The Egg Drillster[1] (ドリルエッグマン[2] Doriru Egguman?, lit. "Drill Eggman"), also known as the Egg Mobile-D[3] (エッグモービル・ドリルマシン仕様[3] Eggumōbiru Dorirumashin-shiyō?, lit. "Egg Mobile Drill Machine-shiyou") and the Mecknocart,[4] is a vehicle from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a modified Egg Mobile created by Dr. Eggman, who first used it during the West Side Island incident.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Egg Drillster is a predominantly red and gray armored dune buggy-like vehicle that runs on four wheels. It has the Egg Mobile located in the middle, and a large drill at the front.
Features and abilities[]
The Egg Drillster's main feature include the large spinning drill at the front end of the machine. It is also capable of functioning as a long-ranged but somewhat slow projectile weapon, as it can be launched from the front end towards its target. The machine was capable of moving on autopilot when the main control capsule is not directly connected to it.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, its various ports and remasters, and the lock-on game Knuckles in Sonic 2, the Egg Drillster[1] (ドリルエッグマン[2] Doriru Egguman?, lit. "Drill Eggman") is the boss of Emerald Hill Zone Act 2, and the first boss overall in the game. It is also the first boss of Boss Attack Zone in the 2013 remaster of the game. In the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Egg Drillster is fought with Sonic and/or Tails, while in Knuckles in Sonic 2 and the 2013 remaster of the game, it can also be fought with Knuckles. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.
The boss fight in an arena with a slightly uneven terrain. At the beginning of the fight, Dr. Robotnik will arrive in his hovercraft and attach it to the Egg Drillster. He will then proceed to drive the Egg Drillster back and forth across the screen.
The Egg Drillster is vulnerable to a simple Spin Attack. After being hit seven times, Robotnik will shoot the drill-bit straight off the Egg Drillster. One final hit is required to destroy the machine, after which the doctor detaches his Egg Mobile from the vehicle and flies away. The player can then open the Capsule and complete the Zone.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from the Sonic Cafe mobile phone service, the Egg Drillster is slightly bulkier and has a little more armor, making the hitbox of vehicle smaller to attack.
Trivia[]
- In Sonic Jam compilation, the Egg Drillster is one of three bosses that the player will encounter in the Easy Mode of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 portion. While having an identical attack pattern, it only takes three hits to defeat it.

Sonic Jam (Game.com)[]
In Sonic Jam (Game.com), the Egg Drillster appears as one of the bosses in Emerald Hill Zone.
Sonic Advance[]
<< Previous boss | — | Sonic Advance Egg Drillster |
— | Next boss >> |
In Sonic Advance, the Egg Drillster appears as the second boss of X-Zone (as well as the eighth boss overall in the game).
While the battle is mostly the same, there are slight differences now. In the beginning of the fight, Eggman is already seen in the Egg Drillster when it arrives to the battle arena, which is now completely flat. This version takes only four hits to be destroyed, while like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it shoots its drill part towards the player after the third hit. After destroying the Egg Mobile-D completely, Eggman flees, allowing the player to progress further in the X-Zone.
The boss music used for it is a remix of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 boss theme.
Trivia[]
- This boss and the Egg Mobile-H are the only bosses in Sonic Advance whose required number of hits to defeat do not change when changing the game's Level.
Sonic Mania[]
In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, a mini version of the Egg Drillster appears as one of the many prizes the Gachapandora can drop. In gameplay, it will go back and forth across the arena. Each one of these "prizes" require three hits to be destroyed.
In other media[]
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by the Archie Comics, the Egg Drillster appears as a vehicle used by Dr. Eggman under the name Egg Driller. The doctor used the vehicle during a mission to recover his refinery alongside Axel the Water Buffalo.
Trivia[]
- A similar vehicle to the Egg Drillster was originally going to be Eggman's racing vehicle in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, as it is shown to be somewhat smaller in early concept art. In the finished product however, Eggman's racing car became the Egg Monster.
