Hello, Sonic and all you simpering tagalongs! At last, I can properly introduce you to my latest creation. This is my city of tomorrow, a self-replicating, self-repairing metropolis unlike anything the world has ever seen. Go ahead, try to destroy it! For every building you level, a dozen more will rise to take its place!

Dr. Eggman, Sonic the Hedgehog #59

Eggperial City is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing.. It was Dr. Eggman's latest capital city of the Eggman Empire, built after the Metal Virus pandemic.[1] After growing unhindered for some time, Dr. Starline briefly conquered it as part of Operation: Remaster.[2] Even though Eggman managed to retake control, resulting in Starline’s death, but the platypus had already betrayed the city's existence to the world when he lured Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, and Belle the Tinkerer to it, eventually leading to its destruction by the Restoration and their allies.[3][4]

Description[]

IDW-Eggtropolis

Eggperial City, from Sonic the Hedgehog #49.

Eggperial City is a massive city located in the middle of an open field inside a large forest area. It is a huge maze of buildings, tunnels, and winding roads and alleys. Badniks and other Eggman robots guard every city block, with each of them interconnected via the Eggnet. The city is self-building and self-repairing; taking its resources from the ground below via strip mining. This has caused the local environment to be devastated. Sonic theorized the city was designed to grow exponentially until it covers the entire world.[5] The city is powered by Giant Fake Chaos Emeralds that protrude out of the ground. The emeralds litter the landscape and are all connected to the central tower of the city.[6]

Curiously, the field it is situated in is divided into a geometric grid. Furthermore, Eggperial City is shaped like a giant hexagon, with a black outer wall surrounding the city on its edges. In addition, the city itself is divided into six equally sized sectors by six tall and segmented gray walls extending from the corners of Eggperial City and into the center of the city. Each of these sectors are colored differently in the following colors: red, turquoise, blue, yellow, purple and green. The insides of the city resemble as well a printed circuit board when viewed from above: there are purple roads extending outside and inside Eggperial City that are shaped likes signal traces, massive tubes resembling copper wires, and buildings and complexes resembling electronic components. Furthermore, there are various cone-shaped towers, most of which are colored in accordance to the sectors they are located in. Lastly, in the center of Eggperial City is a massive gray tower with a thick stem and a wide dome-shaped cap with four prongs and a red Eggman Empire decal painted on it. Extending from the top of it is an elaborate antennae.[7]

The central tower Eggperial City contains the city's headquarters. This room houses a throne with the logo of the Eggman Empire. It also has an escape chute leading to the Memorial Garage, where Eggman keeps his old mech machines while he is working on refurbishing them.[2] The central tower also has an emergency protocol where it can become mobile.[8]

History[]

Past[]

Following the end of the Metal Virus plague, Dr. Eggman focused on rebuilding his empire, which led to the creation of Eggperial City.[1]

Imposter Syndrome and Trial by Fire[]

IS4Pre3

Dr. Starline, Surge and Kit invading Eggperial City, from Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #4.

Eventually, Dr. Starline, Surge and Kit invaded Eggperial City. As the local Badniks tried defending the city from the invaders, Orbot and Cubot returned to Dr. Eggman after taking a leave of absence for a while. Eventually catching the duo sneaking into his headquarters, Eggman took no interest in where they had been and ordered them to monitor Surge and Kit, who were wreaking havoc around Eggperial City. Eggman eventually sent Metal Sonic after the duo, but Surge and Kit managed to defeat the robot. Eggman then detected Starline's presence in his server room. There, Starline uploaded an override program that gave him control of all the Badniks in the world. As his own robots tried to apprehend him however, Eggman escaped through a chute to his Memorial Garage, where he chose one of his old machines to launch a counterattack with. Meanwhile, Starline was led to Eggperial City's headquarters, where he took Eggman's throne and ordered his signal to be broadcast all over Eggnet in order to assemble all the world's Badniks in Eggperial City, which he knew would lure Sonic to the city. Meanwhile, Surge and Kit plotted to betray Starline by exterminating not only Sonic and Tails, but also Starline, Eggman, all of their allies, and everything that both the villains and heroes stood for.[2]

Following the converging Badniks, Sonic, Tails, and Belle soon discovered Eggperial City, which they eventually headed towards at super speed with Sonic's aid to investigate.[7]

