...Oh-ho-ho! Can I make an evil robot or what?

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special

Doctor Eggman is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. He is a human and Dr. Eggman's counterpart from another dimension set in the recent past, where he is an evil scientist with ambitions of conquering and ruling the world with his robotic creations.

Dr. Eggman is an obese, tall human with a small, bald head with a pinkish nose and a bushy, mahogany-colored mustache. he has a totally spherical torso with thin but proportionate arms and legs. For attire, he wears a red top with a short yellow cape, attached to his shoulders by a triangular collar, black pants with attached boots and a pair of large silver buttons on the front, white globes, and mirrored pince-nez glasses.

For several years, Eggman's Badniks have bothered him on his birthday by throwing him unwanted birthday parties and giving him shabby gifts which Eggman would deem nothing but nonsense. Despite Eggman telling his Badniks to stop throwing him birthday parties time and time again however, it would only encourage them to continue.[1]

Needing a chief commander to manage his Badniks so he could focus more on inventing, researching and slacking off, Eggman rebuilt Heavy King. However, because Eggman programmed Heavy to be deceitful and conquest-driven, the robot plotted to betray Eggman and seize power. During on night in particular, Heavy King tried to strike Eggman while he slept, but was saved by Metal Sonic. Eventually though, Eggman got kicked out of his base in Winter Caverns Zone by his foremost robot minions after Heavy King took control of them. With Heavy King going after the Chaos Emeralds next, Eggman hired Fang and his gang to find the gems first withut revealing any details.[2]

Seasons of Chaos

While in Autumn Forest Zone, Eggman was pursuing Metal Sonic in his Egg Mobile in an attempt to trigger a close-ranged, remote-controlled jamming signal that would free Metal Sonic from Heavy King's control. However, he was intercepted by Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, whom he engaged in battle using his Egg Mobile. During the fight however, Metal Sonic escaped. When Eggman later got defeated, Fang's gang, along with Amy, Mighty and Ray, caught up with Eggman and demanded an explanation. After having told the others everything, they agreed to help him stop Heavy King from using the Chaos Emeralds. After the group had made their way to Winter Caverns Zone, Eggman watched with glee as Sonic got ambushed by Metal Sonic twice. As the others engaged Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles, Eggman ended up working with Tails, who tried finding a way to jam the signal Heavy King was using to control the Metals from the Egg MObile. Fortunately, Tails Doll showed up, whom Eggman used to boost his jamming signal. With the Metals back under his command, Eggman ordered them to help the group. Eggman then opened the door Heavy King's base (before Bark and Mighty could smash it) where they confronted the rouge Hard Boiled Heavy. After Heavy King was stripped of the Chaos Emeralds and defeated, Eggman accepted a conceding Heavy King back to his service (although not without promising to upload a software patch that would keep him from rebelling again). Eggman then ordered his minions to take the Chaos Emeralds from his former allies, only to discover that they had already left with them. In addition, with his minions either destroyed, depleted of energy or otherwise unable to carry out Eggman's command of retrieving the Chaos Emeralds, a mopey Eggman ordered Heavy King to make a grilled cheese.[2]

Sonic Learns to Drive

Eggman, along with a group of his Badniks, later attacked a town, which led to the Mr. Munch-Um's Road Rally being cancelled.[3]

Dr. Eggman's Birthday

Eggman and his birthday cake, from Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special.

Awakening one morning in his headquarters, Eggman realized while taking a shower and getting dressed that it was his birthday. Assuming his Badniks would attempt another unwanted birthday party in his honor, Eggman braced himself for the celebration. Finding nobody in his base however, Eggman searched through his whole base, suspecting his Badniks were throwing him a surprise party. When he searched his surveillance room however, he found out his troops were on the way to attack Sonic and Tails and destroy him as his birthday gift. Knowing they stood no chance against Sonic, Eggman quickly swooped in with his Egg Mobile and ordered his Badniks to fall back. Meanwhile, Eggman heard Sonic's birthday greeting as well, but ignored it. After everyone had returned to base, Eggman berated his Badniks for their carelessness and explained why he did not want to celebrate his birthday until the Badniks explained they wanted to do something nice for him. Softening up a little, Eggman admitted their company was adequate, but threatened them not to do this again. Afterward, he conceded to their birthday party and (reluctantly) blew out the candles on his birthday cake.[1]

Eggman is an impatient, short-tempered and deceitful self-proclaimed evil genius and megalomaniac, who is always trying to take over the world. His ambitions and vile influence extend to even his robot minions, some of which he has programmed to be deceitful and conquest-driven like himself.[2] He is similarly extremely arrogant and conceited, to the point where he, as an example, deems heartfelt gifts made in his image for him to be inferior simply because they cannot match up to his own handsomeness.[1] He similarly loves to use his image and personalize his machines and bases in his own image. He is also rather violent and brutal man, as he tends to use brute force to defeat his foes. However, he is also immature and childish, usually resorting to pouting and sulking when having a bad day.[2]

As devoted as he is to conquering the world, Eggman can be a bit of a slouch, having built robots to handle more important tasks for him while he slacks off. He also tends to be deceptive, having once portrayed himself as an emotionally vulnerable man when he claimed his feelings got hurt when his robots turned on him, although he is quick to resort to anger when someone shows him no sympathy or empathy.[2]

Eggman is usually bold in his statements and standpoints. However, when he finds himself at a disadvantage, he is quick to give into peer pressure and physical threats. In addition, he takes great pride in himself and his creations, the latter in particular when when they surpass his expectations, even when it happens in a way he did not intend.[2]

While Eggman is able to temporarily cooperate with his enemies when his position of power is threatened, as soon as he regains control of the situation, he will immediately return to his villainous ways. Also, despite his pride, when it comes to birthdays, and especially his own, Eggman finds them a waste of time and bunch of nonsense. He especially dislikes his own birthdays due to his Badniks' tendency to throw unwanted birthdays and how he never manages to accomplish his goal of conquering the world or anything else noteworthy to mark the occasion. Despite this, he will reluctantly accept the parties his Badniks throw him.[1]

Powers and abilities

Eggman's most well-known ability is his masterminded plots and schemes which only fail due to Sonic and his friends. He is a remarkable scientist and engineer, as evidenced by the numerous armies of advanced robots, advanced headquarters and other mechanical inventions he has created.[2] Eggman is also an incredibly skilled pilot, able to steer his Egg Mobile and use its various tool with efficiency in battle with strong opponents.[2]

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is Eggman's arch enemy, who always thwarts his plans for world domination. Not taking kindly to Sonic's cheekiness and taunts at his expense, Eggman clearly despises Sonic, calling him a dolt for asking what he deems as ignorant questions and accusing him of ruining everything even on the occasions where they find themselves on the same side. He similar finds great entertainment when Sonic gets himself into trouble due to his own cockiness.[2] His dislike of Sonic is so prominent that he gets disturbed by the prospect of having to smash a piñata shaped like Sonic.[1]

The Badniks are Eggman's robotic minions. Although he usually treats them as expendable soldiers for his attempts at conquest and will no hesitate to threat them with overwriting their circuits when they do something without his approval, Eggman has a (secret) soft spot for them, having admitted their company is "adequate".[1] He especially takes some notable pride in Badniks like Heavy King who can rise above and beyond their intended purpose, as he sees it as testaments to how amazing his own genius is.[2] Also, though Eggman is eternally irritated by how his Badniks keep attempting to celebrate his birthday despite telling them not to waste time on such nonsense, he nonetheless appreciates the devotion they show him.[2]
