The Egg Spear[1] (エッグスピア[2] Eggu Supia?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are spears used primarily by the Egg Pawns of the Eggman Empire.

Description

Appearance

Despite its name, the Egg Spears resemble the stereotypical lance more than a spear. They are quite long by comparison, easily over twice an Egg Pawn's height in length. Possessing a white and orange cone-shaped head with a sharp point, they each have a large and round orange vamplate and a thin orange and grey grip. Over time, the Egg Spears' vamplates have gotten thicker and their heads have received an orange tip.

Game appearances

Sonic Heroes

Knuckle punch

Egg Pawns and Solid Pawns with Egg Spears, from Sonic Heroes.

The Egg Spears first appeared in Sonic Heroes as one of the standard weapons wielded by several Egg Pawns, Solid Pawns and Egg Knights. In gameplay, the enemies attack the player with the Egg Spears by simply charging into the playable characters with them. Touching the Egg Spears, even when the enemies are standing idly by, will harm the player.

Shadow the Hedgehog

GUPE8P-247

Shadow wielding an Egg Spear, from Shadow the Hedgehog.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Egg Spear appears as a close-quarters, combat-type weapon usable by both enemies and the player. In gameplay, they are only found in certain Stages, such Sky Troops and Circus Park. They can be wielded by Egg Pawns, who will use them against the player.

Egg Spears can be dropped by defeated enemies that wield them or released from breakable Containers. Touching one will make the playable character pick it up automatically, and pressing SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO/Square/XboxX (whether on the ground or in mid-air) will make him attack with it. As a close-quarters combat weapon, the Egg Spear is designed for face-to-face combat. A Egg Spear can be attacked with a total of six times, and once those tries are spent, it becomes useless. However, it can be reloaded with another six attacks by picking up another Egg Spear.

Sonic Colors

In the Wii version of Sonic Colors, and the remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate, the Egg Spear received a slight update in design. In this game, it is a weapon used against the playable characters by certain Egg Pawns, who will use them for close-up thrusts instead of charging them into the playable characters like in Sonic Heroes. Unlike most other Egg Pawn weapons in this game, the Egg Spears can appear in multiple Areas, regardless of the level theme. There is also a different white and purple version of the Egg Spear in the game that is held by the Egg Pawns in Terminal Velocity .

Sonic Generations

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Egg Spear retains its design from Sonic Colors. Again, it is a weapon used by the Egg Pawns, this time exclusively by those in Seaside Hill Act 1 and 2. Like in Sonic Colors, the Egg Pawns used them for close-up thrusts when attacking the player. In Seaside Hill Act 1 in particular, the Egg Spears glow when they are attacked with.

The Fate of Dr. Eggman

When Sonic snuck onboard an Egg Fleet battlecruiser, he was found by Neo Metal Sonic, who had a number of Egg Paws with Egg Spears surround Sonic. Sonic, however, managed to disarm one of them and use its Egg Spear to spin around with it in hand, defeating the Egg Pawns surrounding him. He then threw it at a nearby artillery cannon and obliterated it.[4]

Battle for Angel Island

The Egg Spears would later be wielded by the Egg Pawns guarding Angel Island, although that did little to stop the Resistance and their allies when they came to liberate Angel Island.[5][6]

Bad Guys

Egg Pawns patrolling Egg Base Sigma with Egg Spears later discovered Dr. Starline intruding on the base. However, before they could use the Egg Spears on him, the doctor escaped.[7]
