitely". These traits not only gave Emerl endless data storage space, but also made his combat potential, and the overall number of skills and weapons he could obtain, unlimited. While he did had a limit to how many skills he could put to use at once, this limit was seemingly circumvented when he overloaded with power.
Emerl was also able to absorb Chaos Emeralds and harness their chaos energy to empower himself. In fact, his power and skills increased for each Chaos Emerald he obtained. He would later also develop the ability to detect sources of emerald-based chaos energy sources, much like an Emerald Detector.
Although he had unlimited data storage space, Emerl's systems had a limit to how much power they could contain. As such, he was prone to overloading when he absorbed too many abilities or when capturing too much energy at once. In this state, Emerl himself would become highly unstable and revert to his innate destructive programming, causing him to go on a complete rampage and losing all self-control, which in turn would activate his self-destruct program.
The E-121 Phi was a mass-produced E-Series copy of Emerl, made by Dr. Eggman. Like Emerl, the Phis could copy fighting moves, but only the skillset of one person, and were powered by Chaos Emerald shards. Fourteen Phis were produced, all of which were destroyed by Emerl and his allies to get their Emerald Shards. They only appeared in Sonic Battle.
G-merl is a robot built by Dr. Eggman from Emerl's data. This robot was designed to be the ultimate combat robot. While G-merl does not possess Emerl's vast moveset, he possesses skills like flight, enhanced durability, teleportation, missile deployment, force-field generation, and the ability to "merge" with Eggman's machinery. Originally loyal to Eggman, G-merl eventually betrayed him and went on a rampage until he was defeated. Afterward, G-merl was recovered, reprogrammed by Tails, and became a part of Cream's family. He first appeared in Sonic Advance 3.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog was what could be described as Emerl's guardian. When they first met, Emerl recognized Sonic's power, causing him to establish a Link with him. As his programming dictated, Emerl subsequently swore loyalty toward Sonic, which made him refuse to leave his side. Early on, Emerl would obey Sonic's every command and ignore everyone else's. As such, their relationship, from Emerl's perspective, was that of a master and his servant. As time passed and Emerl evolved though, Emerl's relationship with Sonic became more and more one of friendship and caring. Early on during his upbringing, Emerl would in particular miss Sonic when apart from him, even when ordered by him to obey someone else, and show excitement when reunited with him. Like a child, Emerl would during his development also call for Sonic when he felt upset or scared, like a child calling for their parent for comfort and safety.
Like his other friends, Emerl would mimic Sonic's behavior and personality as he developed. Even so, Sonic was a particularly strong influence on Emerl. While the other character traits he learned from his friends faded and became less prominent as he grew, what he mimicked from Sonic would presist, even at the end of his upbringing. These traits would go on to form a large part of Emerl's conclusive personality. When he later became a fully independent individual, Emerl expressed gratefulness towards Sonic for having taken care of him. Later, when he was about to die onboard the Death Egg, Emerl thanked Sonic for all the fun they had and told him that he would miss him, showing just how much he meant to him.
Miles "Tails" Prower
Miles "Tails" Prower was another one of Emerl's closest friends. Emerl initially started out distant towards Tails since he had made a Link with Sonic and not him. However, he started listening to Tails after Sonic told him to. Although Tails was a little weary of Emerl in the beginning, he still saw him as his friend and would therefore try to protect him.
Like his other friends, Emerl would mimic Tails's behavior and personality as he developed. Emerl would in particular emulate Tails' politeness. When he later became a fully independent individual, Emerl expressed gratefulness towards Tails for having taken care of him and happiness over having gotten to know him. Later, when he was about to die onboard the Death Egg, Emerl told Tails that he would miss him and recognized his efforts to get stronger as attempts to better protect him, showing just how much he meant to him and how much he understood how important he was to him.
Rouge the Bat
Rouge the Bat was someone Emerl came to regard as a friend even though she initially only wanted his power for herself. Like many others, Emerl was originally distant towards Rouge due to the Link he had established with Sonic and not her. However, he started listening to Rouge after she tricked Sonic into making him obey her. As Rouge later began training him to become the ultimate jewel thief robot, Emerl would half-heartedly follow her orders, mostly because he missed his other friends. Emerl would later unintentionally betray Rouge by absorbing a Chaos Emerald they stole together. Soon after, when Emerl's desire for "fun" got in the way of a fight, she decided that Emerl was not worth the trouble and returned him to Sonic.
