An Electric Generator in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991).

Electric Generators first appeared in Scrap Brain Zone Acts 1 and 2 in Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive, among many other dangerous traps designed to kill Sonic. Here, Electric Generators are small metal bars with a plasma sphere that shoots energy.

Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)

In Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Master System and the Sega Game Gear, the generators appear in the Scrap Brain Zone as in the 16-bit version of the game. They look the same as their Mega Drive version, except that now the spheres are totally yellow.

Gene 2

Electric Generators in Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Electric Generators reappear. They appear in Wacky Workbench, although they fire one power line at a time. To avoid them, Sonic must hang on a pole and pass over them. Here, they are small electric cubes (whose color varies depending on the time). In the Good Future, they are temporarily disabled at times.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

In Sonic & Knuckles, and its expansion Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, the generators appear in Death Egg Zone as long panels of electricity on the floor or ceiling. The ceiling ones shoot out lightning bolts periodically and can even harm Sonic through a lightning shield for some reason.
