Dr. Thomas Light is a very skilled man in the field of Advanced Robotics. He is also the "father" of Rock, Roll, Blues, and the first 8 Robot Masters (alongside 8 other Robot Masters who turns evil later. Two of those Robot Masters include Splash Woman and Concrete Man). In the past, he worked alongside Dr. Wily to make robots, but Light always got the credit for projects they did together. In the end, Wily took six Robot Masters, Ice Man, Guts Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man, Cut Man, and Elec Man, reprogrammed them, and set them off the destroy to city. In response, Light upgraded Rock from a common helper robot to the super fighting robot, Mega Man, and has been assisting his son by giving advice and upgrades ever since.

Dr. Thomas Light is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, and is one of the protagonists of the Mega Man comic series. He is a world-renowned robotics engineer from an alternate Earth in the year 20XX. He is the creator of Mega Man, Roll and Proto Man among several others, as well as the founder of Light Labs. When his former colleague Dr. Wily turned to a life of crime, Dr. Light upgraded Rock upon his request from a common helper robot to the super fighting robot, Mega Man, to battle Wily's forces, and has been assisting his son by giving advice and upgrades ever since.

Appearance
  +
Dr. Light is a tall, male human with thick white hair and a long beard who is somewhat overweight-one of the concepts behind his design was "Santa Claus in a lab coat." Under the coat he typically wears a white shirt with a light brown vest and a blue tie. He also sports red pants and brown shoes, and during the final battle with the Robot Master Army donned Proto Man's helmet and a cannon he built himself out of wreckage from the fight.

Early life
+
Worlds Collide
  +
Prelude
Much of Light's early life is unknown, but it's known that he and Wily went to Robert University of Technology to study Advanced Robotics. Together, they made many advancements that are seen now. During that time, they began working together, but Light got most, if not, all of the credit for the work they did together. Some time later, they were later nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics, but Light won the prize. Eventually, Light met Dr. Mikhail Sergeyevich Cossack when he came over from Russia to do his thesis work and the two began friends. He also met Dr. Noele LaLinde and they developed a mutual romantic interest in each other.

During Mega City's celebration of Mega Man's birthday, Dr. Light witnessed his former creation Proto Man (under the alias Break Man) attacking the city, making quick work of Robot Masters Bomb Man, Guts Man and Cut Man. Proto Man then fought Mega Man and was about to defeat him, only for the latter to plead to spared so that his "father" Dr. Light's heart wouldn't be broken. Break Man was about to depart until Mega Man grabbed a hold to unmask him. Before either could do anything further, however, the Genesis Wave struck, rewriting reality across Earth.

Clash of Worlds
  +
After the Genesis Wave subsided, Light got the feeling that he was forgetting something about his past, but put it aside while working on Bond Man. He, alongside Rock and Roll also witnessed a breaking news report regarding the Mega City Federal Reserve being attacked by four unidentified robots, with Proto Man fighting against them. Mega Man later informed him of a strange portal that appeared when a strange blue blur appeared and had the other robots escape as he entered the portal in pursuit. A damaged Proto Man later arrived at Light Labs with information on the Warp Ring, and to Light's relief allowed Roll to take him aside for repairs. He also was contacted by Time Man about a time-space anomaly, and sent a message requesting Duo's aid in solving the spacial imbalance.
Light needed some money to start up Light Labs to fund his robot research, so he made a deal with the military. He would make robots for them, and they'll fund his research. After an unknown amount of time, he and Wily created DLN-000, dubbed Blues, the first Robot Master, and the first robot to have emotions, a personality, and independent thinking (but still bound by programming). Before Blues was shown to the military, Light took him around the city to show him the world, even getting him his trademark sunglasses and yellow scarf and at the end of the day, he heard Blues whistling a song that he made up. During the military exercise, Blues suffered a malfunction as a result of his unstable nuclear core. Nonetheless, the military continued to fund Light.