Despite her treatment of him, Emerl did not seem to hold a grudge at Rouge. When they met again after parting ways, Emerl casually greeted her, though his manner of speaking (which he had picked up from Knuckles) bothered her. In addition, while on his own later on, Emerl sought out Rouge, possibly because he missed her, which would imply that he had come to care for her. However, Emerl would act rudely towards her at that point in time due to Knuckles' influence. During their subsequent encounters though, after having his manners straighten out, Emerl would beave much more politely towards Rouge. Noticeably, he once referred to her as "Mama Rouge" on his own as a salutation after she had helped him on a few occasions, indicating that he may had come to consider her family. When he later became a fully independent individual, Emerl expressed gratefulness towards Rouge for having taken care of him and helping him achieve his independence, and later happiness over having gotten to know her.
Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles the Echidna was another one of Emerl's good friends, and his eventual battle partner. Their first meeting was less than stella though, with Knuckles attacking Emerl after mistaking him for a E-121 Phi, and only calming down after Emerl beat him, much to Knuckles' frustration. Furthermore, because Emerl had established a Link with Sonic and not Knuckles, Emerl would often ignore Knuckles early on (sometimes upon Sonic's instruction), and when not doing that, he would repeat what Knuckles would say, albeit in a manner that would provoke Knuckles' rage.
Despite these rough encounters, Emerl maintained a positive outlook on Knuckles. Noticeably, when Knuckles returned to train him, Emerl showed interest in learning from him. Even so, when they teamed up, Emerl would, due the traits he had borrowed from Sonic, take charge and hurry on ahead of Knuckles. While they were together, Emerl would be strongly influenced by Knuckles, namely by copying his passion for combat. Unfortunately, he also picked up Knuckles' uncourtly way of speaking, which would land Knuckles in hot water with some of his friends and allies, and make him take a hard look at himself. Furthermore, Emerl would prove rather fearful of Knuckles' anger; when his behavior got on Knuckles's nerves and made him yell at him, Emerl would get scared and call out for Sonic for comfort. Nonetheless, Emerl did not seem to hold this against Knuckles, as he was soon back to treating Knuckles as he always had. Eventually, Emerl and Knuckles ended up in good synch with each other, as Emerl emulated Knuckles more and more. However, Knuckles was ultimately not a positive influence on Emerl's manners and intellect. Regardless, Emerl would earn Knuckles' respect after beating the echidna while he did not hold back, and eventually earned his place as his battle partner. Even so, Emerl could not help but annoy Knuckles with his smugness and naivity at inconvenient times, like after winning his decisive battle with him, or when he was trapped in Dr. Eggman's "spiky rodent trap", or when he revealed Knuckles' latest blunder to Sonic despite promising to keep it a secret.
When he later became a fully independent individual, Emerl expressed gratefulness towards Knuckles for having taken care of him and happiness over having gotten to know him. Later, when he was about to die onboard the Death Egg, Emerl told Knuckles that he would miss him and asked Sonic to go easy on him since he was such a good guy despite being as gullible he is, showing that he recognized Knuckles as a good person despite his rough edges.
Amy Rose was another one of Emerl's guardians, and his self-proclaimed mother. When they first met, Emerl was quick to listen to Amy (although that was presumably because he had been ordered by Sonic to listen to her shortly before he met her) and quickly accepted her request to refer to her as his mother, which he would usually do after that. Although their first meeting was brief, Emerl quickly came to like her, as he would call out for her after Rouge took him away from her. When they later met again, Emerl would express joy over seeing her again. However, his limited vocabulary and manner of speech caused him to speak inappropriately to Amy. This would prompt Amy to scold Emerl severely. These lessons would stick with Emerl, causing him to get nervous and submissive towards Amy whenever she raised her voice at him. However, Amy's scolding also taught Emerl some much-needed manners.
While training with Amy, Emerl would recognize her as a strong individual. As Emerl continued to grow wiser, he would also start to notice Amy's crush on Sonic. Although he had trouble understanding why Amy would go to extreme lengths to get Sonic's attention, he could nonetheless recognize when Amy had the wrong idea about Sonic's behavior. When he later became a fully independent individual, Emerl expressed gratefulness towards Amy for having taken care of him and happiness over having gotten to know her. Later, when he was about to die onboard the Death Egg, Emerl told Amy that he would miss her, showing just how much he had come to care for her.
