Echidnas are creatures that appear in the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics. It is a race of anthropomorphic animals from Sonic's world that can be recognized by their reddish fur and dreadlock-like spikes.
Generations prior to the events of Sonic X, the echidnas thrived as a clan known as the Knuckles Clan in what became the Mystic Ruins. After incurring the wrath of Chaos however, much of the Knuckles Clan was wiped out. Following the containment of Chaos in the Master Emerald, the echidnas of the Knuckles Clan took up residence on Angel Island and assumed the duty of guarding the Master Emerald. Since then though, the echidnas seemingly entered terminal decline; in the present day, only one living descendant of the Knuckles Clan, and of the echidna race in its entirety, remains: Knuckles the Echidna. While maintaining his duty, Knuckles has also participated in the ongoing conflicts outside of Angel Island, and has played a vital role in preventing many catastrophes.
Description[]
Anatomy[]
Echidnas are anthropomorphic animals with humanoid physiques and long spine-like quills that looks like dreadlocks hanging from around their heads. They are also shown to get no more than little over a meter tall when it comes to average height. Other features they all share include peach-skinned muzzles with black noses, wide eyes and tri-crooked tails. In addition, they have fur in different red hues, such as regular red and orange-peach.
Notably, teenage echidnas like Knuckles sport thin limbs and medium-sized torsos. Adult echidnas however, like those from the Knuckles Clan, are shown to be more top-heavy and muscular.
Characteristics and culture[]
The echidnas of the Knuckles Clan wore certain attires and body decorations. The men of the Knuckles Clan sported white, intricate tattoos all over their bodies, especially on their heads, torsos and arms. When it came to attire, the men wore gloves similar to those worn by Knuckles. The men were also the only members of their clan to possess spiky protrusions/knuckles on their gloves, along with open sandals and blue bracelets on their ankles. In addition, some of the men wore golden necklaces with blue jewels embedded in them. The male chieftains would wear gloves, sandals and bracelets like the the men as well, but with additional accessories, such as ornaments with feathers and more decorative bracelets.
Little is known about the common dress code for female echidnas. If Tikal can be used as a representative, it can be assumed that female echidnas wore many ornaments and clothes rich with details. Gold necklaces, pendants and other ornaments were a common part of Tikal's attire. Other pieces of attire Tikal wore included a tank top, a patterned skirt and white bandages wrapped around her lower legs and dreadlocks. Like the men though, she also wore blue bracelets and sandals. Unlike the males though, Tikal wore five-fingered gloves.
Most of the echidnas of the Knuckles Clan were shown to be very warlike and hungry for conquest, to the extent of pillaging and harming other countries to satisfy their thirst for conquest.[1] The Knuckles Clan were also a patriarchy in political organization,[2] being ruled by a chieftain. There was no democracy, and the ruler was absolute in the chief's authority.

Past[]
Generations ago, the echidnas of the Knuckles Clan thrived in what became the Mystic Ruins. During chief Pachacamac's rule, the Knuckles Clan was a body of war who conducted a series of violent conquests of the neighboring countries to expand their empire.[1][3] However, Pachacamac's pacifistic daughter Tikal would oppose her father's warmongering.[3]
Eventually, Pachacamac sought to steal the Chaos Emeralds at the Altar of Emerald, believing they were the keys to the echidnas' continued prosperity. However, Tikal, who had befriend the Chao and their guardian Chaos at the altar, pleaded him not to go through with his plan.[3] In the end, Pachacmac and the clan attacked the altar in a violent raid, where Tikal and the local Chao tried to stop them. Pachacamac, however, ignored Tikal's pleas for a peaceful resolution and had his men trample over them. This profound act of indiscrimination enraged Chaos, corrupting it with anger. In retaliation, it transformed into Perfect Chaos using the Chaos Emeralds. Evaporating Pachacamac and his men, Chaos destroyed the majority of the Knuckles Clan. Before Chaos could destroy the rest of the world, Tikal sealed Chaos in the Master Emerald with herself.[4] However, some echidnas still survived the onslaught.
After Chaos' attack, the echidnas of the Knuckles Clan took up residence on Angel Island and assumed the duty of guarding the Master Emerald. Over time though, the echidnas seemingly entered terminal decline; in the present, the only surviving member of the Knuckles Clan is Knuckles the Echidna, who lives alone on Angel Island, guarding the Master Emerald.[5]
