— Dr. Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (film)

Doctor Ivo Robotnik,[11][12] referred to as Eggman by Sonic, is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs. He is an evil and misanthropic human scientist who plots to conquer the multiverse and enslave humanity to force them to service his machines. He is also the arch-enemy of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Originally a United States operative with a revolutionary robot army at his disposal, Dr. Robotnik and his assistant Agent Stone were sent to investigate a power outage originating from Green Hills, Montana. What he found, however, was an extraterrestrial hedgehog named Sonic with incredible powers. After Sonic escaped from him with the aid of Tom Wachowski, Robotnik began hunting Sonic in order to dissect him and uncover the secrets of his power. Upon learning the magnitude of Sonic's power, however, Robotnik set his sights on using Sonic's power to conquer the world. During his final attempt to capture Sonic, he was defeated by the hedgehog and banished to the Mushroom Planet, where he would plot his return.

Months later, Robotnik allied himself with Knuckles the Echidna to take revenge on Sonic, although his plans changed when he discovered the existence of the Master Emerald and sought to obtain its power by manipulating Knuckles. After obtaining the Master Emerald, the doctor used his newfound power to start his plans of conquest and have his genius recognized across reality until Sonic and his team defeated him, leaving his current whereabouts and living status unknown.

Appearance[]

Dr. Robotnik is an average-sized human. He originally possessed dark brown (almost black) hair, light peach skin, brown eyes, a short mustache and ample stubble across his jawline. His hair was usually combed back, and his mustache was usually thin and dark brown (almost black) with handlebar curls at the ends. For attire, he usually wore a black trench coat with customized tails and red piping, a dark grey tunic, black trousers, black shoes, black control gloves, small rectangular sunglasses and a pair of black Robotnik Control Gloves. When later piloting his Eggpod, he donned a red flight suit with black, maroon and redish gray accents with matching fingerless gloves, black shoes, and black conjoined welding-like suction goggles having red photochromic lenses that alter to orange, yellow or black.

After spending nearly 3 months alone on the Mushroom Planet, Robotnik adopted a significantly different appearance: he shaved his head completely bald, he let his mustache become overgrown, unkempt, and more mahogany in color, his nose gained a notable pinkish-red sunburn, one of the lenses on his goggles were broken, and the sleeves of his flight suit had been torn off. Additionally, his eyes are more sunken with dark circles around them, and have notable wrinkles and dark circles around them which was likely due to all the stress he had on the said planet. Overtime, his flightsuit got dirtier and darker, and his moustache got greasier as a result of his lack of hygiene.

After escaping the Mushroom Planet with Knuckles' help, Robotnik cleaned himself up and changed his outfit, wearing a red and black overcoat with a high collar having four triangular golden buttons at the front, black pants, black shoes with golden lines at the front and new Robotnik Control Gloves similar to the ones he was first seen wearing in his debut. He most likely replaced his old damaged goggles with a new pair being the same to his previous ones (with some detail added at the sides). He also wears a black shirt underneath.

When transforming into his Emerald form, his attire turns all black with green accents and the lenses of his goggles turn into blue or green.

After spending unknown amount of time in hiding, Robotnik has overgrown hair and a mustache, one of the lenses of his goggles were cracked (just like what happened to his previous pair), he also gained some obesity and wore a red dressing gown alongside a white vest and stone gray jogging bottoms and his eyes look alot more depraved than before. After that, Agent Stone shaved all his hair of his head, trimmed his mustache back to the way it was previously, and gave him a new pair of suction goggles that can bend (which his previous pairs could possibly do) identical to his usual pair, albeit this time with aqua-ish green photochromic lenses that can alter to either blue or black. After that, he still gained his previous jacket, albeit it was all worn and torn up from the previous battle and continues to wear it when going on his mission with Sonic, although he will more than highly likely get new attire to replace his damaged set. He even ripped off Agent Stone's shirt to create his own since he needed room for his fat belly.

Personality[]

Allow me to clarify: in a sequentially-ranked hierarchy based on level of critical importance, the disparity between us is too vast to quantify.