Cream the Rabbit
Cream the Rabbit was a close friend of Emerl who taught him about sadness and emotions. When they first met, Emerl would politely greet her, quickly establishing a good relation with her. Despite Cream's reluctance to fight, Emerl recognized her and Cheese as a strong team. As Emerl grew wiser and could better interact with Cream, Emerl would be taught about concepts like love by Cream, although Emerl did not always understand what she was trying to tell him. When they later got kidnapped by Dr. Eggman and worked to escape his base, Emerl found himself confused by Cream's reluctance to fight (or "play" as he would call it) Eggman's minions. In addition, Emerl ended up scarring Cream and making her cry from his violent behavior and callous treatment of his opponents. Due to having been taught what sadness was by Cream prior, Emerl learned from seeing Cream cry to feel sympathy for other beings. Having made Cream cry also made Emerl feel guilty about his behavior, which caused him to actively seek to protect Cream and not fight his opponents at all so that he would not see her "cute eyes" (as he put them) full of tears again, even when he got pummeled mercilessly by his opponents. After seeing Cream cry over letting himself get hurt though, Emerl seemingly found a middle ground when Cream agreed to fight by his side. These instances showed Emerl to be more considerate of Cream's feelings. He similarly took it upon himself to cheer her up, and would be happy when she laughed thanks to himself.
When he later became a fully independent individual, Emerl expressed gratefulness towards Cream for having taken care of him and happiness over having gotten to know her. Later, when he was about to die onboard the Death Egg, Emerl told Cream that he would miss her, showing just how much she had come to mean to him.
Shadow the Hedgehog
Shadow the Hedgehog and Emerl, despite having their differences, shared many key similarities. In addition to both of them being made as weapons of war, they also possessed the same "soul", with both of them having been programmed with a "soul" similar to Maria Robotnik's by Professor Gerald. Originally though, Emerl was targeted by Shadow for destruction, as Shadow refused to let Emerl pose a threat to the world should Emerl's true power awake. When they fought however, Emerl never seemed to be afraid of Shadow; in fact, he seemed excited about getting to "play" with him. Similarly, when Shadow decided to welcome him as a fellow weapon of war, Emerl thought it sounded fun to learn who he was from Eggman with Shadow's help after Sonic told him to do it. However, Shadow's grim view on their natures as weapons and the fate that awaited them would make Emerl sad, even when he did not understand what he was saying. Nonetheless, Shadow would prove to be the one who would grant Emerl his freedom from his past as a superweapon by willingly giving him the final Chaos Emerald and resetting his programming with Professor Gerald's keywords, something which Emerl was grateful for. After that, they developed some sort of rivalry, as Shadow wanted to know which one of them was the strongest, something which Emerl embraced with unwavering confidence. Despite this new dynamic though, Emerl was still grateful towards Shadow for having taken care of him and happy over having gotten to know him. Later, when he was about to die onboard the Death Egg, Emerl asked Shadow for answers to his existence, showing that he had come to rely on Shadow for answers about himself.
Chaos Gamma was one of Dr. Eggman's enforcers, who sought revenge on Emerl for having taken the power that Chaos Gamma believed rightfully belonged to him. As such, they would fight on numerous occasions. After their last hostile battle though, which left Gamma so broken that he could not move and got stuck in a loop, Emerl could not help but feel sympathy and sadness about Chaos Gamma's fate, showing that despite their hostile past, he could not bring himself to treat Chaos Gamma coldly. Fortunately, Chaos Gamma would soon after abandon his vendetta and become Emerl's sparring partner in preparation for his final battle with Eggman.
Dr. Eggman was the one who awoke Emerl in the present day, his intentions for doing so being to use his power to conquer the world. Despite this, Emerl ended up becoming Eggman's enemy, namely because Eggman failed to establish a Link with him, who ended up being raised benevolently by Sonic and his allies.
Although they were enemies, Emerl did not seem to take Eggman too seriously. When the time later came for Emerl to stop Eggman's scheme with the Final Egg Blaster, Emerl felt that he had a few things to settle with him since he was the one who had awoken him. At that time, Emerl had no fear of Eggman and looked forward to to putting an end to their struggle, as demonstrated when he confronted Eggman onboard the Death Egg. Although he later admitted that Eggman was "not cool" when he begged for forgiveness upon his defeat, Emerl nevertheless showed him mercy and told Eggman that he was grateful towards him for awakening him, as that led to his meeting with Sonic and co. Tragically, Emerl's kindness allowed Eggman to set in motion the events that would lead to Emerl's destruction.