Dr. Light eventually was kidnapped by Bass and Metal Sonic under the orders of Wily and his new partner, Dr. Eggman and taken to the Wily Egg in the Skull Egg Zone pocket dimension, although not before creating a recreation of the Warp Ring to allow Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man to enter Mega City. From there, Light was held prisoner in the Wily Egg and learned that Dr. Wily and Eggman had rewritten their universes with the Genesis Wave in an effort to defeat their blue enemies. While enduring gloating from the evil doctors, Light also supplied information to Rouge the Bat regarding the Wily Egg's weakpoint. As Wily and Eggman's Robot Master Army fought Mega man and his allies, Light was nearly killed by a Motobug and Mettaur, although they destroyed themselves by accident due to their bumping into each other. He thus attempted to convince Wily and Eggman of the foolishness of their plans to reshape the universe, reminding both scientists of various instances when they had attempted similar things. Unfortunately, his references to other threats were dismissed by both doctors.

Using the Motobug and Mettaur's parts, Light tried to create a radio system to send an SOS signal. However, the signal was too weak to penetrate the Wily Egg's exterior and only succeeded in giving him away to Eggman's robots, who likewise informed Eggman of Light's transmission. Thomas was later thrown out by Eggman into the crater beneath the Wily Egg, largely because Eggman deduced how much of a threat he was to his and Wily's plans, but was saved by Shadow the Hedgehog's Chaos Control. He later aided the Proto Man and Sonic's allies in fighting the Robot Master Army in order to hold them off while Mega Man, Rush, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Miles "Tails" Prower infiltrated the Wily Egg. When Rush returned with a badly wounded Tails, Dr. Light examined him but due to his lack of medical experience was unable to do much for the heroic young Fox. After Light's original Light Robot Masters arrived as the cavalry, Light, Knuckles, Rush, and Proto Man, having deduced that Mega Man and Sonic ran into trouble, infiltrated the Wily Egg themselves while the Robot Masters provided cover. Afterwards, Light, after freeing Mega Man and Sonic, aided them in trying to shut down the Genesis Wave Generator, although because the controls were out of reach, he could not disable it, resulting in a backup plan where Sonic and Mega Man would adopt super forms to undo the Genesis Wave with Chaos Control. He joined Knuckles and Proto Man in fleeing the battle between Super Armor Mega Man and Super Sonic and the Egg-Wily Machine X, but was engulfed by the Super Genesis Wave. Fortunately, Super Mega Man later reversed its effects, returning his reality to normal and Dr. Light to his proper place in time.

Worlds Unite
Later, Light was arguing with Wily about changing his core. Some time after that, he contacted LaLinde to relay his problems about Blues to her, while offhandedly joking that he wishes to remove his rebellious streak, which Blues (who was overhearing) took literally and ran off, feeling betrayed. Despite Light's best efforts, he was unable to find his first son and was forced to give up. Some time after that, he and Wily went their separate ways and Light no longer had to rely on the military and built robots for the betterment of mankind. He first built two "children", DLN-001 and DLN-002, named Rock and Roll respectively, due to his love of music. He would later build DLN-003 to DLN-008, called Cut Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man, and Elec Man (in the order) and unveiled them at Titanium Park to introduce the world to the Robot Masters.

After the apparent death of Dr. Wily after his most recent scheme that left Light Labs in ruin, Dr. Light soon had Light Labs back up and running with the aid of the Light Robot Masters. Unfortunately, Mega Man disappeared while on a supply run, and Sonic Man appeared and attacked Mega City. Reluctantly, Light allowed his original Robot Masters to engage Sonic Man. only for them to be defeated. Dr. Light then called upon the eight Wily Robot Masters who had chosen to be reprogrammed and reformed, and called upon them to fight against Sonic Man. Quake Woman also volunteered to help out, as she knew that the situation was upsetting to Roll, and the nine robots quickly entered the fray. Sadly, both they and Break Man failed to overcome the threat, and Sonic Man activated a Unity Engine that began merging Earth with Sonic's World. This led to an encounter between Dr. Light and his robotic allies and the Freedom Fighters, who were soon joined by X and the Maverick Hunters and Team Sticks.

