Dr. Robotnik's high intellect makes him somewhat of a narcissist, as he immediately declared himself to be superior to [[Major Bennington]] and later stated everyone around him is inferior and less evolved. He is also somewhat eccentric, as while talking to said military officer, he briefly moves stiffly and makes robotic noises as he does so. He prides himself in being prepared for any situation, and refuses to admit surprise. He also enjoys dancing wildly when he believes he is alone, and loves the lattes prepared by his lapdog, Agent Stone. Additionally, due to his high intellect, he is capable of using large and complicated words to describe a simple situation. Robotnik is not one who tolerates failure, and is very quick to lose his temper when it occurs (yelling quite frequently as he does so). He also has a large chip on his shoulder about being bullied as a child, and he hates being punched in the face as it reminds him of how he used to be at the mercy of unintelligent brutes like the school bully.

An egomaniacal sociopathic misanthrope, Robotnik often voices his distaste for humanity, only displaying affection towards his machines, gently stroking and praising them. A staunch perfectionist, Robotnik views humans as inefficient beings of hubris and desire, and robots as practical and functional. Human beings bore the doctor to the state that he considers their lives sad and meaningless and therefore he has no desire for having friends. He is completely devoid of empathy, unable to understand why Tom would risk everything to help Sonic, and proudly states that he has no friends. Robotnik hates everybody, and barely tolerates Agent Stone, often subjecting him to physical and emotional abuse; however, he does compliment Stone on his lattes, albeit very aggressively. Interestingly enough, despite him openly stating that he will not miss Agent Stone, he creates a stand-in of his lackey to keep him company on the mushroom planet. He may not actually like people, but he at least needs someone to abuse. Despite this, he did praise Agent Stone on his cappuccino-making skills, albeit aggressively, so he may possess a tiny degree of compassion.

— Doctor Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog

Doctor Robotnik[1] is the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog film. He is an eccentric scientist that plots to capture Sonic the Hedgehog in order to drain and harness his powers.

Appearance

Spoiler warning: Plot, ending details or any kind of information follow.
SonicMovie IvoRobotnik

Robotnik (without sunglasses) in his original outfit.

Dr. Robotnik is an average sized man with dark brown (almost black) hair, peach skin, brown eyes, a mustache and ample stubble across his jawline. His hair is usually combed back, and his mustache was usually thin and dark brown (almost black) with handlebar curls at the ends. For attire, he was usually seen wearing a black trench coat, black trousers, black shoes, black gloves and black sunglasses.

For attire, he later dons a red flight suit and black goggles with red lenses. After spending nearly three months on the mushroom planet, however, he has a significantly different appearance: he has shaved his head completely, his mustache is overgrown and unkempt, and a more golden-brown color, and his suit is tattered and torn in various places.

Early life

"Nice. Rub that in my orphaned face."
—Robotnik responding to Tom's upbringing

Robotnik grew up as an orphan, causing him to resent family. In school, Robotnik was punched in the face by the resident bully, humiliating him. Instead of reporting him to the principal, Robotnik achieved revenge through technological means, causing the bully to spend the next year eating through a straw.

At some point in his career, he allegedly helped stop several coups in the Middle East.

History

Spoiler warning: Plot, ending details or any kind of information follow.

After Sonic accidentally causes an electromagnetic pulse, resulting in a massive power outage, the United States Department of Defense elects to dispatch Dr. Robotnik to resolve the matter quickly and quietly.

Upon arrival at the site, Robotnik immediately establishes himself as the one in charge, belittling Major Bennington. Robotnik then initiates a preliminary sweep of a ten mile radius using his drones. One of them finds a footprint left by Sonic. Robotnik analyzes it and determines that it is from a creature outside all known species, becoming very excited by his discovery.

Robotnik is able to trace Sonic's energy signature to Tom's house. Initially posing as a representative from the power company while secretly sending drones into the house, Robotnik is tricked by Tom into giving himself away. Robotnik then forces his way into the house after Sonic makes a commotion fleeing from the drones. Robotnik then finds Sonic's quill, and orders a drone to target Wachowski, threatening to kill him in five seconds if he does not reveal Sonic's location. When Sonic reveals himself, Robotnik freaks out, and Wachowski knocks him out. When Sonic and Tom flee, Robotnik berates Agent Stone for not pursuing them and instead checking on the doctor's well-being. Robotnik then orders Stone to bring the quill with them.

Later, when Tom calls the Green Hills Police Station, Robotnik and his agents are present and monitoring the call. Robotnik then takes over the call and proceeds to threaten Wachowski, only for Tom to hang up.

After interrogating a bar patron Sonic had previously injured and determining their location, Robotnik sends a tank drone to intercept them. After Sonic destroys it, Robotnik has a smaller robot eject from the wreckage and continue the pursuit. Sonic proceeds to destroy it with its own EMP mines. Then a single-wheeled robot emerges, only for Tom destroy it, angering Robotnik. A tiny helicopter drone ejects from the remains, and manages to surgically remove the top half of the truck before Sonic snaps it in half. In a last-ditch effort, the drone's eye becomes a sticky bomb and attaches itself to Sonic's glove. Sonic and Tom are able to remove the bomb, but Sonic is rendered unconscious in the explosion.