In other media
In the Sonic X anime series, Emerl was created by Gerald Robotnik and was activated by Bokkun to help him distract Sonic while Dr. Eggman broke out of prison. However, Emerl eventually joined Sonic and co,. becoming friends with Cream in particular. Emerl also participated in the Chaos Emerald Martial Arts Mash-Up for the red Chaos Emerald, which he won. However, the Chaos Emerald's power sent him on a rampage and he left a trail of destruction in Station Square. Despite the efforts of Sonic, Knuckles, Rouge, Tails and Amy, Emerl proved unstoppable. Finally though, Cream and Cheese defeated Emerl by working together. Overcome, Emerl fell into the ocean and exploded.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Emerl makes a small appearance. Like in the games, Emerl was discovered by Dr. Eggman, and befriended Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies, but was destroyed when he went a rampage. His data would then be used to make Gemerl, who defends Mobotropolis.
- In the Japanese version of Sonic Battle, all of Emerl's "spoken" text is written in katakana, a Japanese alphabet that is generally used for names and loanwords, instead of the ordinary hiragana; this is normally used for robot-speak in most forms of Japanese media.
- When Emerl gains the ability to speak in Sonic Battle, he addresses Sonic as "Metal", hinting that he has met (or at least heard of) Metal Sonic.
- Regardless of what skills Emerl has equipped in Sonic Battle, Emerl will perform the same blocking and healing animations, which are based on Sonic's respective skills.
- In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Emerl is considered one of the three strongest Gizoids, the others being Prefect Scylla and Prefect Charyb.

At first, I didn't think anything of it, but when I was experimenting on "Chaos Emeralds," it began to move. This suggests the possibility that even the ancient civilizations could harness the power of the "Chaos Emeralds." When I was researching various papers related to the "Chaos Emeralds" and this robot, I discovered that there was a possibility that this robot was something incredible. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but this robot may be the cause of the destruction of the Fourth Great Civilization. I'm not sure I believe it just yet, though."
- Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. Area/Level: Ending sequence (Rouge's Episode). "Prof. Gerald's Journal 3: I now understand why this being was named "Gizoid". In the ancient tongue, it means "everything." According to the stone tablet, if the Gizoid establishes a "Link" with someone, the Gizoid will swear loyalty to that person. Perhaps it still lacks "Chaos Emerald" energy, but it has been saying the word "Link" to me in broken tones. It went on to explain: "Show me your true strength, and I shall obey. I am all things, and all shall belong to me." So, as it suggested, I brought before it my collection of model guns, and fired them all. Then, suddenly, it said, "I shall follow your every command, and never leave your side." And since then, it refuses to listen to anyone but me. While it still is a fearsome weapon of destruction, while it remains under my control, at least it won't be used for evil. However, if someone with evil intention ever forms a "Link" with the Gizoid… I don't even want to think about what will happen. I must research how one can re-establish a "Link" with the Gizoid…"

"Prof. Gerald's Journal 2: I am no longer able to ignore the possibility that this robot did in fact destroy the Fourth Great Civilization. I have discovered a stone tablet that explains as much. According to the tablet, "When the figure falls from the heavens, and the Stone of the Gods is joined, all that exists will become one again." Though it is difficult to believe, this robot has been watching my movements, and mimicking all that I do. I was amazed by my scans of this being. Surprisingly, reams and reams of data scrolled and caused my most powerful computer to crash. More intriguing was that the data was all about melee combat and weapons of that age. Eventually, if this being is ever restored to its former state, it will put all that data to use, and recreate all the weaponry and combat abilities that it once had… And that's not all. If my guesses are correct, it will also have the ability to absorb modern weaponry as well. What have I done? I have uncovered a horrible weapon…"

It says, "When the Gizoid had learned all that it could, it became a god of wrath, and all was destroyed." The researchers somehow managed to subdue the Gizoid and sealed it away. Luckily, it only had one "Chaos Emerald" installed. If it were to have all 7 Emeralds installed, it might destroy the whole planet. The Gizoid is too much of a liability.
