Past[]

Eggman was born Ivo Robotnik and came from a large family of brilliant scientists and geniuses.[12][13] When he was a child, he never had a chance to meet his cousin, Maria, before she died in the aftermath of Project Shadow. Even then, he would somewhat bear her ill will due to everyone speaking of her when she was gone instead of giving him attention.[14] In contrast, he deeply idolized his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, because of all of his achievements and accomplishments in his life. This inspired a young Ivo to become a great scientist like his hero did.[15] During his career to fullfil his dream, Robotnik allegedly followed a teaching degree, apparently because he liked telling people what to do, but did not get it for unknown reasons.[10]

At one point, Dr. Robotnik, due to his arrogance and immaturity,[16][17][18] began envisioning a planetary empire with him as its leader to constantly be at the center of attention.[19][13] These factors would eventually make him so obsessed with accomplishing his dream that he was utterly convinced by his own twisted beliefs and lack of common sense that the results of a world conquest orchestrated by him would make it a better place and benefit all its inhabitants.[9][20][21][22]

In the past, Dr. Robotnik met the heroic Sonic the Hedgehog and the two became enemies, with the villain facing his new adversary in at least one conflict before the time of the South Island incident. While very little is known about their battles in this period, the doctor would develop an intense, mutual hatred towards the hedgehog, who would always thwart all of his plans for world domination with seemingly little effort; and in turn began considering him his sworn enemy.[23][24] At a later point, Sonic also began to mock his nemesis with the nickname "Eggman" due to his egg-shaped body; Robotnik himself would eventually get so fed up with this name that he would adopt it as his own as a sign of empowerment.[13][25]

Death Egg saga[]

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)[]
Sonic Origins Sonic 1 intro 9

Dr. Eggman leading his Badnik troops, from Sonic Origins.

In the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), frustrated by Sonic's ability to foil his plans, Dr. Eggman developed a plan to invade South Island and get the legendary Chaos Emeralds, whose power he sought to exploit to annex the entire world into his Eggman Empire as a stepping stone to build his utopia, "Eggmanland".[23][26][27] With this plan in mind, the doctor and his minions launched a full-scale assault on South Island. He soon after built his new stronghold, the Scrap Brain, at the northern corner of the island, where he would develop his operations. Soon after, he began kidnapping the island's Animals and using most of them to power his Badnik servants.[23] The remaining Animals would be left trapped in Capsules around South Island. Eggman subsequently sent his robots off to find the Chaos Emeralds, swearing that he was going to get them even if he had to tear all of South Island apart.[23]

It did not take long for Sonic to get the news of Eggman's actions and rush to defeat him. Eventually, in Green Hill, the doctor encountered the hedgehog and told him that he would win with the entire island under his control.[23] Despite his conviction, Eggman began being pushed back by his nemesis, who steadily liberated the captured Animals and found the Chaos Emeralds one by one. The doctor himself tried on several occasions to defeat the hedgehog with his various contraptions and vehicles, but was defeated during every encounter. After Sonic invaded the Scrap Brain, Eggman sent him into the ruins underneath the fortress with a trap. However, the doctor soon encountered him again in his laboratory. There, Eggman tried to crush his nemesis with his Egg Crusher. Upon Eggman's defeat however, a chain reaction was triggered that caused Eggman's entire fortress to explode. This forced the doctor to escape using his nearby Egg Mobile, although not before Sonic dealt a final blow to the hovercraft, causing him to crash.

Sonic the Hedgehog CD[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, after the South Island incident,[note 1] Dr. Eggman took notice of the mystical Little Planet during its annual appearance over Never Lake. He then learned that the planetoid was hosting the Time Stones, which could be used to control time. Seeing the stones as his perfect tool for world conquest, the doctor secured Little Planet for himself by chaining it to a nearby mountain with his own face sculpted on it.[28][29][30] After this, he built a huge stronghold on the planetoid and set out to achieve his ambition of world conquest by adquiring the Time Stones and using them to freely command time itself.[28] Though he did not allegedly invade Little Planet's past, this timeline was filled with robot transporters and Metal Sonic holograms of his, thus allowing him to cause chaos in Little Planet's future and gain total control of it. As expected however, this made the planet a peaceless place as the local Animals were hiding in fear and its locations were heavily polluted in the future time period.[31] Also worth noting is that, during this incident, Eggman was served by his greatest creation to date: Metal Sonic, a robotic doppelgänger of Sonic who could match his nemesis' speed and power.[30]

