Seeking to seize power over Mobius however, Julian staged a successful coup, banished the King to the Void, and took over Mobotropolis. During this, he renamed himself Robotnik. Using then the Roboticizer he stole from Sir Charles, Robotnik began converting Mobius's population into Worker-Bots. Over the next eleven years however, Robotnik's reign was opposed by the Freedom Fighters, the moremost of which were the Knothole Freedom Fighters, led by Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie[]
In Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, Dr. Robotnik is the ruler of Robotropolis in the Land of Darkness on Planet Freedom. From there, he plots to destroy the Land of the Sky and establish himself as the undisputed ruler of the planet. However, he is constantly foiled by Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies. However, he would be opposed by the Freedom Fighters. When later warned by the Oracle of Delphius that he reign soon would end at the hands of Aleena's children, Robotnik made it his priority to hunt down the hedgehogs, who would continue to oppose him every step of the way on their search for their mother.
Sonic X[]
In the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics, Dr. Eggman was born on Earth, but somehow ended up on Sonic's world. There, he began scheming to conquer the world and establish his Eggman Empire, but was eternally opposed by his nemesis and rival, Sonic the Hedgehog, and his allies. During his campaigns for conquest, he has been aided by his sidekicks, Bocoe and Decoe, and a messenger robot named Bokkun.
By mistake, Eggman, along with Sonic and his friends, were eventually sent to Earth by a massive Chaos Control. There, Eggman enacted many diabolic plans for world domination, but Sonic and his friends always managed to stop him. Eventually though, Eggman returned to Sonic's world when everything and everyone from it that had ended up on Earth had to return to it, or time would come to a halt. Six months later, Eggman went on a hunt for the Chaos Emeralds after Sonic scattered them across the universe. Along the way, he had to content with both Sonic's crew and the Metarex. At the end though, Eggman teamed up with Sonic's crew to stop the Metarex's plans for universal dominance. After that, Eggman returned to his original plans of establishing his Eggman Empire.

After a mistake by the hedgehog, Eggman is caught up in the Prism's incident, which displaces him across different dimensions from the Shatterverse. His alternate counterparts in New Yoke City are the Chaos Council, which consists of Mr. Dr. Eggman, Dr. Babble, Dr. Deep, Dr. Don't and Dr. Done-It.
Books and comics[]
Sonic the Hedgehog (manga)[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog serialized manga series published by Shogakukan, Dr. Eggman is a long-time arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog. Early on in the Shogaku Ninensei manga's run, the evil doctor was looking for him and eventually found out the connection between Nicky and Sonic. His goal is to catch Sonic and make him his lackey as a part of his plan to take over the world.
In CoroCoro Comics Special manga strips, Eggman has army of robot soldiers and Badniks. He also has a secret alter ego Dogman, a policeman in Hedgehog Town. As Dogman, he teams up with Anton Veruca, the Number One Hooligan in Hedgehog Town.
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Dr. Ivo Robotnik was born Julian Kintobor in 3189 to Ivo and Bertha Kintobor. Living in Megaopolis, Julian studied under Nate Morgan before sabotaging him and taking over his lab. He later developed weapons for the Great War, using citizens as test subjects. The Minister of Justice, his brother, sentenced him to imprisonment, but Julian escaped and fled into the wilderness, where he was found by Jules and Charles Hedgehog.
