The Egg Cannon[1] (ボールシューター[2] Bōru Shūtā?, lit. "Ball Shooter"), also known as the Cannon Baller,[3] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a combat machine created and piloted by Dr. Robotnik during the first part of the Angel Island incident.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Egg Cannon is a machine that has two underground cannons below where Dr. Robotnik pilots it.
Features and abilities[]
The Egg Cannon is equipped with two cannons that can shoot black cannonballs from its hatches.
History[]
Sonic 3 & Knuckles[]
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik used the Egg Cannon in an attempt to destroy Sonic and Tails before the Death Egg's launch in Launch Base Zone. However, the device was destroyed by the heroes.
Battle[]
The Egg Cannon is the first of three bosses fought at the end of Launch Base Zone Act 2 in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and the twelfth boss overall in these games. It is battled with Sonic and Tails. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.
Boss guide[]
After the player gets close to the Death Egg, Dr. Robotnik jumps on the Egg Cannon and starts firing cannonballs from one of two hatches below the hill. The mobile of the Egg Cannon itself is set high enough to be out of range of a Spin Jump.
When the cannonball is fired from the lower hatch, it will roll to the left side of the screen. However, due to not gaining enough momentum on the hill to the left, it will roll back and crash into the closed hatch wall. The Egg Cannon's upper hatch can fire two ways, as it can fire cannonballs far off-screen where they break to pieces, or will not shoot far enough, causing the cannonballs to roll back into the lower hatch's wall in a similar way with not having enough momentum to get up the ramp.
Cannonballs are the only things that can damage the player, short of touching the Egg Cannon without using the Spin Jump. When the Egg Cannon is ready to fire cannonballs, the hatch door normally raises up, where it acts as a platform while horizontal and will help the player reach the cockpit to hit the Egg Cannon. However, if the player has a Lightning Shield equipped during the battle, they can easily get to the cockpit by double jumping and continuously attacking.
Like many other regular bosses, eight hits are required to defeat the Egg Cannon. Upon the Egg Cannon's destruction, Robotnik falls down along with the destroyed machine. After that, the player will find an Egg Mobile that the playable character can use to progress to a platform below the Death Egg, where they will fight the next boss.
Trivia[]
- If the player manages to jump high enough when approaching the downward slope towards the Egg Cannon, it is possible to start attacking the Egg Mobile before Robotnik jumps onto the seat and defeat the boss before the battle begins.
- There is a glitch where Tails can get stuck under the Egg Cannon if the player is using Sonic and Tails, which will make for an easy win as Tails jumps repeatedly trying to get out, but ends up damaging the Egg Cannon instead.
- Under regular gameplay, Knuckles does not fight this boss due to being unable to jump high enough to continue along Sonic's route in Act 2 to reach the Egg Cannon. However, if played on Debug Mode, it becomes possible for him to encounter this boss although Knuckles is not able to jump high enough to reach it, nor is he able to climb on the wall. Also, Robotnik pilots the machine instead of an Eggrobo (unless playing on Sonic Origins).
- Netherless, accomplishing this feat without Debug Mode is still practically possible (though very difficult). Sonic's route can still be accessed by using the Glide (in a manner that allows him to gain height by destroying a Flybot767 Badnik lured to the area to reach the lift). Also, Knuckles can defeat the Egg Cannon although it requires that Knuckles needs to be attacked by a launched cannonball, knocking him back in a way which can clip Knuckles through the invisible wall that normally prevents Knuckles from reaching the Egg Cannon, causing him to end up on its cockpit. From there, Knuckles can simply jump repeatedly (despite being stuck) to hit and destroy the Egg Cannon.
- This is the only Act 2 boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 that does not incorporate Robotnik's Egg Mobile.