Wily's First Attack
+
Legacy
  +
Some years into the future, Dr. Light created an even more advanced type of robot with the capacity for human emotion. Dubbing his creation Mega Man X, Light placed him in a protective capsule that would analyze his systems and insure that they wouldn't break down, doing so because the process would take longer than he had left and he had no successors to carry on his work. X would later be awakened in the year 21XX-a century after the time of Mega Man-and become the template for a new race of robots, the Reploids. X made it his mission to fulfill Light's dream, but would face difficulty in the rise of the Mavericks, a group of robots who turned against humanity due to infection by a virus and through conscious rebellion against their creators.
Later that day, while Light, Rock, and Roll were sleeping, Wily broke into Light Labs, reprogrammed the Robot Masters, and left to set them loose. The following day, Light and his children were horrified at the amount of destruction the Robot Masters were causing; and Rock volunteered to stand up to Wily, much to Light's initial dismay. In the end, he agreed and he and Roll worked to upgrade Rock Light from a normal robot who helps out around the lab, to Mega Man, the super fighting robot to fight against Wily. Equipping Rock with a special Mega Buster and a Copy Chip to Copy the Robot Masters' abilities. With the Mega Buster, Rock thus dubbed himself Mega Man and Light teleported him to the first Robot Master, Bomb Man.

Personality
Following the defeat of Bomb Man and Guts Man, Mega Man was depressed that he was destroying his fellow robots, but Roll brough him back around and reassured him that Mega Man was doing the right thing. And after the defeat of Cut Man, Elec Man, Ice Man, and Fire Man, he transported Mega Man back to Light Labs, noticing that his son was beginning to go mad with power and put him in an unbreakable block and watched quietly as he tried every weapon he copied from the Robot Masters to break free, which caused Roll to run away with tears in her eyes. This broke Mega Man out of his power madness and requested Light to take his powers away and claimed that he was turning evil. But Light reassured him that he wasn't evil and gave his son a rousing speech about building Rock in his image and giving him everything he has, except for "the burning in [his] heart". He agreed with taking away the copied powers, but only after Wily is defeated and gave him the Magnet Beam, which he assures Rock is a completely non-violent weapon and sends him to the outskirts of Wily's Fortress. Due to interference, Mega Man was unable to contact Light and Roll for the remainder of the attack. After Wily was defeated, Light was informed that the Robot Masters have broken free of Wily's programming and are ready to be returned to normal when they get back.

  +
Dr. Light is an idealist whose greatest hope is that his robotic creations can make life better for humans. He is tremendously proud of his "children," caring for them with all the affection of a father for biological offspring, and expressing concern for them as well. Like Mega Man, he has been reluctantly forced to stand up and defend the world from the predations of Dr. Wily and other evils, typically doing so by aiding Mega Man from the sidelines. Despite the many betrayals Wily has dealt him, however, Light has never ceased his efforts to help his former colleague see reason, particularly when the latter takes a path of self-destruction that Light has seen him walk all too often.

Powers and abilities
Time and Oil Blend Together to Make Trouble
  +
Dr. Light is a brilliant scientist and an expert in terms of robotics and machinery. He is capable of cobbling together useful gadgetry from even the meanest spare parts, and while he abhors violence is a capable shot.
Following Wily's arrest, Light had Mega Man, Roll, and the Robot Masters fix all the damage done to the city, free of charge to make up for his very Robot Masters causing the destruction and was confronted by Gilbert D. Stern and his partner, Roslyn Krantz, the former believes that Light is hiding something. Light and Rock later take part in Wily's prison-transfer to make sure Wily doesn't escape, but the convoy is attacked by a lone Sniper Joe. While Mega Man was dealing with the robot, Wily somehow escaped with nobody seeing him. Naturally, Gilbert believes that it was all planned and that Light and Mega Man were working with Wily and helped him escape. Light, to prove his innocence and give Mega Man a chance to find and capture Wily, allows himself to be arrested and tells Mega Man to go to his check on his sister.