Julian was granted asylum by King Maximillian Acorn. He was tutored in warfare by Warlord Kodos, who found a kindred ruthless spirit, despite his hatred for Overlanders. Kodos revealed his own plans to conquer the Kingdom of Acorn and Julian took the opportunity to betray him. With Kodos's tactics and his own genius, Julian turned the tide of the war and organized the final duel between King Acorn and Overlord Charlemagne. Then using the peacetime to prepare. His conquest used three things: the robots he had built for Mobotropolis, Kodos's plans, and the Roboticizer. Julian had discovered Sir Charles Hedgehog's research and sabotaged the project, making the would-be medical miracle a tool for enslavement. He conquered the city in hours, and then renamed himself "Doctor Ivo Robotnik" after his father and maternal grandfather. He then set about conquering Mobius. While he was met with resistance, nothing kept him attention more than the Knothole Freedom Fighters - especially Sonic the Hedgehog. Here, time takes two paths; in the Prime Zone, Dr. Robotnik's war ended with the firing of the Ultimate Annihilator. Thanks to Snively's treachery, Dr. Robotnik was erased from existence. In another timeline, however, his final battle with Sonic led to him being roboticized and his body destroyed. He uploaded his mind to an incomplete satellite where he eventually met his Prime counterpart and was inspired to strike back. The alternate Robotnik succeeded in rebuilding his body and destroying all life on his Mobius.
He then traveled across time and space to conquer Mobius Prime. Although his robot body was destroyed a few times, he uploaded his consciousness into a new body, now commonly called "Doctor Eggman". He hated the nickname, but in an effort of self-empowerment, he embraced it, and called his territory the Eggman Empire. Dr. Robotnik's robot body was later transformed into flesh-and-blood by the Bem as part of an experiment, but it did not change his lethal desires. Despite repeated defeats, setbacks and even death itself, Dr. Robotnik continued to rule with an iron first and an even darker, stronger will.
In the timeline created by the Super Genesis Wave, Ivo Robotnik was inspired by the achievements of his grandfather, Gerald, to become a great scientist. A young Robotnik would begin his scientific and military career by joining the United Federation's armed forces, G.U.N. However, at some point, he became power-hungry and began to plot to annex the entire world in his own empire. Eventually, however, he was discovered by another G.U.N. technician, Dr. Julian Snively, whom he forced to cooperate with him. After that, the doctors left G.U.N. in their quest to conquer the world. With help from the Royal Wizard Walter Naugus, Robotnik and Snively were able to reach to the Kingdom of Acorn to trick Nigel Acorn into thinking that the United Federation was conspiring against the kingdom and planning an assault on it. Nigel believed this lie, and granted the two full access to the kingdom's vast resources. However, Robotnik revealed his true cards and sent Nigel and Naugus to the Special Zone. Faced with no opposition, the doctor took over the Kingdom of Acorn and began overexploiting its natural resources to find the mystical Chaos Emeralds.
However, Robotnik, now having embraced the nickname "Eggman", soon after saw his plans falling apart due to the interference of Sonic the Hedgehog, who liberated the Kingdom of Acorn from his dictatorship and inspired the creation of the Freedom Fighters, a group of rebels that opposed his plans. Nevertheless, Eggman did not give up, and began plotting new schemes over the years to defeat Sonic for good and assure his total conquest of the planet. His exploits led to several catasthophes that threatened Sonic's world and even the Prime Zone itself and far beyond, such as Perfect Chaos flooding Station Square, the use of weapons of mass destruction to subjugate the world, his testing of the Genesis Waves to split the planet into multiple pocket Zones, and almost having the Prime Zone combined with the Sol Zone. Fortunately, all of these plans were thwarted by Sonic and the Freedom Fighters before it was too late, but the doctor kept on trying. Following the Time Eater incident, Eggman cooperated with Dr. Wily, another evil scientist from Earth in another universe, to conquer their respective worlds, but their failure led to Sonic's world being shattered. The doctor attempted to use this incident to this advantage, but this plan failed too.
Sonic the Comic[]
In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, Dr. Ivo Robotnik was created during a laboratory accident involving the goodly scientist Dr. Ovi Kintobor, a rotten egg and the Chaos Emeralds. During the series he managed to send Sonic forward in time by six months, during which time he managed to conquer Mobius. Sonic and his friends formed a group of Freedom Fighters with the aim of overthrowing him, of which they eventually did which caused Robotnik to lose his sanity.

