These strange looking springs are decoys! They'll send you off in a wrong direction, so watch out!

Omochao, Sonic Generations (console/PC)

Egg Spring[1][2] (ニセモノのスプリング[3] Nisemono no supuringu?, lit. "Fake Spring"), also known as Spring Egg[4] or Trap Spring,[5] is an obstacle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a variant of the Springs that serve as traps to either break the player's momentum or knock them off course.

Description[]

Egg Springs are fake Springs[6][7] created by Dr. Eggman.[1] They have an angular square shape with the Eggman Empire decal plastered on their panels. Hitting an Egg Spring will make small sparkling effect as well providing a high-pitched laugh to provoke its user.

Found in different types of Stages, Egg Springs are placed on walls, ceilings, and corners much like regular Springs, but their placement is also unexpected for purpose, as usually being set in dangerous sections of the Stage. Hitting an Egg Spring will bump its user into opposite direction for a short distance, usually towards enemies, Spikes or bottomless pits.[6][8]

Game appearances[]

Sonic Unleashed[]

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, Egg Springs are uncommon obstacles found in the majority of daytime Stages. In terms of appearance, they resemble simple red pads with black and white Eggman Empire decal on them.

In gameplay, Egg Springs are found placed in most unexpected sections of daytime Stages. Either they are found on walls, ceilings and corners of level terrains or the most critical points of the Act, usually surrounded by dangerous obstacles or bottomless pits. The player has to avoid coming in contact with Egg Springs; Sonic can target his Homing Attack into one much like regular Springs when he is in mid-air. When the player hits the Egg Spring, Sonic will be bounced straight into opposite direction without being able to control the mid-air momentum temporarily. In some cases with dangerous sections of the Stage, doing this would usually result the player getting hit by obstacles and enemies or falling into bottomless pits.

Sonic Colors[]

In the Wii version of Sonic Colors and Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Egg Springs are very rare obstacles that are only featured in Sweet Mountain Act 1, Game Land 4 Act 1 and Game Land 7 Act 1. They also received different cosmetic appearance, as it has yellow and black striping around and red center with newly designed Eggman Empire logo on it. Much like in Sonic Unleashed, Egg Springs are placed on corners of level terrains in tricky sections of the Stage along with other dangerous obstacles.

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, Egg Springs are present in Planet Wisp and a couple of Challenge Acts. In gameplay, they retain the same design and functionality from Sonic Colors. When using Pink Spikes as Classic Sonic, Egg Springs can also knock the player off the wall or ceiling when touching it. They are also found placed at end of Grind Rails in Planet Wisp Act 2, as they usually bounce Modern Sonic to another rail right next to them, but doing so will make the player momentarily lose the speed that Sonic has already gained.

Sonic at the Olympic Games (2020)[]

In Sonic at the Olympic Games (2020), Egg Springs are present during the EX Version of 400m Hurdles Event. Their appearance is closely the same as in previous games except the Eggman Empire decal is painted red instead of black. They are spread on groups around the race course as the player has to jump over them and land on Springs to leap over Egg Springs ahead. Otherwise, landing into Egg Spring will send the playable character to leap upwards and lose the momentum that the player has gained.

In the exclusive "Get to the top!" minigame at Shinjuku Rocket, there are exclusive floating Egg Springs with white propellers attached to them. They are spread as singular or in lines as the player has to avoid them, while flying upwards to reach to the top within the time limit.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, Egg Springs appear in both Open-Zone fields and Cyber Space stages, such as 4-5. In this game, they sport a new cyan and purple design, similarily to other gimmicks in the Open-Zone areas, while in Cyber Space, they use their design from older games. In gameplay, they act like in previous games.

Merchandise[]

In September 2020, a Trap Spring[5] accessory with a 4-inch articulated action figure of Metal Sonic was released by Jakks Pacific.