After a failed attempt to find Roll, Mega Man (and Roslyn) contact Gilbert so they could talk to Light (he was being kept at Gilbert and Roslyn's office in the meantime). Naturally, Light was worried about his "daughter", and is horrified to learn that she was kidnapped, with traces of oil at the door to Light Labs alongside the groceries Light wanted Roll to pick up. Light was able to piece together that it was most likely Roll's kidnapping and Wily's escape were done by two experimental robots he and Wily started working on, but were unable to finish before the Robot Masters were unveiled: Oil Man and Time Man. One made for oil-spill management and the other able to manipulate time. He also mentioned that they were last tested at an abandoned workshop and that Wily is most likely hiding there and gives Mega Man and Roslyn the address.

In the end, Wily was long gone, but Oil Man and Time Man were captured and set to be reprogrammed for good by the recently released Dr. Thomas Light. While reprogramming Oil Man and Time Man, Light acknowledges that Wily will most likely return and that he'll need some help supporting Mega Man and considers building more helper robots, but reassures Rock and Roll that they'll never be made obsolete, as they are his children and no one is as precious to him as they are.

Wily's Return
Rock, Roll, Auto, and Dr. Light are celebrating Rock's final moments as Mega Man and are happy that he'll be returning to helping out around the lab, but the joy is short-lived when a new Robot Master named Quick Man threw Rock into a wall and pinned him with his Quick Boomerangs, tripped up Roll and pushed her into Light, knocking them both into a chair, and punched out Auto all within a matter of seconds. He then told the group that Wily is back and built Quick Man and his seven "brothers", placed him at various areas around the city, and will launch a great attack in a few hours, unless Mega Man and only Mega Man stopped them. If they called the authorities, the Robot Masters would begin their attack early. He told Mega Man that he'll wait for him at Titanium Park in one hour. After everyone recovered from the attack, Light uploaded the coordinates and teleported Mega Man to the area. Later, Mega Man was having trouble with the Robot Master stationed in the area, not Quick Man, but Wood Man. He advised Mega Man that Wood Man's structure is durable, but quite fragile, and could beat him with a point-blank charged shot from the Mega Buster. After defeating Wood Man and copying his Leaf Shield, Light noticed a spike in Mega Man's power and warns Mega Man to watch himself as he proceeded to the hydroelectric plant, where the next Robot Master, Bubble Man, is.

After Mega Man defeated Bubble Man with the Leaf Shield, Light warns him that the sulfuric acid (a very corrosive mineral acid, quite similar to actual acid, but works well in large amounts of water) levels were getting dangerously high. When he copies Bubble Man's Bubble Lead, Light informs him of another energy spike and believes it to be a virus. He urges his son to return to the lab to figure out where the next Robot Master is, take care of the energy spike problem, and repair all the damage he sustained, but Mega Man was attacked by Quick Man again. After a brief battle, Mega Man is still unable to get a hit on Quick Man, and the Blue Bomber was further damaged and teleported to a geothermal plant where Heat Man is. Light warns him that losing the plant would be dangerous, among other things, but his transmission is quite garbled. At the end, Mega Man is fighting Heat Man, but is having trouble and tries to ask Dr. Light for help, but is cut off from him from too much interference.

Back at the lab, Light, Roll, and Auto watched as Mega Man cooled down/defeated Heat Man with the Bubble Lead, was informed of where Crash Man is, and copied Heat Man's Atomic Fire. They were also quite upset the way Mega Man mercilessly excecuted the already beaten Heat Man with his Mega Buster aimed at his head; Mega Man's eyes even turned red and he had a sadistic smile on his face. Light leaves to work on an anti-virus for Mega Man and leaves Roll and Auto to assist Mega Man. After Mega Man defeated Crash Man (in truth, Crash Man, during his huge bout of rage, littered the entire room with his Crash Bombs, which went off. Mega Man survived by putting up the Leaf Shield), Roll said that Light wanted Mega Man to return home, but before he could give an answer, he noticed Crash Man was still functioning. He tells Mega Man that Air Man is stationed on the various platforms that monitor the weather over the city. He copies Crash Man's Crash Bombs, then lays a stream of Crash Bombs. He then detonates them when he gets far enough away from the room, thus destroying Crash Man. When Dr. Light returns, he demands Mega Man return to be repaired, recharged, and upgraded, but he refuses and continues on to defeat Air Man.