Paramount[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures, Dr. Ivo Robotnik is a brilliant human scientist, portrayed by Jim Carrey. Growing up as an orphan and bullied in his childhood, he came to resent family and humanity in general as a result. After beginning his career, he would work closely with the United States government, known infamously for his knowledge with robotics.
Eventually, Dr. Ivo Robotnik was tasked with investigating the cause of a power outage in Green Hills. He soon met the cause, a young blue alien named Sonic the Hedgehog who could move at superhuman speeds. From there, he sought out to capture this creature in order to harness his unlimited power for his own means. However, in the end, he was defeated by the hedgehog and banished to the Mushroom Planet.
Months later, Dr. Ivo Robotnik managed to return to Earth with the help of Knuckles the Echidna, an alien echidna who was in search of Sonic and the Master Emerald. The doctor aided the echidna in his search for the gemstone, only to claim it for himself and later terrorize Green Hills. However, he was defeated through the combined efforts of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles.

Early Sonic canon[]
- "Kintobor" redirects here. For other uses, see Kintobor (disambiguation).
In the early Sonic canon created by Sega of America in the early 1990s, Dr. Ivo Robotnik was originally a kind human scientist named "Doctor Ovi Kintobor" (with the words Ovi and Kintobor forming Ivo Robotnik when written backwards) who spent fifteen years trying to rid planet Mobius of all evil, developing the so-called "Amazing Transforming Machine" (ATM) to transfer the evil energy into the six Chaos Emeralds, but his research was halted when he found out that the Emeralds were very unstable, prompting him to begin the search for the seventh, Grey Emerald to neutralize the evil within the gems. Eventually, Kintobor met Sonic, a seemingly ordinary hedgehog with super speed, and became friends with him. However, before the doctor was able to realize his plan, a wave of radiation hit his lab, causing the ATM to zap him with the Emeralds' evil and transforming him into the derranged Dr. Robotnik. From there on, the twisted scientist would be opposed by Sonic in his plans to conquer Mobius.
This backstory is shown in the second draft of the Sonic Bible. The Stay Sonic book gives Kintobor a more detailed story, saying that he was a human mastermind with various talents and an IQ of around 268. Neither the games themselves nor Japanese material made any mention of the character, however. Meanwhile, the early North American Sonic canon would be slowly abandoned throughout the 1990s. This culminated in the Sonic series' 10th anniversary, in 2001, with the release of Sonic Adventure 2, which scrapped the Kintobor backstory entirely. No mention of Dr. Kintobor and the canon he came from has been made ever since.

Trivia[]
- Eggman has blood type B.[3]
- Rather fittingly, people with such type of blood are described as selfish but creative and passionate according to the pseudoscientific blood type personality theory, which is widespread in Japan.
- In the opening of Team Sonic's story in Sonic Heroes, what appears to be Eggman's signature can be partially seen on the letter he sent to the heroes. It consists of the word "Eggman" written in cursive.
- However, in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, a different signature was shown in one of Eggmanland's souvenirs. This one consists of the writing "DR. Eggman" and a drawing of the doctor's mustache and glasses.[21]
- According to Orbot, Eggman has lost to Sonic at least 227,000 times as of Team Sonic Racing.[22]
- Although, it is likely a hyperbole due to in that case Sonic and Eggman would have to fight, at best, much longer than Sonic's life, and at worst, for hundreds of years.
- Despite his general disdain towards nature, Eggman was said to have a vegetation garden somewhere onboard the Final Fortress.[23]
- According to Takashi Iizuka, Eggman makes his eggs sunny-side up.[24]
- Also according to Iizuka, Sonic Forces probably marks the only point where Eggman will be most successful in his goals.[24]
- Eggman does not regret blowing up half of the moon in Sonic Adventure 2, nor does he care about whether or not his publicist got upset about it.[24]
- According to a promotional ad for Sonic Jump (2012), Eggman can merely jump a single meter (3,28 ft.) in a minute, as opposed to Sonic's 342 meters (1122,04 ft.) in that same time.
