The Egg Cauldron is a vehicle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a flying fortress armed to the teeth with aircraft and weapons which was used by Dr. Eggman.
The Egg Cauldron is a large bronze-colored hemisphere-shaped flying fortress resembling a cauldron per its namesake. It has six long, thin wings (three mounted on both sides of the fortress), six pairs of missile-launching cannons stationed around various points around the Egg Cauldron (with pink lights below each lower cannon), several fans on top of the fortress' circular base an attachment of four propellers under the main body itself. Small round white lights can be seen emitted around the fotress' body and a grey section with a patterned light strip surrounding the rim of the fotress' circular base.
It also has a gray metallic door which can be opened to release troops stationed inside the fortress.
Powers and features[]
Thanks to the large fans that operate it, the Egg Cauldron is capable of intercontinental travel, and can keep up with the Tornado-1. The Egg Cauldron also has a large arsenal that acts as a base for Eggman's aerial troops. Its armaments, as seen in battle, consist of several missile launchers located around the top of the fortress itself, as well as a special cannon hidden inside the central hatch, that seemingly launches fireballs (although it is used rarely).
History[]
The Egg Cauldron first encountered Sonic, Tails and Chip during the trio's trip to Spagonia in the Tornado-1. Despite SA-55's warnings, Dr. Eggman had the incomplete Egg Cauldron fight the bi-plane, only to be forced into retreat when the Egg Cauldron's energy levels dropped.[1][2] After being perfected, the Egg Caldron was sent to intercept Sonic, Tails and Chip when they were heading for Eggmanland, only for the vessel to face defeat again.[3][4]
In the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed, the Egg Cauldron is featured as the main boss of Tornado Defense, and is encountered at the end of both Acts. This makes the Egg Cauldron the first and the eighth boss of the game overall (in Act 1 and Act 2 respectively). Both encounters share a near-identical strategy for the player to deal with this boss.
Boss guide[]
The player must survive by destroying the enemies and/or the weapons attacking the Tornado-1. Unlike other bosses, a timer counting down is shown on screen; in Act I, the timer starts at 2 minutes and 30 seconds while in Act II, the timer starts at 3 minutes and 30 seconds. There is one primary way to beat this boss and one secondary method that only works during Act I:
Method One: Wait until Eggman launches a full-scale attack (When the player hears him saying "Go, fire all weapons."), by sending a large number of enemies and missiles at the player at once. After defeating all of the enemies, the large access door will remain open a couple of seconds. While it is open, the player must shoot at it by pressing whatever button is indicated five times, which will damage and gradually deplete the Egg Cauldron's Health Gauge. Repeat until the Egg Cauldron's Health Gauge is fully depleted to defeat the boss (which occurs after the player shoots at the Egg Cauldron 20 times).
Method Two: During Act I, it is possible to win the battle by simply surviving the onslaught of enemies and missiles attacking Sonic and Tails until the 2 minutes and 30 seconds timer expires. After this occurs, the same sequence of events plays as if the player defeated the Egg Cauldron with the first method. However, this approach will not work during Act II. Allowing the 3 minutes and 30 seconds timer to reach zero here will result in the Egg Cauldron launching what appears to be a massive fireball-like projectile from the central hatch that automatically shoots down the Tornado, costing the player a life.
If Sonic and Tails are defeated by the Egg Cauldron, the player will have to restart the whole act from the beginning.
Trivia[]
Due to the mini-game Tornado Defense not being in the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, this fight is skipped entirely, meaning this is the only boss that does not appear on the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed.
This is the only boss that the player has to fight twice in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version.
This is also the only boss in the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed that does not award any Experience Points upon defeating it.
