The Egg Crusher[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a machine encompassing an entire room that Dr. Eggman used as his final weapon against Sonic the Hedgehog during the South Island incident.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Egg Crusher consists of an entire room in the Final Zone. This room has four large, silver-colored cylindrical pistons, each with space inside it for a pilot, built into the floor and ceiling of the Final Zone. It also has a large red bulb built into the right wall near the ceiling.
Features and abilities[]
In addition to being able to crush foes with its pistons, the Egg Crusher sports a red bulb, which can launch purple energy orbs that home in on targets slightly.
History[]
Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)[]
In Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit), Dr. Eggman used the Egg Crusher for a last attempt to defeat Sonic in Final Zone. However, his efforts were left in vain when the Egg Crusher was destroyed by Sonic instead, prompting the doctor to attempt fleeing in his Egg Mobile.
Battle[]
The Egg Crusher is the boss of Final Zone in the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and the sixth and final boss in the game overall. In the original version of the game, it is battled only by Sonic, while in the 2013 remaster of the game, it can also be battled with Tails or Knuckles. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.
Boss guide[]
When Sonic enters the Egg Crusher's chamber, Dr. Eggman attacks him by using four large engine pistons. These pistons are able to easily crush Sonic against the ceiling or floor, should he lie underneath them when they activate. Every time two of four pistons come out; one decoy, and one with Eggman laughing inside of it. Sonic must attack the piston with Eggman in it. Each time the pistons move, Sonic is able to attack Eggman once. However, the player has to be careful depending which pistons will come out attempting to crush Sonic. Also, between each piston cycles, there is a small electric generator creating four spark balls that descend from the ceiling towards Sonic, who must dodge them. When the generator is creating and aiming these spark balls, the player has to choose a place to stay to avoid them. Due to the absence of Rings, touching a spark ball (or getting crushed) results in instantly losing a life. The player can target them to the center of room and then do a Spin Jump to dodge them completely or can stay at one far side of the room and move to the other as the spark balls are fired. After this, another two pistons will appear, and the battle keeps repeating the pattern.
Like every other boss in the game, Sonic must hit Eggman eight times to finish off the doctor for good. After landing all eight hits, the pistons start exploding and Eggman escapes from the room. Sonic must follow him, as Eggman hops into his Egg Mobile and starts flying away. During this time, the player is given the option to land one last hit on the Egg Mobile, which causes it to explode, sending Eggman downwards towards a pit. If the player does not land the extra hit, Eggman simply flies away. Regardless, this choice has no effect on gameplay, as the Zone subsequently ends.
Trivia[]
- If Sonic delivers the final hit to the Egg Crusher and hits twice instead (with the right timing), a glitch will happen which indicates that the boss needs to be hit another 255 times, caused by overflowing the hit point counter for the boss. This will make the boss impossible to defeat, as it cannot be hit 255 times before the player times over.
- After defeating the Egg Crusher, a glitch may happen that causes Sonic to jump into a bottomless pit, thus losing a Life. None of these glitches exist in versions that do not use the original Mega Drive engine, such as Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis and the 2013 remaster.
- In Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis, the spark balls are always lethal, even when they are charging up.

Books and comics[]
Sonic X[]
The Egg Crusher is briefly featured in the Sonic X comic series published by Archie Comics, albeit only appearing in Eggman's virtual simulation. After reaching Final Zone, Sonic and his friends defeated the Egg Crusher.
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Egg Crusher appeared as an installment in the Scrap Brain Zone following the launch of the first Genesis Wave. Sonic eventually arrived at the Final Zone, and despite interference from a Shield, managed to defeat Eggman and his Egg Crusher with the help of Antoine and the other Knothole Freedom Fighters.
After the events of Worlds Collide, the Egg Crusher was rewritten with a history nearly identical to its game counterpart.
Trivia[]
- In Sonic Mania, the Egg Crusher is referenced in Metallic Madness Zone with the Egg Pistons mk.II mini-boss, which appears to be an upgraded version of this boss.
- Despite Egg Piston mk.II's name and status as an upgraded version of this boss, the Egg Crusher has not otherwise been named 'Egg Pistons' in any official capacity.
