The Double Jump (ダブルジャンプ[1] Daburu Janpu?) is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a technique that was first used by Sonic the Hedgehog, but has since been used by several other characters as well. When performing this move, the user does an additional jump in midair.

Description[]

The Double Jump is a special move used after performing a jump. When performing it, the user does an additional jump in midair without using any solid surfaces to set off from. In gameplay, this allows the player to get higher into the air to accomplish different feats, such as crossing gaps too wide for a regular jump or reach targets that cannot be reached otherwise. Its jumping height varies from game to game though.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

The Double Jump first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, as one of Sonic's special moves. In the original Japanese material, it is referred to as the 2-Step Jump (2段ジャンプ 2-Dan Janpu?).

To use the Double Jump, the player must have obtained the Lighting Shield. Then, to perform it in gameplay, the player must press Sega Genesis A Button/Sega Genesis B Button/Sega Genesis C Button during a Spin Jump. After setting off with the Double Jump, Sonic will continue to use the Spin Attack which can be used to damage enemies and obstacles. However, should Sonic lose the Lightning Shield, he can no longer Double Jump.

While Sonic is transformed into Hyper Sonic in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the player is able to use a new attack that functions like a Double Jump which also destroys all nearby enemies.

Sonic Blast[]

In Sonic Blast, the Double Jump is referred to as the Sonic Boost Blast[2] (ダブルジャンプ[1] Daburu Janpu?, lit. "Double Jump") and can only be performed by Sonic. When setting off with the Double Jump in this game, Sonic gives off a burst of sparkles. Also, after setting off with the Double Jump, Sonic will continue to use the Spin Attack, which can be used to damage enemies and obstacles.

To perform the Double Jump in gameplay, the player has to press Game Gear I Button/Game Gear II Button during a Spin Jump.

Sonic R[]

In Sonic R, the technique is known as the Double Jump[3] (2段ジャンプ[4] 2-Dan Janpu?, lit. "2-Step Jump") and is one of the specific character moves for Sonic and Super Sonic, except Super Sonic can reach much greater heights with his. To use it in gameplay, the player has to press Sega Saturn A Button/Sega Saturn C Button/Sega Saturn Y Button to jump and then press either of these buttons again to trigger the Double Jump.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the Double Jump is only used by Amy Rose. When using it, Amy spins around, similar to the Spin Attack, before jumping. The move's jumping height in this game equals the height of her first jump, though at the cost of its transit range. To use it in gameplay, the player must press Cross/XboxA during a jump.

Sonic Unleashed[]

In Sonic Unleashed, the Double Jump can only be performed by Sonic the Werehog. In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, Sonic spins around in midair when using the Double Jump, unlike in the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, where he simply sets off in midair. By using the Dash to set off from, the player can increase the Double Jump's transit. The Dash, however, is cancelled as soon as Sonic touches the ground again after performing the Double Jump. To use the Double Jump in gameplay, the player must press the following button during a jump:

PS2 Wii PS3 Xbox 360

Sonic Colors[]

In the Wii version of Sonic Colors and the remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate, the Double Jump is used by Sonic, the Virtual Hedgehogs, the Mii (Wii version) and Super Sonic. After setting off with the Double Jump, the user will continue to use the Spin Attack, which can be used to damage enemies and obstacles. To use it in gameplay, the player has to press the following button during a regular Spin Jump:

Wii Xbox One PS4 Switch PC
Wii Remote

It should be noted that using the Double Jump while boosting will cancel out the Boost. Also, while in underwater sections, the move can be performed an infinite number of times until the user resurfaces from the water.

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations and the remaster Sonic X Shadow Generations, the Double Jump can only be performed by Classic Sonic. Like in the previous game, after setting off with the Double Jump, Classic Sonic will continue to use the Spin Attack, which can be used to damage enemies and obstacles.

Like in Sonic 3, it is required that the player is in possession of the Thunder Shield before they can perform the Double Jump. Once the player loses the Thunder Shield, Classic Sonic can no longer Double Jump. To perform it in gameplay, the player has to press Cross/XboxA during a Spin Jump.

Sonic Lost World[]

Double Jump (Lost World)

Sonic using the Double Jump, from the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World.