- Apparently, Eggman does not enjoy being on teams.[25]
- Eggman appears to love taking selfies, supposedly having around ten terabytes just of them in his computer.[26]
- Despite Eggman's age having been displayed as "Unknown" in most sources, the Japanese Sonic Jam guide refers to him as an "old man",[27] which the United Nations currently defines as a person that surpassed the age of 60 or 65. More recently, the Life in Sonic's World artbook released in 2021, which contains descriptions of "Sonic PICT" artwork from Sonic Channel, speculates that the doctor might be old judging by his speech manner and mustache.[28][better source needed]
- In Japanese, Eggman also goes by the personal pronoun washi (わし?), which is used in fiction to represent characters of old age.
- A piece of concept artwork of Sonic the Hedgehog CD indicates that Eggman was born in 1931, which would put him in his 60s if one assumes the franchise takes place in the 1990s, and in his early 90s in the present day.
- Mike Pollock, Eggman's English voice actor since 2005, stated on Twitter that the character was said to be in his 40s according to the specs he was given in 2009.[29] However, he also elaborated that these were more likely to refer to the vocal age the producers wanted for the character.[30]
- Takashi Iizuka responded that Eggman’s age has not been disclosed, but considering he’s probably under 50 years old, then, if Maria were alive today, she would be older than him.[31]
- Eggman's favorite hot dog is the "Egg Dog" which was sold in Eggmanland in Sonic Unleashed.[32] He also appears to like his "Poppin' Eggcorn", which he munches all the time.[33]
- It is hard to pinpoint the exact moment where Eggman stopped referring to himself by his real name. In various of the Classic games, the name "Eggman" can be seen at some points like in Wing Fortress Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and is used in some of his creations like the Giant Eggman Robo from Sonic & Knuckles. In the English version of Sonic Adventure, he asserts that his name is "Robotnik",[34] but begins referring to himself as "Eggman" from Sonic Adventure 2 onward.[35] In Sonic Generations, Classic Eggman, the version of the character from before Sonic Adventure, says that "nobody calls me that [Robotnik] anymore", suggesting that he had adopted the nickname much earlier.[36] In the Japanese versions of these titles, he is consistently called "Eggman", with no reference to "Robotnik", suggesting that he adopted the nickname long before even the Classic games.
- While Eggman himself does not appear to know his birthday date,[37] he seems to share his birthday with Sonic's, on June 23,[38][39] the release date of the original Sonic the Hedgehog in the United States. This is an allusion to the fact that both characters made their first major appearance in that game.
- This was first strongly implied in the "Birthday on Windy Hill" event for Sonic Runners,[40] and in the June 24, 2023 stream of Sonic Station Live!, where Sonic and Tails sing "happy birthday" to Eggman.[37]
- While Eggman does not have a permanent residence, he does refer to the Final Fortress as "home sweet home" in Team Sonic Racing, implying he lived there during that game.[41]
- In the Sonic Simulator in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Eggman implied that he could perform tricks similar to Sonic's own when he was younger, though the accuracy of this remains uncertain.[42]
- Eggman seems to run countless casinos that he himself has built. His influence over the casino industry is apparently so large that some people have reported only seeing poker chips with his face plastered on them.[43]
- Regardless, for unspecified reasons, Eggman has been "unfairly" banned from casinos such as Casino Park.[44]
- Eggman has been noted for his awful food. Various of Sonic's friends, including Chip, Professor Pickle, and Tails have declared their disgust over it, with Chip even implying that the doctor's favorite food might be largely made of synthetic ingredients.[45][46][47][48][49][50][51]
- Despite how repugnant Eggman's food appears to be, Amy has reported that he appears to be surprisingly good at baking cookies judging by his recipe for them, but only if one takes out the "evil influences" from it.[52]
- It is speculated Eggman might secretly be very rich, judging by his ability to gather up enough resources to build massive warships like those in his Egg Fleet.[53]
- Eggman has occasionally been depicted as somewhat of a rapper, examples including the background music of Metallic Madness in Sonic the Hedgehog CD and especially in its recreation in Sonic Mania, as well as in the 2023 edition of the Sonic Central presentations.[54] In all three of these, in line with his narcissism, he has had a reoccurrent theme of boasting about his inventions like his Badniks and his mechs, as well as his evilness and his new plan to defeat Sonic and conquer the world.