Eventually, Eggman found out that Sonic was approaching Never Lake. With a sinister smile being drawn on his face, the doctor proudly proclaimed that he would finally be able to defeat his nemesis and conquer the world.[28] However, he soon got pushed back by Sonic as the hedgehog began restoring the future of Little Planet's regions. The doctor tried to defeat Sonic himself on numerous occasions with his machines, but failed each time. Eventually, in Stardust Speedway, Eggman challenged Sonic to a race against Metal Sonic. Despite that, his plan to kill his enemy upon his defeat failed when the hedgehog managed to win over his robot copy, who got smashed against a gate, and mercilessly destroyed by the ruthlessness of Eggman himself.[32] Later, the doctor desperately tried to defeat Sonic with his Egg Spinner when he found him in his stronghold. However, he was ultimately defeated, causing a chain reaction that destroyed the metallic shell covering Little Planet while Sonic escaped with Amy Rose.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, following the Little Planet incident,[note 1] Dr. Eggman heard of the stories surrounding West Side Island that claimed the Chaos Emeralds were resting somewhere on the island. Intending to get the gems to power his ultimate weapon, the Death Egg, he found the island by following Sonic there while the latter was out flying in the Tornado.[33][34]

Landing on West Side Island, Dr. Eggman spent the next few days kidnapping the local Animals and using them to power his Badnik army. Eventually, he and his minions were able to take control of everything on the island.[35] Soon after, the doctor began a rampage in a forest, violently burning it down as his army teared it up to find the Chaos Emeralds. During this, the villain laughed out loud and gloated in pride that he would get the jewels and conquer the world.[33][34]

Unfortunately for Eggman, Sonic soon set out with his new sidekick, Miles "Tails" Prower, to foil his operations. On several occasions after that, the doctor would clash with the duo in his mechs, only to be defeated in each encounter. Eventually, after his defeat in Metropolis, the villain escaped to his air fortress, the Wing Fortress, only for the heroes to follow him there. Onboard the vessel, the scientist trapped the hedgehog in his Laser Prison upon being cornered, only for his nemesis to destroy it. As his Wing Fortress then began to fall, Eggman fled to his Death Egg, which was orbiting the planet, in his space rocket. Unfortunately for him, Sonic had managed to hitch a ride on the space rocket to the space station.

Sonic 2 2013 Death Egg Robot 2

Onboard the Death Egg, Dr. Eggman attempted to use Mecha Sonic to defeat Sonic. After his robot was defeated though, he fled from the hedgehog as the latter chased him. Despite the odds, the doctor was able to outrun his nemesis for long enough to enter his final trump card: the Death Egg Robot.[35] After a heated battle however, the mech was destroyed, triggering a chain-reaction onboard the Death Egg that caused it to explode, leaving Eggman's plans in ruins while Sonic escaped to safety.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles[]
Sonic the Hedgehog 3[]
Sonic Origins Eggman and Knuckles

Dr. Eggman teaming up with Knuckles, from Sonic Origins.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Dr. Eggman and his Death Egg entered the earth's orbit after Sonic had damaged the spaceship. On the Death Egg's way to the surface of the planet, however, was Angel Island, a landmass that floats in the sky thanks to the Master Emerald. After the Death Egg collided with Angel Island's surface, the island fell on top of the ocean, causing a great tsunami on the earth. Having survived the crash, Eggman was aware that the Chaos Emeralds were on Angel Island. He also tracked the energy of the Master Emerald, which he could use to power the Death Egg and send it to space again. As such, he started to build his own base on the island, kidnapped the local Animals to turn them into Badniks, and changed the nature of Angel Island to a more severe one by using an environment-changing machine.[36]

Days later, in a forest on Angel Island, Eggman came across Knuckles the Echidna. Having learned about the echidna's position as the guardian of the island, the doctor falsely claimed that he was a scientist who was investigating the Death Egg incident, and that Sonic was coming to steal the Master Emerald. Knuckles fell for Eggman's lies and agreed to help him stop Sonic upon his arrival.[36]

Some time after, Eggman and Knuckles tried in vain to attack Sonic and Tails as the heroes were making their way through Angel Island. At the Launch Base, Eggman launched the Death Egg even without any energy source. However, Sonic and Tails had gotten aboard the Death Egg just in time to have a final showdown against the doctor. After Eggman was defeated, a chain reaction caused the Death Egg to be critically damaged, making it and Eggman plummet onto Angel Island again as Sonic and Tails watched.[35]

Sonic & Knuckles[]
Knuckles trying to save the Master Emerald

Dr. Eggman stealing the Master Emerald, from Sonic & Knuckles.

In Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Dr. Eggman and the Death Egg fell onto Angel Island again, this time in Lava Reef, the island's active volcano system. As Sonic and Tails continued their adventure to destroy the spaceship for once and for all, Eggman and Knuckles made numerous other tried to slow down the heroes, only to fail. In Lava Reef, the doctor used the Death Egg's laser eyes to re-activate the volcano to burn the heroes alive. Despite the odds though, Sonic and Tails still survived the incident. Having had enough, Eggman went to the Hidden Palace and stole the Master Emerald using the Egg Mobile while Knuckles was distracted having a showdown against Sonic and Tails. However, the noise he made caused the three to discover him as the echidna discovered his true colors. Infuriated over this, Knuckles tried to take the Master Emerald from the doctor, only for Eggman to electrocute him by using electrical cords from the Egg Mobile.

Having successfully managed to re-launch the Death Egg, Dr. Eggman passed through the Sky Sanctuary as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles watched. With no time to waste, Sonic and Tails managed to get aboard the Death Egg as Knuckles was left behind. Now with the Death Egg into space, Eggman had a showdown against the heroes aboard the Giant Eggman Robo. As a chain reaction was triggered to destroy the space station, the doctor managed to use the Final Weapon to escape with the Master Emerald. However, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic/Hyper Sonic and managed to defeat him.

Sonic Origins stranded Eggman

Dr. Eggman stranded in the middle of the ocean, from Sonic Origins.

Later on, Dr. Eggman was revealed to have survived. After the Final Weapon fell into earth, he got stranded in the middle of the ocean with nothing but a lifebuoy. However, a Flicky soon after appeared. Though the doctor begged it not to pop the lifebuoy, the bird ended up doing so anyway.[37]

Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit), Dr. Eggman learned of the Chaos Emeralds and their incredible power, prompting him to launch an attack on South Island, where he kidnapped the local Animals and put them into Capsules. He then sent his Badniks to find the Chaos Emeralds, while he built his massive fortress - the Scrap Brain - on top of a mountain.[38]

Unfortunately for Eggman, Sonic soon came to South Island, where he collected the Chaos Emeralds one by one and steadily freed the captive Animals. Along the way, Eggman himself tried on several occasions to defeat Sonic with his various contraptions and vehicles, but was defeated during every encounter. When Sonic eventually made it to the Scrap Brain, Eggman escaped to his blimp. With Sonic pursuing him up there however, the doctor tried to defeat Sonic in a trap-filled room, only to fail. Thankfully, Eggman managed to escape using a nearby teleporter. While fleeing through Green Hill in his Egg Mobile however, Sonic appeared above him thanks to Eggman's own teleporter and dealt Eggman's Egg Mobile a crippling blow, causing it to crash with him in it.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), while Sonic was gone, Dr. Eggman invaded South Island and kidnapped all of its local Animals, including Sonic's closest friend, Miles "Tails" Prower. He would also station his six Master Robots in various locations. The doctor would hold Tails prisoner in the Crystal Egg, where the fox a note to Sonic that explained to him his whereabouts and what the doctor was doing. Tails also explained that Eggman wanted Sonic to get the Chaos Emeralds and hand them over to him to get to the Crystal Egg and free him.[39]

After Sonic got Tails' note and set out on his rescue mission, Dr. Eggman saved Sonic from falling into a lava pool in Under Ground before making him battle the Pit Master. Much later, after Sonic had gathered the Chaos Emeralds, Eggman had a showdown against Sonic in a trap-ridden room. However, Eggman was defeated, forcing him to escape via a teleporter, which deposited Tails from it after the doctor had escaped through it.

SegaSonic the Hedgehog[]

SSTH Eggman Tower

Dr. Eggman monitoring Eggman Island, from SegaSonic the Hedgehog.

In SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Eggman captured Sonic, Mighty and Ray and imprisoned them on Eggman Island where he planned to execute them. When the heroes broke out of their cell though, the villain blew them to the other side of his island. From there, the doctor remained in his control tower where he tried to stop the trio on their journey to him with remote-controlled traps. When the trio got to him however, Eggman triggered the tower to self-destruct within twenty seconds. Though he got away, his plan to destroy his enemies failed, as they escaped Eggman Island in time. Meanwhile, the villain was flying over the ocean with the Egg Mobile when his vehicle ran out of fuel, sending the unlucky doctor plummeting into the water.