In the Wii U version, PC version and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the Double Jump is used by Sonic, the Ivory Lightning, the Virtual Hedgehogs, and Super Sonic. To use the Double Jump in gameplay, the player has to press WiiDSA/DSB during a jump. The move differs between the Wii U/PC and Nintendo 3DS versions:

  • In the Wii U/PC version, Sonic does a backflip instead of curling into a ball, leaving him vulnerable to attacks. In the Nintendo 3DS version, he stays curled.
  • In the Wii U/PC version, Sonic decelerates after using the move. In the Nintendo 3DS version, he preserves his acceleration if any.
  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, if Sonic falls off the side of a platform, he can use one "double" jump to help recover. This is not possible in the Wii U/PC version.
  • In the Wii U/PC version, pressing DSB will always perform a Double Jump, even if Sonic is locked on to enemies; pressing WiiDSA will perform a Double Jump only if there are no targets to use the Homing Attack on. In the Nintendo 3DS version, the latter behavior is always used.

On the Wii U/PC version of the game, the Double Jump's range depends on the speed Sonic is running at, and the direction the player wants to Double Jump in depends on Sonic's running direction.

Sonic Jump series[]

Sonic Jump 1 and 2[]

In Sonic Jump and its sequel, Sonic is able to perform the Double Jump if the player presses the central button (depending on their mobile phone model) of the device while Sonic is in mid-air.

Sonic Jump (2012)[]

In Sonic Jump (2012), every playable character can perform the Double Jump by tapping the screen of the device while the character is in mid-air.

Sonic Jump Fever[]

In Sonic Jump Fever, every playable character can perform the Double Jump by tapping the screen of the device while the character is in mid-air. In addition, each character's Double Jump also has its own effects as listed below:

  • Tails: Descends slower, allowing the player to control Tails more easily on the way down.
  • Knuckles: Allows Knuckles to punch through and destroy rebound platforms.
  • Amy: Amy swings her Piko Piko Hammer while spinning in the Double Jump, which gives her a larger attack radius that lets her hit enemies more easily.
  • Blaze: Upon performing the Double Jump, Blaze releases two waves of fire that extend horizontally towards both ends of the screen, destroying any enemies caught in its blast.
  • Shadow: Upon performing the Double Jump, Shadow performs a Chaos Spear that shoots upwards, homing onto nearby enemies.
  • Silver: Upon performing the Double Jump, Silver generates a psychic energy field which attracts certain objects (such as Spheres, Item Boxes and Animal Containers).

Also, in Sonic Jump Fever, by collecting the Flame Jump Power-Up, Blaze can perform multiple Double Jumps in a row for as long as this Power-Up is in effect.

Sonic Mania[]

In Sonic Mania and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Double Jump is a move that only Sonic can perform, and only while he is equipped with the Lightning Shield; without it, the Double Jump will be unusable. Like in several past games, after setting off with the Double Jump in this game, Sonic will continue to use the Spin Attack which can be used to damage enemies and obstacles. To perform this move in gameplay, the player has to press the following button during a Spin Jump:

PS4 Switch Xbox One PC
Square/Cross/Circle Switch y/Switch a/Switch b X button/A button/B button

Sonic Forces[]

Doublejumpforces

In Sonic Forces, the Double Jump is usable by both Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog. The Avatar can also use the Double Jump if their selected species is "Bird". When Sonic (or Shadow) performs the Double Jump in this game, he will continue to use the Spin Attack after setting off in mid-air, which can be used to damage enemies and obstacles. When the Avatar performs the Double Jump however, they simply do a backflip that lacks any offensive traits.

To perform the Double Jump in gameplay, the player has to press Switch b/Cross/A button during a jump.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, the Double Jump (ダブルジャンプ[5] Daburu Janpu?) makes an appearance as one of Sonic's primary moves. Executable in Open Zone areas and Cyber Space stages, the player can adjust the direction and landing position while using the move much like in previous mainline games. The player can perform the Double Jump by pressing Switch b/Cross/A button twice after preforming the Spin Jump.[5] Sonic can also set off performing the Drop Dash, when the player keeps pressing down Switch b/Cross/A button while performing the Double Jump in the mid-air.

Sonic Superstars[]

In Sonic Superstars the Double Jump is a moved used by Amy Rose and Trip the Sungazer. By pressing Switch b/Cross/A button after performing the Spin Jump, the player will perform a second jump, allowing Amy or Trip to gain extra height or distance.
