Egg Tarantula

The Egg Tarantula was a battle vehicle made by Doctor Eggman. Its construction began shortly after the destruction of the third Metal Sonic and Metal Scourge.

The Egg Tarantula is a giant robotic spider. An Egg Mobile-like-base is located on its head. It is mostly scarlet with some dark-red on the torso. A star-mark is located on the top of the torso, too. The legs are colored red with gray and black in the joints of the legs. Its eyes are green, it has red and yellow fangs, and has two yellow stripes on its head.

Eggman used it to defend himself against Sonic the Hedgehog after he, the Knothole Freedom Fighters and Chaotix, stormed his base in order to defeat the Eggman Empire once and for all. Its abilities included wall-climbing, a grappling hook, a laser in its abdomen, blades on the tips of the spider legs, and a high level of agility. It wasn't enough to stop Sonic, who smashed the mech with relative ease while taunting Eggman's selfish desires. This was the last straw for Dr. Eggman, as he snapped and went completely insane following this defeat. (StH: #192, #194, #199, #200)

Egg Tarantula Original Colors

A early preview of the Egg Tarantula, with a red and golden color scheme, from Sonic the Hedgehog Free Comic Book Day 2009.

  • In an early preview panel for Sonic the Hedgehog #200 shown in Sonic the Hedgehog Free Comic Book Day 2009, Sonic is fighting the Egg Tarantula, but the robot mecha is colored in a red and golden color scheme instead of its black, red, and gold color scheme. Whether this is an early design or a coloring error is unknown.
  • While the Egg Tarantula was never called as such in the comic, writer Ian Flynn confirmed the name of the battle mech on his message board.[1]
