The Egg Shogun Z[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. It is a massive mech created by Dr. Eggman for usage with its dedicated weapon, the Shining Yolk Blade.
Concept and creation[]
The idea for the Egg Shogun Z originated from writer Daniel Barnes, who, from the very start, wanted it to be a Mazinger-esque robot.[2] The robot's design was mainly handled by artist Min Ho Kim[1], and took inspiration from several fictional robots and mechs, including Tetsujin 28, Mazinger Z, RX-78-2 Gundam, Astro Boy, several robots from the Getter Robo franchise, Hyper Mega Man, E-123 Omega, the Super Egg Robot, the Super Eggrobo Z, the Death Egg Robot, the Eggrobo, and Metal Robotnik.[3][4][5][6][7]
Five potential designs for the mech were initially created by Min Ho Kim, with the fifth one being selected for further revision.[2] This design was edited in response to feedback from Mauro Fonseca, and would be finalized by Min Ho Kim.[2]
The name of the robot was inspired by both Mazinger Z, and the GoShogun anime series.[8]
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Egg Shogun Z is a towering humanoid mech loosely created in the image of Dr. Eggman. The mech's feet and ankles are covered by red metal plating, and are attached to the body by silver cylindrical legs. The structural body of the mech is colored silver, but is mostly covered by black plating featuring two yellow stripes running across it. Similar plating is featured on the robot's waist, along with a ring of blue lights. The back of the Egg Shogun Z features a gray device with slot for the Shining Yolk Blade to be stored in. The device is also connected to the mech's dodecahedronal neck guard, and features large crimson wing-like structures protruding from its left and right sides. The upper limbs of the mech are notably rounded, with large spherical black shoulders, cylindrical arms, and large curved yellow wrists with red fins hanging from them. The wrists feature black retractable hands, each with four fingers. The head of the mech notably features yellow eyes, and a constant toothy frown cut into a silver muzzle meant to resemble Dr. Eggman's mustache. The left and right sides of the head each feature a spike protruding from them, and the top side of the head is protected by a red shell, with a black mohawk-like structure on top. The mech's forehead also features a yellow V-shaped ornament, with a cyan crystal at its center.[9]
Features and abilities[]
The Egg Shogun Z both possesses great strength, which is uses to lift and slice with the Shining Yolk Blade, and is heavily armored, even being able to withstand accidental punches from itself with barely a dent. The mech can also perform "rocket punches" by detaching its fists and launching them at foes, and can retract its fist to fire barrages of missiles from its wrists.[9]
History[]
Sonic the Hedgehog's 900th Adventure[]
At some point, the Egg Shogun Z was created by Dr. Eggman, who decided to test out its abilities on an abandoned city. The test was interrupted, however, by the sudden arrival of the Warp Topaz through a portal, followed closely by Sonic the Hedgehog. Wishing to keep the gem for himself, the doctor attacked Sonic with the Egg Shogun Z, only for the hedgehog to dodge the strikes from both its firsts and its Shining Yolk Blade by escaping through portals. Eggman then had the Egg Shogun Z launch a barrage of missiles at Sonic, one of which the hedgehog jumped onto, steering it back towards the Egg Shogun Z. The missile impacted the Egg Shogun Z, exploding, and creating a diversion which allowed Sonic to escape, much to Eggman's fury.[9]