Battle for the Empire[]

Eggman got into the Egg Emperor and attacked Starline, leading the platypus to take the Super Eggrobo from the armory for himself. At the same time, Surge was fighting Sonic whilw Kit did so with Tails. Both heroes tried to talk their way out of the fight, with Tails being more successful. Belle was separated from them and stumbled onto Metal Sonic, who she repaired and had him lead her to where Eggman was. Starline was able to destroy the Egg Emperor with a tricore blast, but Eggman had planned for this and was able to take down Starline with his own hands. After that, Belle found Eggman and said goodbye to him, finally accepting the cessation of his amnesiac persona, Mr. Tinker. She then refused an offer to join the Eggman Empire and they left the tunnel they were in as it started to collapse. Starline, mentally broken, remained and was buried in the rubble. Tails managed to get Kit to run out of water and turned off his hydro pack. Surge fell into a pit after refusing Sonic's help, with Sonic assuming she died. However, she survived the fall and swore to fight Sonic again. Sonic, Belle, and Tails regrouped and updated each other to what happened. Before Tails could get Kit back awake, Eggman announced to them his city wasn't ready for them, but he was going to send his entire Badnik Horde at them.[3]

Sonic was able to get everyone to hide from the Badniks and they devised a plan to escape the city. Sonic distracted Eggman while Tails and Belle got to a shuttle. Eggman quickly deciphered Sonic’s attempt at baiting him and sent Metal to track down the others while he led Sonic on. Eggman destroyed one of the buildings in the city, but it didn't take out Sonic. Tails managed to hijack a shuttle and flew it near Sonic, who got onto it. Metal Sonic then brought the ship down with a V. Maximum Overdrive Attack and it crashed into the city.[9]

Overpowered[]

Sonic was injured in the crash and Tails flew them away as Metal Sonic attacked them. The group managed to slow Metal down and got into a building, where Kit woke up. Sonic convinced Kit to fight Metal Sonic and he buried him under some rubble. Meanwhile, Surge found Starline's glove in the trash she was trying to get out of. She assumed he was dead and climbed up a trash cute to escape. It led her into a storage room where Cubot was. She grabbed Cubot and started looking for something to use. There she found the Dynamo Cage. She put it on after Cubot explained its abilities to her. Charging it up caused an explosion.[10]

At the same time, Sonic and friends managed to reach the outskirts of the city, but Metal came back before Sonic and Belle could leave. Belle managed to stop Metal for a moment, but the robot copy pushed her aside. Before he could fight Sonic, the loud explosion came from the city. Metal, at Sonic’s logic, left them to ensure Eggman’s safety and Sonic and his friends left the city.

Surge came out to face an investigating Eggman, who was unfazed and ordered his Egg Pawns to take her out but leave the device intact. The Dynamo Cage made their energy attacks useless and Surge destroyed the robots. She threatened Eggman before leaving to fight Sonic again.[11] Eggman would repair Metal Sonic and then go after Surge to recover his Dynamo Cage as well as get ahold of the tenrec.

Urban Warfare[]

Eggman would return to Eggperial City with Metal Sonic, failing to recover his Dynamo Cage or claim Surge. Not long after, Sonic and the Diamond Cutters infiltrated the city to investigate it. They observed the areas of the city that were damaged last time and found them to be repaired. Sonic also noticed the city had grown, but Tangle noted there wasn't any construction equipment. The group decided to go into the tunnel system under the city to investigate. Once they reached the bottom, they discovered the ground bellow the city was completely stripped mined. Sonic concluded Eggman was going to grow his city until it covered the entire planet and they needed to stop it immediately. A Spatial-Displacement Trap the appeared and chased after the group. Sonic managed to get out of the tunnels while the Diamond Cutters fought Badniks. However, Sonic lost his hold onto them and the Diamond Cutters fell into the trap. At this point, Sonic realized this was too much to handle for him and called Jewel for backup.[5]

Backup would arrive with Tails, Amy, Silver, and Blaze helping Sonic fight Badniks. They figured they needed to stop the city themselves and cleared the way for Tails to investigate one of the giant crystals in the city. The group fought off Badniks as Tails hooked his Miles Electric to the city's network. Once they got a break in the fighting, Tails explained the crystals were actually Giant Fake Chaos Emeralds. Sonic suggested destroying them, but Tails said no as they would explode the city block and themselves if they did. Tails further explained they were all connected to the main tower. If they took out the tower, they would take out the whole city. They could also free the Diamond Cutters via the computer in the main tower. As the group began to leave for the tower, they saw a large explosion and Sonic and Tails discovered Team Dark was attacking the city.[6]

