— Doctor Ivo Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog

Doctor Robotnik[1] is the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog film. He is an eccentric scientist that plots to capture Sonic the Hedgehog in order to drain and neutralize his powers.

Appearance

Spoiler warning: Plot, ending details or any kind of information follow.

Dr. Robotnik is an average sized man with dark brown (almost black) hair, peach skin, brown eyes and a mustache. His hair was usually combed back, and his mustache was usually thin and dark brown (almost black) with handlebar curls at the ends. For attire, he was usually seen wearing a black trench coat, black trousers, black shoes, black gloves and black sunglasses.

For attire, he later dons a red flight suit and black goggles with red lenses. Not much later, however, he has a significantly different appearance: he has shaved his head completely, his moustache is overgrown and unkempt and his suit is tattered and torn.

Early Life

Robotnik grew up as an orphan, causing him to resent family. In school, Robotnik was punched in the face by the resident bully, humiliating him. Instead of reporting him to the principal, Robotnik achieved revenge through technological means, causing the bully to spend the next three years eating through a straw.

History

Spoiler warning: Plot, ending details or any kind of information follow.

After Sonic accidentally causes an electromagnetic pulse, resulting in a massive power outage, the United States Department of Defense elects to dispatch Dr. Robotnik to resolve the matter quickly and quietly.

Upon arrival at the site, Robotnik immediately pulls rank and belittles Major Bennington. Robotnik then initiates a preliminary sweep of a ten mile radius using his drones. One of them finds a footprint left by Sonic, and Robotnik analyzes it and determines that it is from a creature outside all known species, becoming very excited as he does so.

Robotnik is able to trace Sonic's energy signature to Tom's house. Initially posing as a representative from the power company while secretly sending drones into the house, Robotnik is tricked by Tom into giving himself away. Robotnik then forces his way into the house after Sonic makes a commotion fleeing from the drones. Robotnik then finds Sonic's quill, and orders a drone to target Wachowski, threatening to kill him in five seconds if he does not reveal Sonic's location. When Sonic reveals himself, Robotnik screams in surprise, and is knocked out by Wachowski. When Sonic and Tom flee, Robotnik berates Agent Stone for not pursuing them and instead checking on the doctor's well-being. Robotnik then orders Stone to bring the quill with them.

Later, when Tom calls the Green Hills Police Station, Robotnik and his agents are present and monitoring the call. Robotnik then takes over the call and proceeds to threaten Wachowski, only for Tom to hang up.

After interrogating a bar patron Sonic had previously injured and determining their location, Robotnik sends a tank drone to intercept them. After Sonic destroys it, Robotnik has a smaller robot eject from the wreckage and continue the pursuit. Sonic proceeds to destroy it with its own EMP mines. Then a single-wheeled robot emerges, only for Tom destroy it, angering Robotnik. A tiny helicopter drone ejects from the remains, and manages to surgically remove the top half of the truck before Sonic snaps it in half. In a last-ditch effort, the drone's eye becomes a sticky bomb and attaches itself to Sonic's glove. Sonic and Tom are able to remove the bomb, but Sonic is rendered unconscious in the explosion.

Robotnik, outraged at having been bested again, proceeds to vent his frustrations on Agent Stone, but notices the energy emanating from Sonic's quill. Analyzing it, Robotnik discovers that it has an unlimited energy supply, and orders Agent Stone to prepare "The Prototype".

Later, Robotnik, sporting a red flight suit and black goggles, intercepts Sonic, Maddie, and Tom before Sonic can teleport himself to the mushroom planet. Using Sonic's quill, Robotnik's vehicle achieves supersonic speed, and almost prevents Sonic from getting the Wachowskis to safety. Dubbing his adversary "Eggman", Sonic leads Robotnik on a chase around the world with his rings, going through Paris, China, and Egypt, before returning to Green Hills.

Robotnik finally manages to hit Sonic with an energy blast, critically injuring him. While Robotnik gloats, Tom uses a ring to get behind the doctor and surprise him. The two engage in a fistfight until Robotnik manages to throw Tom off of his hovercraft. As Robotnik prepares to kill Tom and Maddie, Sonic succumbs to his wounds. Robotnik prepares to depart with the body, but is stopped by the residents of Green Hill, headed by Tom and Maddie. Tom berates Robotnik for his heartlessness, declaring Sonic to be his friend. Hearing this, Sonic's emotions cause his power to peak, reviving him.