— Dr. Robotnik describing his superiority to Major Bennington, Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

Dr. Robotnik is a malevolent human who has been described as "pure, unbridled evil"[13] and a "psychological tire fire". Usually, he comes across as an assertive and self-confident person who does not let his convictions waver in the face of others. However, his genius intellect makes him very narcissistic and is considered the smartest being on the planet (which he happily and heavily admits). Notably, he will declare himself the head of any operation he is involved on, voicing out his supposed superiority to those he comes across without hesitation or consideration, and viewing everyone else around him as inferior and basic. Arrogant and condescending, he thinks that the hardest thing about being "the smartest person in the world is that everyone else is stupid". He similarly prides himself on his intellect, and refuses to acknowledge surprise, instead falling back on the excuse that his movements of surprise do not count since he is "expecting not to expect something." These traits mainly stem from Robotnik's own severe inferiority complex, which originate from childhood neglect. As a result, he sees himself as an insignificant speck, and yearns for acknowledgment and recognition. This often results in him bringing up personal accomplishments in order to make himself feel superior. Robotnik really hates society as a result of not being nutured, loved, or guidance in his early life, and that's what he's become the epitome of that, and hates the world so much that it ''abandoned him''. He also wants to be so special to everyone and ''the king of everyone'' and feels the need to conquer those who betrayed him.[14]

Robotnik is also characterized by his quite eccentric behavior. This includes sudden mood swings, mimicking robotic noises and movements, using large and complicated words in conversations to describe a simple situation, and dancing wildly to his own scenarios when he believes he is alone. He also has a huge love for Lattes with steamed Austrian goat milk.

Robotnik is not one who tolerates failure and is very quick to lose his temper when it occurs, which prompts his violent mood swings. Lacking any concern about morality and collateral damage to boot, Robotnik is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, as evidenced by the numerous lethal measures he took to capture Sonic and get rid of anyone helping him, and the destruction he caused to San Francisco and the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Despite his claims of wanting to improve the Earth, he is happily aware that he is "evil" and thus wishes to achieve improvement the way he envisions it, having for example put a label on his lab's light switch that says, "evil lab". He also has a large chip on his shoulder about being bullied as a child and hates being reminded of how he used to be at the mercy of unintelligent brutes.

Robotnik also has an incredibly sadistic streak, seizing any opportunity to inflict pain upon other people, and relishing every second of it. Notably, he would happily talk about how he wanted to dissect Sonic and "see what makes him tick", and smiled as he threatened to kill Tom while interrogating him and reciting the US Code.

Despite Robotnik's over the top and silly personality, there are some rare times where he gets takes it serious albeit also in anger with an example being as to when Sonic damaged his Eggpod in their first final battle causing the former to angrily grind his teeth at the hedgehog and furiously charged at him.

An egomaniacal and sociopathic misanthrope, Robotnik, as said above, often voices his distaste for humanity, viewing human beings as inefficient creatures of hubris and desire. Humans similarly bore the doctor to the state that he considers their lives meaningless and therefore he has no desire for having friends, which he is proud of not to have. Robotnik is similarly completely devoid of empathy for any lifeform, be they humans, animals, or those in-between, being unable to understand why Tom would risk everything to help Sonic, and hunting Sonic in order dissect him for his own scientific inquiries. As such, Robotnik hates everybody around him, although he is shown to barely tolerate Agent Stone, whom he compliments for his lattes, albeit very aggressively, and intellect.[15] Due to his arrogance and having a mindset based on science and computational thinking, Dr. Robotnik sees human society as a computer system and people as programmable toy monkeys, with his approach to both aspects being based science and how to methodically rewrite such "programs" in his own favor without regard for the moral implications.[15] Interestingly enough however, despite Dr. Robotnik openly stating that he would not miss Agent Stone during the San Francisco incident, he did create a stand-in of his lackey to keep him company on the Mushroom Planet. This may imply either that he does desire human company on some level, or that he just needs someone to abuse.

Owning to his hatred of humanity and being a staunch perfectionist, Robotnik values only robotics, which he sees as practical and functional since they always follow their programming and do what they are told. He is especially proud of his Badnik drones, which he displays affection for and praises them for being relentless and effective. In his own words, his machines are everything to him, and he considers them to be a part of the further evolution of humanity.

Over the course of his hunt for Sonic's power, Robotnik's sanity would degrade to the point where he became completely obsessed with obtaining Sonic's power by any means necessary, eventually becoming willing to place himself in life-threatening situations where he would fail to realize the danger until it was too late.