- It has been hinted that Eggman has lawyers.[55]
- According to Naoto Ohshima, Eggman is a Doctor of Engineering.[56]
- In Sonic Adventure, Eggman has a Chao Garden linked to his Egg Carrier. Though the reason for this is unknown, it has been speculated that he might have an unexpected fondness for cute things.[57]
- As depicted in Sonic the Animation, Eggman is a very messy man, with posters of himself and crossed out images of Sonic filling the walls in his lair, and piles of junk that even he himself frequently trips over being all over his workroom.
- When asked whether Eggman had parents, Naoto Ohshima replied "maybe".[58]
- On 3 December 2012, a woman named Susan Eggman was elected a member of the California State Assembly. Additionally, in June 2014, a man named Michael Eggman was elected Congress Representative of Central Valley, California. Due to this, Dr. Eggman is currently the only character in the series who shares a name with a political figure.
- Accordingly, the yellow "cape" Eggman wore before Sonic Adventure is based on the uniform worn by sea cadets, specifically those in the United Kingdom.[59]
- Not counting Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which features his Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog counterpart, Eggman has only starred in one game: the Sonic Cafe title Eggman no Kazuate Panic!
- In early 2005, a poll was done in Sega's official website asking which character should get their own game. The contestants were Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Eggman himself. The names suggested for a hypothetical game starring the doctor were "Dr. Eggman Strikes Again!", "Dr. Eggman and the Lost Emeralds", "Dr. Eggman: Robotnik's Revenge", "Dr. Eggman: Out of Control", and "Dr. Eggman: The World's Not Enough".[60] In the end, Eggman came in tied with Shadow, who would get his own game at the end of 2005.[61][better source needed]
- On rare occasions, Eggman's surname "Robotnik" has been misspelled "Robotonik" or similar in English localizations of the games, most likely due to an incorrect romanization of the Japanese Robotonikku (ロボトニック?).[62][63]
- Eggman is the first character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series to swear, having used profanities on some occasions to talk to the playable characters in SegaSonic the Hedgehog.[64]
- Eggman is the only character who has retained his English voice actor since 2005, whereas all of the other characters have had their English voice actor changed in 2010.
- In Shadow the Hedgehog, Dr. Eggman is the only ally of Shadow's that appears as a guide for both Dark and Hero missions.
- In line with the original Western artworks depicting Robotnik's blue glasses as either beady black cartoonish eyes or otherwise empty black sinister-like eyes, in the gameplay of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles the doctor is shown to have black eyes instead of his usual blue glasses (can be mistaken for black glasses). This is because these games were developed in the United States doing the said occurances of the character. In Sonic Origins, his black eyes were recolored to blue glasses in these titles for consistency with the other games included.
- Although Eggman's original design originally had little to no exposure in the west by the time of Sonic 1's release, the European box art cover of the game depicts him in his latter design. This was quickly changed to his American one when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came out.
- So far, he is the only one of the main characters to have the most alternate designs out of all the characters, specially in 1990s Western media.
- Eggman is the only human character to be fully playable in a mainline Sonic game, although Maria, and Eggman Nega are playable too; Maria is controllable with a second player in Shadow the Hedgehog, and Nega is playable in two of the Mario & Sonic games.
- Owing to Eggman's more childish personality, he tends to do activities in a more childlike manner, which is best demonstrated in Sonic Superstars: Trio of Trouble, where his attempted drawing copy of a particular mural, or more specifically the Black Dragon within the mural was crudely done enough that it bore a closer resemblance to a winged cow.