Tired of running from danger, Sonic vows to protect his friends and attempts to reclaim his stolen power from the quill, but Robotnik retaliates and fires a volley of seeker missiles at the hedgehog. Using his power, Sonic attacks the machine at lightspeed velocity, bombarding it with spin attacks and critically damaging it. Not wanting to leave his friends behind, Sonic instead uses a ring to banish "Eggman" to the mushroom planet, destroying his hovercraft in the process.

Unfortunately, Robotnik is revealed to have survived, his head shaven and his moustache overgrown and unkempt. His sanity completely disintegrated, Robotnik's only companion is a stone which he names after his former underling and subjects to similar abuse. Equipped with nothing but salvaged parts from the wreckage, his wrist device, and Sonic's energized quill, Robotnik declares "I'll be home by Christmas" and proceeds to trek across the mushroom planet, chucking "Agent Stone" ahead of himself and laughing maniacally.

Personality

Allow me to clarify: in a sequentially-ranked hierarchy based on level of critical importance, the disparity between us is too vast to quantify.

— Robotnik describing his superiority to Bennington, Sonic the Hedgehog

Dr. Robotnik's high intellect makes him somewhat of a narcissist, as he immediately declared himself to be superior to Bennington. He is also somewhat eccentric, as while talking to said military officer, he briefly moves stiffly and makes robotic noises as he does so. He prides himself in being prepared for any situation, and refuses to admit surprise. He also enjoys dancing wildly when he believes he is alone, and loves the lattes prepared by his lapdog, Agent Stone. Additionally, due to his high intellect, he is capable of using large and complicated words to describe a simple situation. Robotnik is not one who tolerates failure, and is very quick to lose his temper when it occurs (yelling quite frequently as he does so).

Described as "pure, unbridled evil"[2], Robotnik is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, as evidenced by the numerous lethal drones that he sends after both Sonic and Tom Wachowski.

Robotnik suffers from a severe inferiority complex, which stems from childhood neglect. As a result, he sees himself as an insignificant speck, and yearns for acknowledgement and recognition.

An egomaniacal sociopathic misanthrope, Robotnik often voices his distaste for humanity, only displaying affection towards his machines, gently stroking and praising them. He is completely devoid of empathy, unable to understand why Tom would risk everything to help Sonic, and proudly states that he has no friends. Robotnik hates everybody, and barely tolerates Agent Stone, often subjecting him to physical and emotional abuse. However, he does compliment Stone on his lattes, albeit very aggressively. Robotnik is also incredibly sadistic, seizing any opportunity to inflict pain upon other people, and relishing every second.

By the end of the film, Robotnik's sanity has degraded to the point where he is completely obsessed with obtaining Sonic's power by any means necessary. He is even willing to place himself into a life-threatening situation, failing to realize the danger until it is too late.

Powers and abilities

Dr. Robotnik has a high intellect, with an IQ of 300[3]. This enables him to create various types of machinery and robots that obey his command.

Equipment

Dr. Robotnik's primary equipment is a large assortment of drones that he can create. Additionally, at one point in the film, he wears a uniquely-designed controller on his left hand; with a few button presses, he is able to program his drones to search for his target within a ten-mile radius. This controller also has standard internet functions. Robotnik also uses it to record his journal.

Reception

On April 29, 2019, a first look at Jim Carrey's rendition of Doctor Robotnik was leaked, a day before the first trailer got released. Fans and media reacted mostly with surprise at Robotnik's first look.[4][5] On 30 April 2019, the first official trailer for the film was released, as well as its official poster. The trailer received mixed-to-negative reactions from the fans and media, mostly because of Sonic's initial design, however, Jim Carrey as Robotnik received mostly positive reactions, with some fans remarking that he's channeling his '90s era portrayals in a good way, and also that his appearance at the end of the trailer was more similar to Robotnik's game counterpart.[6][7][8]