Following the battle with Air Man, Light noticed that Rock's energy cells are almost completely depleted and urges his son to return home. Mega Man refuses, saying that he'll just take the remaining energy cells from defeated enemies and takes Air Man's Air Shooter. Light transports Mega Man to the Industrial Processing Plant, where Metal Man is located. He warns Mega Man to stop being reckless, but is ignored, especially just as he reaches Metal Man's boss area. Mega Man defeated Metal Man being distracting him with the Crash Bomb, sneaking up behind him, copying his Metal Blades, and hitting him with it, but Rock was damaged even further. Finally putting his foot down, Light engaged the emergency teleport and informed Mega Man to sit tight. Finally had enough, Mega Man destroys the communication device in his helmet and blocked the teleport signal, so he'll be left alone to defeat the other two Robot Masters.

Light has by now figured out that this is all Wily's doing and wonders what the doctor has done to his son. He pieced together that Wily has created a Trojan Horse virus, making Mega Man act differently. While Light, Roll, and Auto couldn't contact Mega Man, they could still monitor him and see that he's in Flash Man's area. Auto is tasked with calling up some old "friends" while Light himself attempts to hack into Mega Man and install a "tracking program and an antivirus countermeasure".

Light's Lost Son
Following Flash Man's defeat (He was beaten while distracted by Rock's hair, as he has no hair of his own. While upset over his lack of hair, Quick Man of all robots hit him from behind with a Quick Boomerang), Rock's copy of Flash Man's Time Stopper, and Quick Man forcing Mega Man to drink an E-Tank (a valuable canister that completely refills Mega Man's health), Light watched as Mega Man chased after Quick Man and reached his boss area. By that time, the Anti-Virus program was uploaded by 70%. In the end, Mega Man overcame Quick Man's superior speed by stopping time with Flash Man's Time Stopper and hitting him with a fully charged Mega Buster shot (in the game, the Mega Buster can't be used alongside the Time Stopper. On top of that, Quick Man actually slowly loses health while time is stopped). And when he touches Quick Man and copies his Quick Boomerang, Rock is suddenly thrown back and teleported to the Wily Castle II and has become completely loyal to Dr. Wily.

Back at Light Labs, Light has lost the signal and comforts Roll, who's crying over losing her brother. Suddenly, Auto comes in with the "friends" he called; those friends being Elec Man, Bomb Man, Cut Man, Ice Man, Fire Man, Guts Man, Oil Man, and Time Man. All of them ready to return Mega Man the favor of saving them from Wily's control.

Pre-Worlds Collide
During Mega City's celebration of Mega Man's birthday, Dr. Light witnessed his former creation Proto Man (under the alias Break Man) attacks him. He made quick work of Robot Masters Bomb Man, Guts Man and Cut Man.

Protoman fights Mega Man and is about to defeat him, only for the latter to plead to spared so that his "father" Dr.Light's heart won't be broken. Break Man is about to depart until Mega Man grabs a hold to unmask him. Before either can do anything further, the Genesis Wave struck. (WC #0)

Worlds Collide
After the Genesis Wave subsided, Dr. Light was seen being assisted by Rock as he was building a new Robot Master named Bond Man in the Light Labs, but before they could begin, Roll had ran inside the laboratory to notify that Proto Man is fighting against four new "Robot Masters", which were, in reality, the Roboticized Masters. Mega Man, realizing the situation calls for it, switches to his Blue Bomber form and transports his way to Mega City. He saves Proto Man from nearly being crushed by the Robotcized Masters, and the two transport on a rooftop. Proto Man informs Mega Man that the Roboticized Masters have a gem (which is, in reality, a Chaos Emerald) that they stole from the bank, to which Mega Man decides to chase after them and get the gem back.