After spending almost 3 months alone on the Mushroom Planet, his grip on sanity would degrade even further despite his claims to the contrary, as he would talk to a stone as if it was a real person. Eventually, after spending over 8 months on the Mushroom Planet, the prolonged isolation has had a significant negative effect on the doctor's psyche, with his sanity having nearly completely disintegrated, and losing what little control and restraint he had, acting completely erratic and psychotic.

Robotnik is also treacherous, which ultimately lead to his downfall; right after he managed to gain access to the Master Emerald, Knuckles, whom he betrayed for the Emerald, formed an alliance with Sonic and Tails and helped to deprive Robotnik of the Master Emerald.

After spending unknown amount of time in hiding, as Robotnik's fat belly suggests, Robotnik has a new trait of being lazy as he was lying on a chair leaving piles of (possibly fast food he was eating) rubbish around in his lab and not bothering to clean it up. As revealed when he finds his grandfather Gerald Robotnik in the lab, he was shown to deeply love him and gave him a huge hug, which likely means Robotnik isn't completely selfish and may in fact care for his family. In fact, he seems to have softened significantly overall in his seclusion, even agreeing to help Team Sonic save the world as opposed to dominating it.[16]

Powers and abilities[]

SonicMovie Badniks

Dr. Robotnik has a genius intellect, boasting 5 PhDs and an IQ of 300.[17] Growing up, he was a child prodigy, apparently being able to articulate formulas around the time Tom was an infant. In adulthood, his intellect has enabled him to create various types of highly advanced and revolutionary remote-controlled machinery and robot drones. He is so intelligent in fact that he was able to accurately determine Sonic's exact height, weight and entire skeletal structure based on nothing but a footprint of his, and determine and harness the power of Sonic's alien biology. He has also been expertly trained to spot tracks by the Native American Shadow Wolves. He is also multilingual, being able to speak at least English, Japanese,[18] and French, and possibly more. He also has keen vehicle intuition, being able to expertly pilot his Eggpod through the narrow streets of San Francisco at speeds compatible to Sonic's while taking accurate shots at Sonic.

Robotnik also has impressive survival skills. After being stranded on the Mushroom Planet with nothing but his wrist device and the scrap of his Eggpod, he was able to survive for 8 months and built complex booby-traps, an interplanetary signal beacon, and other complex contraptions, primarily using the local fungi. Despite his skinny bodytype, Robotnik also appears to be quite a strong man as he was able to directly punch an oversized man out of the window without even trying, although in some occasions he somewhat struggled to lift a heavy rock.

Equipment[]

SonicMovie Robotnik Controller

Dr. Robotnik wears a uniquely designed controller on the glove of his left hand; with a few buttons presses and finger-thumb movements, he is able to program and command his technology, or secretly and non-verbally control his machines. This controller also has standard internet functions. A variation of this device was later incorporated into the doctor's flight suit, which sported a radio recorder and a date counter.

Transformation[]

By harnessing the power of the Master Emerald, Robotnik can attain a higher state of being. Described as all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-seeing in this form, Robotnik possesses the ability to turn thought into reality while in this state, allowing him to perform various reality-bending feats that include, but are not limited to, telekinesis, heighted senses, flight, energy manipulation, teleportation, and technokinesis,

Weaknesses[]

Robotnik is shown to have low durability, as a single punch to the face from Tom was enough to stun him long enough for Tom to escape with Sonic.

Robotnik also has a massive, but very fragile ego. As his hunt for Sonic continued, he became more unhinged with every defeat, until he was driven completely insane from his plans being foiled. He is also very cocky.

After his first defeat at Sonic's hands, Robotnik has also developed an obsessive hatred of the hedgehog which can be used against him, as seen when Sonic got the doctor to focus all of his attention on him by taunting him.

Relationships[]

I like the new look. It works for you. What do you say we just let bygones be bygones? I did some things, you did some things. There are good people on both sides. Surely two intelligent beings... can work these things out!

