The Egg Froster[1] (フリーザーモービル[2] Furīzā Mōbiru?, lit. "Freezer Mobile"), also known as Insta-Freeze,[3] Doctor Robotnik's Freeze-O-Matic,[4] or just Freeze-O-Matic for short,[4] is a vehicle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a floating machine with a snowblower created by Dr. Robotnik, who used it during the first part of the Angel Island incident.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Egg Froster is a floating vehicle that possesses extra armor and refrigeration tubes. There is an extensible tube below the machine that connects a small platform with spikes on the bottom and two snowblowers to the vehicle. The Egg Froster itself also features a snowblower right in front of its tube.

Features and abilities[]

The Egg Froster can fly. It is also equipped with snowblowers that it can use to freeze opponents. Another characteristic it has is that it can extend the tube it has below it.

History[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik used the Egg Froster for an attempt to defeat Sonic and Tails in IceCap Zone. However, his machine was destroyed by the heroes.

Some time later, a re-built Egg Froster would be piloted by an EggRobo, who used it for an attempt to eliminate Knuckles in IceCap Zone. However, the machine was destroyed by the echidna.

Battle[]

The Egg Froster is the boss of IceCap Zone Act 2 in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and the tenth boss overall in these games (or the ninth in Knuckles' story in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles). In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it is battled by Sonic and/or Tails, while in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, it can also be battled with Knuckles. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.

Boss guide[]

After arriving in the battle area, Dr. Robotnik will extend the tube with the platform and starts hovering back and forth in the arena. During the battle, the Egg Froster fires a cold blast in one of three directions: either left or right from the weapon extended out of the machine's bottom, or down from the bottom of the Egg Froster itself. For a short time after the fight begins, these blasts will occur in a regular pattern from left, then to center, then to right, and later to center, although they will later come in a random order. In some cases, Robotnik will even fire a cold blast downwards twice in succession. If the player gets hit by them, the playable character will be frozen similarly to the snowblowers throughout the zone. If Sonic and Tails are present, the other character can rescue a frozen character before he gets damaged by simply using a Spin Attack, Jump, or Dash into the frozen character.

After landing six hits on the Egg Froster, the tube of the Egg Froster will break up. Two more hits are required to defeat it, most easily done from the front. The only real threat to the player at this point is the icy gas leaking out of the back of the damaged Egg Froster, which still has the same effect as before. After two hits, Robotnik will fly away while the mobile is destroyed.

When playing as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, EggRobo will retract the platform just after firing the icy gas to the sides, making the jumps very hard to execute. Super Sonic can easily destroy the Egg Froster thanks to his increased jump height (and his invincibility), but when playing as Tails (who has no Super State normally available) the boss must be defeated in a more conventional way.