Dr. Light appeared again when an injured Protoman teleported to Light Labs. An overjoyed Dr. Light greeted him, but Proto Man maintained his distance from his creator as he provided him with the data drive containing his info on the ring. Roll, recognizing the damage he had suffered, persuaded him to let her repair him-with no involvement from Dr. Light-so that he could rejoin the battle more quickly. Proto Man's repairs were completed just in time, as the lab was attacked by Metal Sonic and Bass, who managed to capture Dr. Light but were prevented from doing any serious damage by Proto Man's efforts. The two villains escaped with their captive just as Mega Man arrived with new friends Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails, the latter having been restored to his original form following his transformation into Tails Man. With Proto Man's input, the Fox was able to create another Warp Ring to take them where the evil robots had gone. Sonic and Tails volunteered to join Mega Man in the rescue mission, and Proto Man joined in and suggested bringing Rush as well. Assured that the lab would be safe in their absence-especially since Dr. Light had managed to contact their old ally Duo before being captured. The band of heroes then passed through the portal into the Skull Egg Zone. Once inside, they quickly ran into more trouble in the form of Copy Robot and the Genesis Unit. Proto Man squared off with Mega Water S, and was briefly kept at bay by his attacks, but managed to strike back. Once his teammates had dealt with their own opponents, Proto Man was able to finish off Mega Water as he attempted to flee the battle. Despite their victory, the two robot brothers were concerned, explaining to Tails and Sonic that they had previously destroyed the four robots who had just attacked them, and that the loss of their Integrated Circuits should have meant their permanent end. After discussing the implications, the group moved on, only to run into Dr. Wily, Dr. Eggman, and their remaining force of Roboticized Masters. (SU: #52, MM: #25)

Dr. Light was searched for by his creation Protoman who had separated from Sonic and Mega Man.Dr. Light was later discovered to being held hostage in the Willy Egg base. To make matters worse, Dr. Light was later dropped from the Wily Egg, with no one close enough to rescue him physically. Fortunately, Shadow was able to rescue him using Chaos Control, who brought him to Proto Man. After informing Mega Man that their father was unhurt, Proto Man lent Light his helmet so that he could talk to Mega Man directly, and then defended him from Gemini Man. (StH: #250, SU: #54, MM: #27)

When the other Robot Masters created by Dr. Light arrived to aid the heroes, Proto Man recruited Knuckles the Echidna, Rush, and Dr. Light to help him board the Wily Egg and learn the fate of Sonic and Mega Man. Finding the pair at the mercy of Eggman and Wily, Knuckles and Proto Man went on the offensive while Light and Rush freed the captured pair. Knuckles and Proto Man pressed their assault, causing heavy damage to the Egg-Wily Machine X that was aided by the doctors' mutual sabotage. Unfortunately, the doctors got their mech back up and running and were able to draw energy from the Genesis Reactor, repairing their damage and greatly increasing the machine's power. Proto Man and Knuckles were forced to retreat with Dr. Light in tow, but their efforts bought Sonic and Mega Man time needed to absorb some energy from the reactor themselves. Super Mega Man and Super Sonic thus took up the fight, while Proto Man and his companions came across Bass, Treble, and Metal Sonic just before the Super Genesis Wave washed over them all. With the doctors' defeat, Super Mega Man then reversed the effects of both waves, returning Proto Man and the rest of the inhabitants of Earth 20XX to their proper places in reality. Doctor Thomas Light, the creator of Mega Man. He was once an old friend, and is now my biggest rival.

