For the boss that appears in Act 2, see Doctor Robotnik's Flame Craft (Angel Island Zone Act 2).

Doctor Robotnik’s Flame Craft[1] (ファイヤーブレス[2] Faiyā Buresu?, lit. "Fire Breath") is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced robot model created by Dr. Robotnik and used during the first part of the Angel Island incident.

Description

Appearance

Dr. Robotnik's Flame Crafts are medium-sized spherical robots. They have a dark blue upper half and a black lower half with four rocket thrusters attached to it. They also have three cylinders on top of their back, a thin gray barrel for a flamethrower as a nose of some short on the front, and a gray cylinder for a head that sticks out over its barrel.

Features and abilities

Thanks to their thrusters, the Flame Crafts are capable of flight. They are also equipped with flamethrowers that can spew intense flames and missile launchers that can fire explosive missiles that create widespread fires.

History

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

A group of Flame Crafts burning Angel Island Zone, from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and its lock-on version Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, a group of Flame Crafts invaded and burned down Angel Island Zone when they noticed the presence of Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower on the island. However, the duo survived that fire. A Flame Craft soon after appeared to exterminate the duo on its own. However, it was destroyed by the heroes.

Much later, another group of Flame Crafts came out of nowhere and returned to set the area on fire and burn Knuckles the Echidna to ashes. However, Knuckles came out of this safely, and destroyed a Flame Craft that got in his way.

Other game appearances

Sonic Jam (Game.com)

In Sonic Jam (Game.com), the Flame Craft appears at the end of Angel Island Zone Act 1, throwing missiles at the area and later leaving to end the Act.

Battle

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Flame Craft is battled with Sonic and/or Tails. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, it can also be faced with Knuckles.

Boss guide

When Sonic and/or Tails confront the Flame Craft at the end of Angel Island Zone Act 1, the robot descends into the arena and starts its rather simple attack pattern. After firing its flamethrower once, Flame Breath then rises and flies to the other side of the arena to fire its flamethrower once more. The robot repeats this pattern until it is destroyed. The flames coming from the thrower are the only real danger in this battle, although the small fires coming from jets on its underside can hurt the player as well. After landing six hits on the Flame Craft, the robot explodes into pieces. When the signpost falls down, Invincibility, Flame Shield and Water Shield monitors are hidden underneath the ground, with all of them having a small gap between each other.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles lock-on, while Knuckles is unable to reach the upper section of the level (where Sonic and Tails can fight the Flame Craft), the player instead must go to a lower pathway by destroying huge breakable piles of rocks and face the Flame Craft again. However, the robot's attack pattern is only somewhat challenging, as the Flame Craft is able now to fire three missiles from its launchers, which will fall down to the ground deal damage to the player on contact. Despite that, the robot can still be taken down after six hits. Invincibility, Water Shield and Extra Life monitors are hidden under the bottom of arena, all of which have a small gap between them.

In other media

Archie Comics

An Assaulting Batter Blimp in Archie Comics.

The Flame Craft makes a small appearance in the Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog #13, where the robot is referred to as an Assaulting Batter Blimp. As it attacked Sonic and Tails upon spotting them, the duo escaped into the Hydrocity Zone.[3]

In the timeline created by the Super Genesis Wave, a robot called Flying Dynamo is based on the Flame Craft.

Trivia

  • If the player picks up the Flame Shield from the monitor to the left of the entrance before entering the boss arena, it can make the battle even easier than it already is, as none of Flame Craft's attacks can hurt the player with their Flame Shield (unless the player touches the boss outside of a Spin Attack).
  • It is possible that after defeating the Flame Craft, a glitch may happen to where the player can still go through a huge portion of Angel Island Zone Act 1 instead of going on to Act 2.