Robotnik, outraged at having been bested again, proceeds to vent his frustrations on Agent Stone, but notices the energy emanating from Sonic's quill. Analyzing it, Robotnik discovers that it has an unlimited energy supply, and orders Agent Stone to prepare the Eggpod.

Later, Robotnik, sporting a red flight suit and black goggles, intercepts Sonic, Maddie, and Tom before Sonic can teleport himself to the mushroom planet. Using Sonic's quill, Robotnik's vehicle achieves supersonic speed, and almost prevents Sonic from getting the Wachowskis to safety. Dubbing his adversary "Eggman", Sonic leads Robotnik on a chase around the world with his rings, going through Paris, China, and Egypt, before returning to Green Hills.

Robotnik finally manages to hit Sonic with an energy blast, critically injuring him. While Robotnik gloats, Tom uses a ring to get behind the doctor and make a surprise attack. The two engage in a fistfight until Robotnik manages to throw Tom off of his hovercraft. As Robotnik prepares to kill Tom and Maddie, Sonic succumbs to his wounds. Robotnik prepares to depart with the body, but is stopped by the residents of Green Hill, headed by Tom and Maddie. Tom berates Robotnik for his heartlessness, declaring Sonic to be his friend. Hearing this, Sonic's emotions cause his power to peak, reviving him.

Tired of running from danger, Sonic vows to protect his friends and attempts to reclaim his stolen power from the quill, but Robotnik retaliates and fires a volley of seeker missiles at the hedgehog. Using his power, Sonic attacks the machine at lightspeed velocity, bombarding it with spin attacks and critically damaging it. Not wanting to leave his friends behind, Sonic instead uses a ring to banish Robotnik to the mushroom planet, destroying his hovercraft in the process.

Robotnik upon his sanity deteriorating.

Robotnik is revealed to have survived, his head shaven and his mustache overgrown and unkempt. His sanity deteriorating, Robotnik's only companion is a stone which he names after his former underling and subjects to similar abuse. Equipped with nothing but salvaged parts from the wreckage of his prototype craft, his wrist device, and Sonic's energized quill, Robotnik declares "I'll be home by Christmas" and proceeds to trek across the mushroom planet, chucking "Agent Stone" ahead of himself and laughing maniacally.

Personality

Allow me to clarify: in a sequentially-ranked hierarchy based on level of critical importance, the disparity between us is too vast to quantify.

— Robotnik describing his superiority to Major Bennington, Sonic the Hedgehog

Dr. Robotnik's high intellect makes him somewhat of a narcissist, as he immediately declared himself to be superior to Major Bennington and later stated everyone around him is inferior and less evolved. He is so arrogant and condescending that he has told Agent Stone multiple times that "the hardest thing about being the smartest person in the world is that everyone else is stupid". He also has a large chip on his shoulder about being bullied as a child, and he hates being punched in the face as it reminds him of how he used to be at the mercy of unintelligent brutes like the bully who picked on him.

Described as "pure, unbridled evil"[2], Robotnik is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, as evidenced by the numerous lethal drones that he sends after both Sonic and Tom Wachowski. Despite his claims of wanting to improve the world, he is happily aware that he is "evil". For example, he put a label on his light switch that says "evil lab" and dances to the song "Where evil grows". He also has no qualms about the level of destruction he causes, like the damage to San Francisco, the Pyramid of Khafre, and blowing up the Great Sphinx of Giza.

Robotnik suffers from a severe inferiority complex, which stems from childhood neglect. As a result, he sees himself as an insignificant speck, and yearns for acknowledgment and recognition. He often brings up personal accomplishments in order to make himself feel superior, doing this with both Bennington and Tom. He even claims to have been a genius since he was a toddler.

Robotnik is also incredibly sadistic, seizing any opportunity to inflict pain upon other people, and relishing every second. He also shows his sadism by happily talking about how he wants to experiment on Sonic and "see what makes him tick".

By the climax of the film, Robotnik's sanity has degraded to the point where he is completely obsessed with obtaining Sonic's power by any means necessary. He is even willing to place himself into a life-threatening situation, failing to realize the danger until it is too late. Near the end of the film, after spending eighty-seven days alone on the Mushroom Planet, his grip on sanity has degraded even further (despite his claims to the contrary), as he talks to a stone that he named after his former lapdog, and a few mushrooms, as if they were real people.

Powers and abilities

Dr. Robotnik has a high intellect, boasting 5 PhDs and an IQ of 300[3]. This enables him to create various types of highly advanced machinery and robots, which he can then remotely control using buttons on his gloves, or tablets in his mobile fortress. He was able to accurately determine Sonic's exact height, weight and entire skeletal structure based on nothing but a footprint of his (even though said print was found on a rock, and he was wearing shoes at the time). Growing up he was a child prodigy, apparently being able to articulate formulas at breastfeeding age. He is also multilingual, as when examining Sonic's quill glowing with energy, he mutters "omoshiroi" (面白い), the Japanese term for "interesting".