— Dr. Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

Sonic the Hedgehog is Robotnik's arch-enemy whom he loathes with a passion. Dr. Robotnik resents Sonic in particular because he represents the youth and happiness the doctor himself never had.[19]

Originally shocked upon seeing Sonic in person, Robotnik soon came to see Sonic as a specimen he was eager to dissect and examine for his own benefits. However, after discovering the true potential of Sonic's abilities and the hedgehog's juvenile behavior, he saw Sonic as both his key to world domination, as well as a defiant, smart-mouthed teenager. Dr. Robotnik's resentment of Sonic likewise grew throughout his first encounters as he was continuously bested and embarrassed by Sonic, whose attitude, irritating jokes and self-confidence that rivaled Robotnik's own ego. He was likewise greatly irritated by Sonic's mocking jokes and remarks towards him, seeing his confidence as a fool's substitute for intelligence and believing that he should not stand a chance against his intellect. By the time of his first personal battle with Sonic, Robotnik was determined to defeat him no matter the cost and seize his power for himself, being willing to literally destroy anything and anyone who got in his way. Regardless, he did have a small measure of respect for Sonic, having called him an "astonishing little creature".

After stewing in hatred for 8 months on the Mushroom Planet, Robotnik made it one of his foremost goals to get revenge on Sonic, seemingly abandoning his desire to harness the hedgehog's power in favor of simply destroying him, a goal of which is almost on the same level as his desire for conquest of the multiverse and the enslavement of the human race. However, his obsession with Sonic inadvertently became Robotnik's greatest weakness, as his desire to defeat the hedgehog and show his superiority, despite the constant jokes and taunts, tend to make Robotnik so obsessively focused on Sonic that he fails to realize any other threats around him, which ultimately leads to his own defeats.

After his first conflict with Sonic, Robotnik has grown to fear the hedgehog, or at least his power, as evidenced by his uneasiness at the Labyrinth when Sonic prepared to fight. His fear was mostly shown when he was terrified when he saw Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and tried to trick him with his last efforts to try to kill him with the Giant Eggman Robot, but ended up being defeated.

During the Project Shadow incident, it is revealed that the two enemies had no choice but to team up to save the world.

Agent Stone[]

SM2 RevengeOnTheHedgehog

Thank you, sycophant. Your admiration is inevitable.

Dr. Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

While Robotnik appreciates what Agent Stone does for him at times, he is shown treating him with nothing but contempt most of the time, even being severely peeved when Agent Stone thought to check on him (after Tom punched him in the face) instead of going after Sonic and Tom. Later on, when Agent Stone comments on Sonic and Tom escaping Robotnik's drones, Robotnik chides him by saying he will not miss him when he and other humans are replaced with machinery. After losing all his sanity on the Mushroom Planet, Robotnik created a stand-in of Agent Stone from a stone to keep him company, though throwing and mocking it as he did with his lapdog. Also, despite Agent Stone's firm loyalty towards him, Robotnik only sees him as person to push around or take advantage of. At some points though, there is a certain bond between; while Agent Stone himself admires Robotnik, the doctor loves his Austrian goat milk latte. After his return from exile, Robotnik appeared more appreciative of Agent Stone and treated him substantially better than before. Also, in addition to having Agent Stone accompany him as his co-pilot onboard the Giant Eggman Robot, Robotnik would eagerly listen to his praise, although he did so with apathy while recognizing Agent Stone as a bootlicker. He also displays at least a sliver of care for Agent Stone's well-being, as evidenced by his concern when Agent Stone was knocked unconscious.

While Robotnik sees Agent Stone as inferior to him in every way, he nonetheless recognizes him as practically a genius in comparison to regular humans. Seeing Agent Stone as doomed without him, Dr. Robotnik created a contingency plan for Agent Stone in the form of his manifesto so that Agent Stone could survive in his absence. However, rather out of care for Agent Stone, it was more on the grounds of allowing Agent Stone to rebuild himself into a tool of pure science so that he could rebuild Robotnik's own glory on a massive scale that he would provide Agent Stone with such instructions.[15]

Tom Wachowski[]

DonutLordVsEggman

Robotnik fighting Tom, from Sonic the Hedgehog (film).