Dr. Wily, Sonic the Hedgehog #248

Appearance

History

Worlds Collide

Prelude

After the Genesis Wave subsided, Light got the feeling that he was forgetting something about his past, but put it aside while working on Bond Man. He, alongside Rock and Roll also witnessed a breaking news report regarding the Mega City Federal Reserve being attacked by four unidentified robots, with Proto Man fighting against them. Mega Man later informed him of a strange portal that appeared when a strange blue blur appeared and had the other robots escape as he entered the portal in pursuit.[1] A damaged Proto Man later arrived at Light Labs with information on the Warp Ring, and to Light's relief allowed Roll to take him aside for repairs. He also was contacted by Time Man about a time-space anomaly, and sent a message requesting Duo's aid in solving the spacial imbalance.[2]

LightBat

Dr. Light meets Rouge the Bat, from Mega Man #26.

Dr. Light eventually was kidnapped by Bass and Metal Sonic under the orders of Wily and his new partner, Dr. Eggman and taken to the Wily Egg in the Skull Egg Zone pocket dimension, although not before creating a recreation of the Warp Ring to allow Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man to enter Mega City.[2][3] From there, Light was held prisoner in the Wily Egg and learned that Dr. Wily and Eggman had rewritten their universes with the Genesis Wave in an effort to defeat their blue enemies. While enduring gloating from the evil doctors, Light also supplied information to Rouge the Bat regarding the Wily Egg's weakpoint.[4][5] As Wily and Eggman's Robot Master Army fought Mega man and his allies, Light was nearly killed by a Motobug and Mettaur, although they destroyed themselves by accident due to their bumping into each other. He thus attempted to convince Wily and Eggman of the foolishness of their plans to reshape the universe, reminding both scientists of various instances when they had attempted similar things. Unfortunately, his references to other threats were dismissed by both doctors.[6]

Dr

Dr. Light falling to his doom, from Sonic the Hedgehog #250.

Thomas was later thrown out by Eggman into the crater beneath the Wily Egg, largely because Eggman deduced how much of a threat he was to his and Wily's plans,[6] but was saved by Shadow the Hedgehog's Chaos Control. Light examined him but due to his lack of medical experience was unable to do much for the heroic young Fox.[7] After Light's original Light Robot Masters arrived as the cavalry, Light, Knuckles, Rush, and Proto Man, having deduced that Mega Man and Sonic ran into trouble, infiltrated the Wily Egg themselves while the Robot Masters provided cover. Light to his proper place in time.[8]

Worlds Unite

Light with Masters

Dr. Light with the Robot Masters, from Sonic Boom #8.

After the apparent death of Dr. Wily after his most recent scheme that left Light Labs in ruin, Dr. Light soon had Light Labs back up and running with the aid of the Light Robot Masters.[9] Unfortunately, Mega Man disappeared while on a supply run, and Sonic Man appeared and attacked Mega City. Sadly, both they and Break Man failed to overcome the threat, and Sonic Man activated a Unity Engine that began merging Earth with Sonic's World.[10][11] This led to an encounter between Dr. Light and his robotic allies and the Freedom Fighters, who were soon joined by X and the Maverick Hunters and Team Sticks.[12]

Legacy

Some years into the future, Dr. Light created an even more advanced type of robot with the capacity for human emotion. Dubbing his creation Mega Man X, Light placed him in a protective capsule that would analyze his systems and insure that they wouldn't break down, doing so because the process would take longer than he had left and he had no successors to carry on his work. X would later be awakened in the year 21XX-a century after the time of Mega Man-and become the template for a new race of robots, the Reploids. X made it his mission to fulfill Light's dream, but would face difficulty in the rise of the Mavericks, a group of robots who turned against humanity due to infection by a virus and through conscious rebellion against their creators.[13]

Personality

Dr. Light is a brilliant scientist and an expert in terms of robotics and machinery. He is capable of cobbling together useful gadgetry from even the meanest spare parts, and while he abhors violence is a capable shot.

Trivia

 • Dr. Light's first name is derived from famous inventor Thomas Edison. His last name "Light" could also be seen as an allusion to the fact that Edison was known for creating the light bulb. In Japan he is known as "Dr. Right."
