It's a trap. It will damage you.

— Description, Sonic Mania English manual

The Eggman Mark[1] (エッグマントラップ[2] Egguman Torappu?, lit. "Eggman Trap"), also known as Robotnik,[3] is a recurring Item Box power-up in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. When obtained, it damages the player.

Description

The Eggman Mark is known to have the smiling face of Dr. Eggman on its monitor's screen. When breaking its monitor, it will cause the player to take damage, resulting in the loss of either a shield, Rings or even a life, should the player not have any Rings on them at the time. However, it does not have any effect if the player is invincible or in a Super State.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog

In the original Sonic the Hedgehog, this power-up does not appear in gameplay. However, its icon exists within the game's Video Monitor graphic files and the item itself can be placed in the game via hacking. However, nothing will happen when the player opens this Video Monitor. In the 2013 version of the game however, the player can place this power-up in one place using Debug Mode. In this version, it functions like the typical Eggman Mark in its other appearances.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

RobotnikStH216Bit

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Eggman Mark made its first official appearance. In this game, it is referred to as Eggman Mark (エッグマンマーク[4] Egguman Māku?) in the Japanese manual. However, it is unnamed in English manuals.

In gameplay, Eggman Mark only appears in the 2 Player VS mode. During gameplay in this mode, this monitor can only be obtained from monitors carrying the question mark.

In the 2013 version, they can be placed with Debug Mode.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and its add-on continuation Sonic & Knuckles, this power-up referred to as Robotnik[3][5] in international manuals. In this game, the Robotnik monitors appear in the main game.

In these games, Robotnik monitors are more rare, but are set in inconsistent places. The first Robotnik monitor can be found in an underwater section of Hydrocity Zone Act 2 in a corner on top of a bed of spikes. The next two Robotnik monitors can be found in a cavern of IceCap Zone Act 2 (where their monitors are frozen in ice blocks), just before the player leaves the cavern by trampolines. Another three Robotnik monitors are found in Launch Base Zone Act 2, where two are set at the foot of a tunnel and a single one in a corner with a Super Ring monitor, where the player pops out the water pipe. These three Robotnik monitors only appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and are replaced with two Super Rings and an Invincibility when playing this Act in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.

In the Zones associated with Sonic & Knuckles, the next Robotnik monitor is found in Mushroom Hill Zone, which is right next to a Super Ring monitor, which hides a Spring beneath it. The next two are found in the second act of Lava Reef Zone, where they are set at the foot of a blocked, hidden entrance, which are placed near the main path. The last one can be found in Death Egg Zone Act 2, which is placed near an anti-gravity switch and right next to a Super Ring monitor.

Sonic Blast

EggmanTVBlast

In Sonic Blast, this power-up referred to as Eggman[6] (エッグマン?) in the Japanese manual. However, it is unnamed in the western manuals. Also, while the Eggman can be obtained from its standard TVs, the player can also obtain it from ??? TVs at times.

In this game, the Eggman monitors act much different, as the player simply does not earn anything by breaking their TVs.

Sonic Mania

The Eggman Mark Returns!

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, this power-up referred to as Eggman Mark[1] (エッグマントラップ[2] Egguman Torappu?, lit. "Eggman Trap") for the first time. In this game, it functions just like it did in the 16-bit titles and can be found in sporadic locations throughout Mania Mode and Encore Mode.

Trivia

  • Eggman Marks should not to be confused with extra lives that Dr. Eggman earns in Sonic Adventure 2. These items are also represented by Eggman's head showing on the icon.