Upon meeting Tom Wachowski, Dr. Robotnik immediately viewed him with the same contempt he holds for humanity: a nobody who thinks they are something special because of their own personal achievements. As a seemingly average small-town police officer, Tom represents the "mediocrity" of humankind that Dr. Robotnik so despises, prompting Robotnik to consider him an enemy. Robotnik similarly treats all of Tom's achievements lightly. However, it also leads to him greatly underestimating Tom's intelligence and cunning. He would also take a greater disliking towards Tom due to the latter's uncooperativeness and how he outsmarted him in their first meeting. This was further bolstered when Tom punched him in the face, an indignity he had suffered only once before, and successfully helped Sonic escape him in their first encounter. As Sonic and Tom continued to elude and humiliate him, his vendetta for Tom would grow. By the time he cornered Tom and his associates on top of the Transamerica Pyramid, he would hold a deep-seated hatred for Tom, and anyone associated with him, second only to his hatred of Sonic, and wants him to die as much as he wishes for Sonic.

In his time on Mushroom Planet, Robotnik's hatred towards Sonic and the Wachowskis increased. When confronted by G.U.N. agents, Robotnik met Tom again, nicknamed him "Pastry King" and defied their taunts following his empowerment with the Master Emerald. Robotnik celebrated happily after believing he crushed Sonic and the Wachowskis with the Giant Eggman Robot, but the family Wachowski managed to survive, causing Robotnik to be defeated by Super Sonic.

Knuckles the Echidna[]

SM2 BackstagePass

Oh, you poor, naïve creature. It's not your fault. A more advanced intellect would have seen this move coming a mile away. Or 1.6 kilometers.

— Dr. Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

When he first ran into Knuckles the Echidna, Dr. Robotnik saw him as a threat. When he realized that he also wanted revenge on Sonic however, he would eagerly help get him to Earth, in exchange for getting him off of the Mushroom Planet. While Dr. Robotnik would (sarcastically) declare himself and Knuckles best friends "forever and ever" after that, his true intentions was to use Knuckles to humiliate Sonic. When he later found out about the existence of the Master Emerald, he used Knuckles as his unknowing lackey to take him to the Emerald so he could seize its power for himself.

When it came to his treatment of Knuckles, Robotnik treated Knuckles like a pet, such as when he suggested sticking his head out from his Egg Mobile. Also, while Robotnik would pretend to be polite and benevolent in his presence, he considered Knuckles to be an imbecile. He also took no consideration of Knuckles' unfavorable opinion about his lack of loyalty towards Agent Stone.

When on the cusp of acquiring the power of the Master Emerald, Robotnik remorselessly betrayed Knuckles by showing his true intentions while mocking the echidna with a "lesson" about the latter's own lack of intellect and how friends make others weak. From then on, with the Echidna having befriended Sonic after the scientist's betrayal, Robotnik and Knuckles would view and treat each other as enemies.

Miles "Tails" Prower[]

Although Robotnik never directly interacted with Tails until the final battle, it is apparent that he views the fox in the same light as his other enemies. However, he does acknowledge Tails' intelligence (which he sees as vastly inferior to his own), being impressed by the fox's maneuver to save Sonic and evade Knuckles.

Wade Whipple[]

SM2 SitDown

Dr. Robotnik orders Wade to sit down, from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film).

You just sit there and be "u"... seless.

— Dr. Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

Dr. Robotnik actively refused to take Wade Whipple seriously, considering him insignificant in his hunt for Sonic and Tom Wachowski, calling him "Officer Brainfart", and then berating him for doing "nothing" in his job as deputy sheriff. He also doesn't openly acknowledge either of their previous meetings when he appears at Mean Bean Coffee Café, instead pointing out that Wade "smells like a snack plate". Robotnik became an enemy of Wade when the latter threatened him at gunpoint to save Sonic and Tom, but when he acquired new powers thanks to the Master Emerald, Robotnik humiliated Wade by poetically having him sit in the same chair that Stone was in.

The Buyer[]

Willoughby: Wait, so... You've worked for Robotnik?
The Buyer: I did, until the day he met a little blue alien and lost his big bald mind.

Agent Willoughby and the Buyer, "Reno, Baby"

The Buyer used to work directly under Robotnik back when the doctor worked for Guardian Units of Nations, long before it was even called that then. He had some respect for the doctor, claiming that he was very brilliant, although he also claimed that Robotnik was very difficult to work with. After Robotnik went rogue, his buyer came to think of him as insane, claiming that Robotnik had lost his "big bald" mind.
