The Eclipse Cannon is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs. It is an orbital satellite created by Gerald Robotnik that sports a built in laser of immense power.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Eclipse Cannon is a large hemisphere-shaped aerial station, easily eclipsing several buildings in size. It is capable of flight and levitation via large jet engines located on its underside. The top side of the Eclipse Cannon features structures designed to resemble the face of Gerald Robotnik, while the underside sports six retractable prongs that form the weapon when extended.

Features and Abilities[]

The Eclipse Cannon can fly and levitate via large jet engines located on its underside. It is also powered by Shadow's chaos energy via a generator line, which immediately vaporizes Gerald when pushed into it. The Eclipse Cannon can release an army of Gun Hunters, which could give enough time for the Cannon to fire its laser.

When fired, its laser beam was so powerful that it needed both Super Sonic and Shadow to repel the blast. Even then, when the blast was diverted away from Earth, it cut off a large chunk of the moon.

When overloaded with Shadow's chaos energy, Dr. Robotnik stated that the explosion would release catastrophic levels of radiation, which if allowed to enter Earth's atmosphere would result in acid rain severe enough to kill crops and melt human flesh. Its explosion was so immense it was easily visible from the Earth and could even be larger than the Earth.

History[]

Past[]

While imprisoned by the government, Gerald Robotnik conceptualized the Eclipse Cannon, giving the shadow ops program access to his drawn schematics in exchange for his release. Using Gerald's plans, the government constructed the Eclipse Cannon for their own usage.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3[]

After having acquired the second key at G.U.N. Headquarters in London, Shadow, Gerald, and Dr. Ivo Robotnik teleported into the Eclipse Cannon and used to keys to prep it for launch. The cannon emerged from within the waters below the Tower Bridge within Thames River and rose high up into the Earth's atmosphere.

Gerald convinced Shadow for his help, and he dashed through a generator line to charge the weapon with chaos energy, then he started the countdown to fire the cannon. Gerald revealed the cannon will not only destroy G.U.N Headquarters, but will also destroy the entire Earth, leaving Robotnik in shock of the severity. However, Sonic, in his supercharged state, flew towards the cannon to intercept them, breaching through and ending up grabbing Shadow in the process.

While Sonic fought with Shadow, Robotnik distracted Gerald to shut down the weapon, but Gerald destroys the console and the two promptly fought against each other, with Gerald gaining the upper hand. Tails and Knuckles arrived in the last second to save Robotnik, and used Sonic's supercharged quill to push Gerald into the chaos energy field, vaporizing him.

Unable to stop the countdown, the cannon fired, but Sonic and Shadow repelled the laser for as long as they could. Robotnik, Tails, and Knuckles activated the cannon's thrusters to steer the cannon away from Earth's trajectory and narrowly managed to divert the laser, only to slice off a chunk of the moon.

After preventing Earth's destruction, the Eclipse Cannon's reactor went into meltdown. Robotnik theorized that the radiation released from the explosion would blanket the Earth in a nuclear winter. While Tails and Knuckles eject to save Sonic from falling, Robotnik and Shadow stayed behind to push the Eclipse Cannon away from Earth where it exploded in the stratosphere — along with them.

Trivia[]

  • The Eclipse Cannon is based on the object of the same name in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Although, its appearance is based on the Space Colony ARK and the Death Egg.
  • Unlike in the games, it did not need the Chaos Emeralds to power it up, instead Shadow provided it via chaos energy.
  • Gerald claimed that the cannon's destruction beam will "wipe out everything in a 25000 mile radius", which he claims is the diameter of Earth, but in reality, Earth's diameter is only about 80000 miles. This may be an error in the film.
  • Early concept arts show the cannon successfully destroying part of Earth.