Rouge explained they were there to destroy the city, but after some pushing by Amy, they were also there to loot anything they find. Tails and Silver asked for them to team up with the rest of the heroes, but Rouge and Omega declined. Just then, Eggman "welcomed" the invaders to the city over the PA system and unleashed a horde of Shadow Androids to destroy them. He watched their fight from the main tower with Orbot and Cubot. Everyone was having difficulty fighting them, and the heroes went to Team Dark to fight with them. As Omega was taken down by the androids, Rouge asked Shadow to use Chaos Control against them, with Tails saying he could use the Fake Emeralds in the city. Shadow reluctantly agreed and easily disposed the majority of the androids. Shadow then said the power was too much and released a large surge of Chaos Energy, which caused more Fake Emeralds to grow out of the city. They were forced to leave Shadow and Omega behind and went to safety elsewhere in the city.

As all of this was happening, the Diamond Cutters managed to get into the control room where Eggman was. They were partially displaced from reality and couldn't be seen or interact with the regular world. With Shadow overloading the systems of the city, Eggman had to shut down and restart the power system. Lanolin theorized if they could stop Eggman from restarting the systems, they could destroy the city with another energy surge. The restarting of the system, however, caused them to be visible again and they were spotted by Eggman. The doctor then used an upgraded version of his Spatial-Displacement Trap to trap Whisper and Lanolin, but Tangle escaped after her body phased through the window of the control room.[12]

With her body still partially displaced, Tangle survived the fall and was followed by Metal Sonic. She joined up with the rest of the heroes, but Metal followed her with more traps. The group managed to hold off Metal and destroy the traps. They then devised a plan: Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Tangle would go into the main tower to overload the power and free Lanolin and Whisper, while Rouge, Blaze, and Silver went to get Shadow and Omega. The later group found Omega to be alright, but Shadow was trapped in some fake Emeralds and guarded by several Shadow Androids in the Memorial Garage. Omega cleared the way for the trio to get to Shadow, but only Silver could remove the emeralds as it was too powerful for Rouge and Blaze. Meanwhile, the second group was on an elevator to the tower when Metal Sonic cut the cable. Tails got them before they fell, but Metal went after Sonic and Tangle wrapped her tail around Metal so Sonic could escape. The heroes made it up to the control room where they fought off Metal Sonic and Dr. Eggman to get to the main computer. Tails managed to remove the safeguards to the system as Eggman got his hands on him. The emeralds started to grow out of control and tear apart the city. Dr. Eggman then pressed a button on his jacket that made the main tower of the city mobile.[8]

Eggman managed to get Sonic into a Spatial-Displacement Trap and holds Tangle at gunpoint as Metal Sonic handles Amy and Tails. However, Lanolin and Whisper appear and take Eggman out of situation. Tails says he managed to disable the traps, explaining how they escaped. Metal then goes to attack them, but since the traps are disabled, Sonic is free and attacks Metal, kicking him out of the tower. The Diamond Cutters escape and Sonic, finally fed up with everything Eggman has done, tells his nemesis he is going to destroy the city before he leaves. Meanwhile, Shadow broke free from the Fake Emeralds thanks to Silver's help and manages to control them, creating a big tower of Fake Emeralds. The other heroes see this and go over to the tower, but Metal Sonic manages to snatch Sonic while riding a Turtloid. Omega and Blaze fire at Metal and Sonic kicks his robot copy into the cross fire. Rouge brings him to safety as the others reach the tower.

Eggman fires upon the Fake Emerald tower from his main tower. Shadow then uses Chaos Control to move the Fake Emeralds to trap the mobile tower. With help from almost everyone, Sonic flings up over the tower and dives into it, destroying it. Without the control tower, the Emeralds have nothing to divert their power. Silver protects as many as he can as the city is about to blow up. Shadow then uses Chaos Control to teleport all the Emeralds into the sky before they explode. Shadow returns and he and the others look at the sky as the Emeralds explode over the ruins of the city.[4]
