Dr. Eggman, Sonic Unleashed

The Drill Attack[1] is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a technique used by the Egg Dragoon where it fires its drill as a missile.

Description[]

The Drill Attack is a very dangerous and destructive move. When using it, the Egg Dragoon locks onto a target and launches its main drill as an electrified dart/missile. After that, it reloads its arm with another drill. This attack's impact is great enough to penetrate meter-thick metal platting. Following its upgrade during the Time Eater incident, this attack became able to create a devastating electrical explosion upon impact as well.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Unleashed[]

Drill AttackUnleashed

The Drill Attack breaking through the foothold, from the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed.

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, the Drill Attack is only used during the Egg Dragoon boss fight. In gameplay, the Egg Dragoon launches its Drill Attack at Sonic during every Real-Time Interaction done on it, which can be dodged by pressing the correct buttons. After completing the Egg Dragoon's first Real-Time Interaction, the mech will also use the Drill Attack to destroy the foothold the battle takes place one and make the player drop down on the second one. If the player takes too long to defeat the Egg Dragoon atop the second foothold, the Egg Dragoon will eventually use the Drill Attack again to move onto the next foothold.

When the Drill Attack is launched at the foothold, it only affects the foothold, as it is always initiated during a cinematic scene where the player's location on the foothold does not matter, thus preserving them from its impact.

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Drill Attack only appears during the Egg Dragoon boss battle. During the intro to this battle, the Egg Dragoon will fire a Drill Attack at Sonic, who promptly dodges it, as a warning shot.

In gameplay, the Drill Attack is a long-distance attack for Sonic. Whenever the Egg Dragoon is about to launch it, a red targeting marker will appear over Sonic to warn the player. The Egg Dragoon uses this attack under three circumstances:

  • If the player has been launched onto the Grind Rails along the arena, the Egg Dragoon will fire the Drill Attack at Sonic as he rides down the rails. To avoid the attack, the player must use the Boost while grinding.
  • When the Egg Dragoon is nearly defeated and Sonic is fighting in 3D perspective, the Egg Dragoon will use the Drill Attack as a final move. This time around, the Egg Dragoon will fire a number of Drill Attacks right in front of Sonic so he will get caught in the explosions from their impacts. The Drill Attack's explosions also last much longer so the player has a greater chance of getting caught in them. To avoid the attack, the player has to use the Quick Step just before the drill impacts the ground.
  • During the battle's Skydiving segments, the Egg Dragoon only attacks using the Drill Attack. This time around, the Drill Attack is faster than before, and is trickier to dodge. To avoid the attack, the player must constantly move to the sides when the attack is utilized.
