The Egg Drillster Mark II[1] (ドリルモービル[2] Dorirumōbiru?, lit. "Drill Mobile"), also known as Doctor Robotnik's Jet Drill Pod,[3] or just Jet Drill for short,[3] is a vehicle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a big drill machine that was used by Dr. Robotnik during the first half of the Angel Island incident.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Egg Drillster Mk. II is Dr. Robotnik's Egg Mobile connected to an artifact with a hole in the front. This artifact is gray with orange bezels, and, where the Egg Mobile is attached, there are a series of dark orange warning lines. In the intermediate part, on the sides of the Egg Drillster Mk. II, there are two propellers connected to circles (also orange) that allow the user to turn them in order to gain momentum, be able to float, etc. The Eggrobo's Egg Drillster Mk. II is basically the same, except that its drill is missing.

Features and abilities[]

The Egg Drillster Mk. II's thrusters can be turned sideways. The drill can also be turned sideways, although Robotnik almost always keeps it facing the front. This drill is shown to be quite durable given that it can forcefully destroy almost anything in the Marble Garden Zone that comes close to it, and as if this were not enough, it can also cause devastating earthquakes that can greatly affect structures.

The Eggrobo's Egg Drillster Mk. II cannot cause earthquakes or destroy stone structures. To compensate for this, this Egg Drillster Mk. II model can launch almost endless strings of iron balls that act as lasers in battle.

Story[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik went with the Egg Drillster Mk. II to the Marble Garden Zone and smashed stone structures and caused strong earthquakes mercilessly trying to ambush Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower. However, the duo survived, and the doctor, unsurprised, escaped. While fleeing, Sonic and Tails prevented him from escaping and Robotnik lost the battle, and the heroes went to Carnival Night Zone.

Later, an Eggrobo rebuilt the Egg Drillster Mk. II, albeit with minor modifications. When Knuckles was in the Marble Garden Zone, he ambushed him in a dead end room. However, the echidna defeated the robot, and then escaped to Carnival Night Zone.

Battle[]

Egg Drillster Mk. II
Next boss >>

The Egg Drillster Mk. II is the boss of Marble Garden Zone Act 2 in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles and the sixth boss overall in these games. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Egg Drillster Mk. II is confronted by Sonic and/or Tails. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, it can also be fought with Knuckles. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.

Boss guide[]

Similarly to the Tunnelbot in Marble Garden Zone Act 1, Robotnik will make surprise appearances in the Egg Drillster Mk. II during the course of Marble Garden Zone Act 2.

The first time the Egg Drillster Mk. II appears is near the beginning of Act 2, inside a small temple. There, as the surroundings begin to shake, the Egg Drillster Mk. II (with Robotnik piloting it) will pop out of the ground in the right side of the hall. If the player damages the Egg Drillster Mk. II once or leaves it undisturbed for some time, Robotnik will begin drilling into the ceiling with the Egg Drillster Mk. II and the player will be able to continue on normally through the Zone. However, the player can still take damage from the Egg Drillster Mk. II should the playable character touch its drill or engine exhaust though taking damage from the latter source can be prevented if the character is equipped with a Flame Shield.

Robotnik[]

Robotnik controlling the Egg Drillster Mk. II will reappear later in the Act, inside another hall in a similar fashion to its first appearance, this time on the left. There, the doctor will cause the temple surroundings to crumble with the Egg Drillster Mk. II, and after the player hits the Egg Drillster Mk. II once, Robotnik will similarly start drilling into the ceiling and disappear again. However, the player must go through the following section of the Act before the crumbling ceiling collapses entirely and crushes the playable character.

Finally you made it happen!

Dr. Robotnik collapses the terrain below Sonic and Tails at the beginning of the battle.

At the end of Marble Garden Zone Act 2, the player faces Robotnik in his Egg Drillster Mk. II on a flat portion of ground. Here, Robotnik slowly descends from above Sonic/Tails and destroys the ground by smashing into it and causing it to collapse. The battle takes place in the midair, where the duo follow the Egg Drillster Mk. II through the air as Tails carries Sonic. The player can use D-pad to make Tails fly any direction indefinitely. After Robotnik has flown with the Egg Drillster Mk. II for some time, the doctor will fly off-screen. Depending on the side of the screen that Robotnik flies into as he moves into the background, he will reappear from the same side of the screen and move in an almost straight line to the opposite side, with the drill attachment aimed in the direction the Egg Drillster Mk. II is heading. As mentioned earlier, the player must avoid the drill and the engine exhaust below the mobile in order to avoid taking damage though the player can be protected from the latter if they have a Flame Shield equipped.

When the player decides to attack, Sonic can jump regularly by pressing the jump button to perform a Spin Jump into the Egg Drillster Mk. II. If the player misses and falls off-screen, it will not count as falling into a bottomless pit, and Tails will instead follow Sonic to catch him and pull him back up to the screen. If the player has Tails as the sole playable character, the battle is more challenging since Tails cannot jump in midair. The only way to damage the Egg Drillster Mk. II as Tails is to go below the Egg Drillster Mk. II and attack it with Tails' spinning tails while he is flying. After landing eight hits, the Egg Drillster Mk. II will be destroyed and Robotnik will escape. After opening a capsule in midair, the player will clear Marble Garden Zone.

EggRobo[]

Don't try hide from me

Knuckles' version of the Egg Drillster Mk. II fight in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles confronts the Egg Drillster Mk. II earlier in Marble Garden Zone Act 2, where it is piloted by EggRobo. However, during the Act, Knuckles is unable to reach the last Relief on the wall. As such, the player must climb up and go down a different pathway which is meant only for Knuckles.

After getting inside the temple, the player meets EggRobo in the Egg Drillster Mk. II again who then flies up through the ceiling, causing the place to crumble. Like in Sonic and/or Tails' version of the fight, the player must eventually go through the section with a collapsing ceiling. After this, the player will enter another temple, where they will fight EggRobo in the Egg Drillster Mk. II.

EggRobo's battle, while operating the Egg Drillster Mk. II, is different from the one that Robotnik did. In this battle, the Egg Drillster Mk. II will fire a chain of iron balls from one of four different locations (either from the ceiling or from the floor) which will then re-emerge from another location. Touching the iron balls will damage the player. The Egg Drillster Mk. II itself will then travel along this chain which removes the chain before repeating the process. The formations of the chains are different each time, with the player having to watch for where each chain will pop out. The Egg Drillster Mk. II can only be damaged once it comes out of the ceiling or the ground, although the player can take damage if they touch the drill or the engine exhaust of the Egg Drillster Mk. II. After hitting it eight times, the Egg Drillster Mk. II will be destroyed, and EggRobo will escape. After opening the capsule, the player will clear Marble Garden Zone Act 2.

Trivia[]

  • In Robotnik's fight, if the player moves below the collapsing pillar when he destroys the terrain, they will eventually get crushed by the pillar's upper part despite the pillar itself being unable to do so.
  • It is possible for Sonic and/or Tails to fight Knuckles' version of the boss and vice versa by using glitches or Debug Mode. When Knuckles enters Robotnik's battle, EggRobo is seen piloting the Egg Drillster Mk. II, while Tails flies and carries Knuckles in the mid-air normally.
  • In the original version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles' version of the Egg Drillster Mk. II fight has the Act 1 boss BGM playing in the background due to a programming oversight. This has been corrected in the 2022 remaster of the game in Sonic Origins, which now plays the proper Act 2 boss BGM when encountering this version of the boss.