Robotnik is also capable of hand-to-hand combat, and has above-average physical strength, as he managed to hold his own against Tom Wachowski, and throw a large bar patron through a window.

Equipment

SonicMovie Robotnik Controller

Robotnik's controller.

Dr. Robotnik's primary equipment is a large assortment of drones that he has created. His primary mode of transportation on Earth is a self-driving semi-truck that can also house most of his drones, lab equipment, and the Eggpod. At one point he wears a uniquely-designed controller on a glove on his left hand; with a few button presses, he is able to program his drones to search for his target within a ten-mile radius, or secretly dispatch reconnaissance drones into Wachowski's house. This controller also has standard internet functions. A variation of the device is incorporated into the doctor's flight suit. Robotnik later uses it to record his time on the Mushroom planet.

Additionally, despite his usage of highly-advanced technology, Robotnik is not above using more "primitive" forms of technology should the situation demand it. This is seen when he prepares to examine the energy output of Sonic's quill: upon connecting it to a pair of jumper cables, it immediately shorts out the power of his lab, forcing him to rely on the flame of a simple zippo lighter to find the fusebox and restore the power.

Weaknesses

Despite being well-versed in hand-to-hand combat, Robotnik is shown to have low durability, as a single punch to his jaw by Tom was enough to stun him long enough for Tom to escape with Sonic.

Robotnik has a massive ego, but it is also very fragile. As the film progresses, he becomes more unhinged with every defeat, until he is driven completely insane from his plans being foiled.

Relationships

Sonic the Hedgehog

LiveStream

Sonic mocking Robotnik

Originally, Robotnik saw Sonic as a specimen he was eager to dissect and examine. However, after witnessing the hedgehog's personality and abilities firsthand, he sees Sonic as his key to world domination, as well as a defiant, smart-mouthed teenager. Robotnik's resentment of Sonic grows throughout the film as he is continuously bested and embarrassed by the hedgehog. He is greatly irritated by Sonic's mocking jokes and remarks towards him. By the time of the film's climax, he is determined to defeat Sonic no matter the cost, willing to literally destroy anything in the way. After losing some of his sanity, he now seems obsessed with getting revenge on the hedgehog.

According to actor Jim Carrey, Robotnik resents Sonic because he represents the youth and happiness Robotnik never had.

Agent Stone

While Robotnik appreciates what Stone does for him at times, he is shown to treat him with nothing but contempt, even being severely peeved when Stone thought to check on him (after Tom punched him in the face) instead of going after Sonic and Tom. Later on, when Stone comments on Tom and Sonic escaping his drones, Robotnik chides him by saying he will not miss him when he and other humans are replaced with machinery. Eventually, when Robotnik is alone, he creates a stand-in of Agent Stone from a stone to keep him company.

Tom Wachowski

DonutLordVsEggman

Robotnik fighting Tom

Upon meeting Tom Wachowski, Robotnik initially viewed him with the same contempt he holds for humanity. As a seemingly average small-town police officer, Tom represents the "mediocrity" of mankind that Robotnik so despises, and Robotnik greatly underestimates his intelligence. However, he takes a greater disliking towards Tom due to the latter's uncooperativeness. This is further bolstered when Tom punches him in the face, an indignity he had suffered only once before. As Sonic and Tom continue to elude and humiliate him, his vendetta grows. By the end of the film, he holds a deep-seated hatred for the Montana policeman and anyone associated with him, second only to his hatred of Sonic.

Reception

On April 29, 2019, a first look at Jim Carrey's rendition of Doctor Robotnik was leaked, a day before the first trailer got released. Fans and media reacted mostly with surprise at Robotnik's first look.[4][5] On 30 April 2019, the first official trailer for the film was released, as well as its official poster. The trailer received mixed-to-negative reactions from the fans and media, mostly because of Sonic's initial design, however, Jim Carrey as Robotnik received mostly positive reactions, with some fans remarking that he's channeling his '90s era portrayals in a good way, and also that his appearance at the end of the trailer was more similar to Robotnik's game counterpart.[6][7][8]

Trivia

  • Instead of his appearance, Robotnik's nickname of "Eggman" is a result of his Badniks that resemble eggs.
  • Robotnik seems to have a fondness for classical music, as he whistles "Ride of the Valkyries" when summoning a Badnik in the Wachowski residence.
  • In one scene, Robotnik can be seen playing "Where Evil Grows" by The Poppy FamilyW on his personal music playlist called "Tunes of Anarchy". Other songs and playlists seen include, "Robotnik Rhythms", "Everybody Wants to Rule the WorldW", "Soulful Chamber Music of Oppression", "Nuclear Tempos of Rhapsody", "Dinner For One", "Acoustical Tempo for Tyranny", "Heavy Metal Bombing Over Babylon", "Obscure 1970's Canadian Jams", and "Crush 40".
  • In his appearance in Sonic Dash, Robotnik's voice clips are the same as Dr. Eggman's, due to featuring the voice of Mike Pollock instead of Jim Carrey.
  • Robotnik's final scene in the first film is a possible reference to Cast Away, wherein the main character (portrayed by Tom Hanks) creates a companion out of a volleyball to provide him with company on a deserted island.
