Emerald Powers (エメラルドパワー Emerarudo Pawā?) are special abilities that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are a class of chaos powers which can be performed by tapping into the power of the Chaos Emeralds and the magical aura surrounding the Northstar Islands.[1]
Concept and creation[]
The idea of the Emerald Powers came from the development team wanting to introduce something unique to the gameplay in Sonic Superstars. Unlike in previous games, where the player would be awarded with a Super State upon collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds, the crew wanted to give them a smaller reward with every Emerald that would be collected. Inspiration on these Emerald Powers came from the Color Powers that were introduced in Sonic Colors.[2]
Overview[]
In Sonic Superstars, all five playable characters can use various Emerald Powers, each of which is tied to a specific Chaos Emerald. These maneuvers can be used in gameplay, and once activated remain active for a certain amount of time before being depleted of their Chaos Emerald energy. Taking damage while an emerald power is active, however, will instantly cancel it.
Depleted Emerald Powers will gradually replenish their energy, allowing them to be used again once fully charged. Additionally, activating or passing an already activated Star Post will instantly replenish all inactive Emerald Powers.
To activate an Emerald Power, the player must first open up the selection wheel with //////[W]/[S]. Then, the player can travel left and right on the wheel with with //////[W]/[S] respectively.
Alternatively, on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S, the player can open up the selection wheel with , and use the stick to select the power they want.
Once the player has the Emerald Power they want selected, they can press ///[E] to activate it. If the player doesn't use the selected Emerald Power, it will automatically de-select after a set amount of time.
At certain sections of stages where an Emerald Power is suggested or required, the game will automatically select the associated power, if the player has it unlocked.
The Emerald Powers that appear in the game are as follows:
Power | Chaos Emerald(s) | Summary |
---|---|---|
Avatar |
Allows the player to generate clones of themselves that run across the screen to damage enemies and collect items. | |
Bullet |
Turns the playable character into a fireball that can be launched repeatedly in any direction. | |
Vision |
Allows the player to see and interact with hidden items and platforms. | |
Water |
Liquefies the playable character, allowing them to climb waterfalls and swim around in larger bodies of water with no fear of drowning. It also keeps the user safe from being crushed. | |
Ivy |
Allows the player to grow a climbable vine to reach new, higher up areas. The player can control the horizontal direction the vine leans in. | |
Slow |
Slows time down, causing enemies, bosses, and moving objects to move slower, while the player remains at normal speed. | |
Extra |
Gives the player a new move depending on the character they are playing as. Sonic gains the Homing Attack, Tails gets the Tornado Spin, Knuckles gets a Punch that can throw out a projectile, Amy gets her Hammer Throw from Sonic Origins Plus, and Trip gets Fire Breath. | |
Super |
Allows the player to use super transformation: Super Sonic for Sonic Super Powers for Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Dragon Form for Trip. |
Trivia[]
- Many of the Emerald Powers have several aspects in common with elements from earlier games in the series. For example, the Bullet works similarly to the Red Burst that debuted in Sonic Colors (DS), while Vision is similar to the Sunglasses and the Treasure Scope from Sonic Adventure 2, Water bears some functional resemblance to Yellow Drill underwater from Sonic Colors, and Slow resembles the same move from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Time Break from Sonic and the Secret Rings, or even Chaos Control.
- Additionally, the fact that the Extra Emerald Power, which is provided by the white Chaos Emerald, grants Sonic the Homing Attack, mirrors how the White Gem grants Sonic a more powerful version of the Homing Attack in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