Sonic Chaos[]

In Sonic Chaos, while Sonic and Tails were out on an adventure, Dr. Eggman resurfaced with the intention of stealing the six Chaos Emeralds on South Island. When he took one of the gems, however, the other five scattered. This destabilized the island, causing it to slowly sink into the ocean.[40] Soon after, the doctor began being hunted down by Sonic and Tails.

LaserWalkerboss

When Sonic and Tails made it to Dr. Eggman's fortress, the Electric Egg, the villain fought them in a Laser Walker mech, but was defeated. Although the doctor managed to escape, he accidentally dropped his Chaos Emerald, allowing the heroes to reclaim it and save South Island.

Sonic Drift series[]

Sonic Drift[]
Sonic Drift ending Robotnik 3

Dr. Eggman being chased by an annoyed Sonic, from Sonic Drift.

In Sonic Drift, Dr. Eggman took part of a race competition alongside Sonic, Tails, and Amy. For this event, the doctor drove the Egg Typhoon, a modified Eggman Mobile.[41]

Throughout the competition, Eggman had to win a series of races taking place in various regions on South Island. In a possible outcome, he would actually win, boasting about his victory to an annoyed Sonic, who would give chase to his nemesis on foot while the doctor cowardly ran away.

Sonic Drift 2[]

In Sonic Drift 2, Dr. Eggman took part of another race competition where he drove the Egg Typhoon again. This time, he had to win a series of races against Sonic, Tails, Amy, Nack, Knuckles, and Metal Sonic. At the end of the competition, he would race the blue hedgehog on the Death Egg.

Sonic Spinball[]

In the 16-bit version of Sonic Spinball, in an attempt to turn the Animals of Planet Mobius into robots, Dr. Eggman took control of Mount Mobius. On this mountain, the doctor created the Veg-O-Fortress, a fiendish contraption powered by the mountain's volcano, which was robotizing Animals at an incredibly fast rate. To protect his fortress, Eggman constructed a lethal defense system powered by the volcano, called the Pinball Defense System. Sonic and Tails soon mounted an air assault on the fortress, only to get blasted by Eggman's cannons. Unfortunately for Eggman, Sonic surived the attack and began making his way up through the Veg-O-Fortress's defense system, seizing the Chaos Emeralds that kept the fortress stable and freeing the Animals of Mobius along the way.[42] When the Veg-O-Fortress began to crumble, Eggman tried to escape in a spaceship, but got intercepted and defeated by Sonic. Falling from space upon his defeat, Eggman landed in the sea around his Veg-O-Fortress, just as it sank into the sea.

Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble[]

Robotnik STT intro

Dr. Eggman with his Chaos Emerald, from Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble.

In Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, while hiding from Sonic, Dr. Eggman managed to get six of the Chaos Emeralds, which he began to use to test his ultimate weapon: the Atomic Destroyer. While the extent of these experiments is uncertain, it is known that the results of these included leaving a nearby island in permanent winter.[43] However, in the midst of these tests, the Emeralds disappeared out of nowhere upon an accident. Having only found the yellow Emerald, the doctor knew that the hedgehog and Tails were bound to come and thwart his plans. To delay them, he tricked Knuckles into believing that the heroes were out to steal the gems for world domination. He also brought up Metal Sonic to dispose of the duo at a later moment.[44][45]

Eventually, Dr. Eggman captured Knuckles after he was defeated by Sonic and Tails in Tidal Plant, trapping the echidna in an energy cage in his fortress. When the heroes infiltrated this stronghold soon after and defeated Metal Sonic, the doctor himself stepped in and faced his nemeses in three different contraptions, but his efforts ended in failure. In the aftermath, the villain dropped his last Chaos Emerald while fleeing, while Sonic and Tails liberated Knuckles and made peace with him.

Knuckles' Chaotix[]

In Knuckles' Chaotix, some months after the Angel Island incident, a mysterious island was formed due to tectonic movement caused by the power of the Master Emerald's Pillar. Theorizing that something was amplifying the power of the Pillar, Dr. Eggman traveled to the newly-formed island to investigate. There, he came across a small Ring with ancient writing, revealing that the place was part of a lost civilization, and later across a Giant Ring that looked exactly like the ones on Angel Island. Eggman then made an astonishing discovery: this massive Ring could lead him to a "power stone", which he believed to be the Master Emerald. He also learned that the mysterious spaces the Giant Rings lead to were filled with the energy of the Pillar that was turned into crystaline bodies named Chaos Rings. Eggman figured out that, if he figured out the secrets of the Rings, he would be bestowed the ability to summon the Master Emerald. With a new plan in mind, he began turning the island into a massive resort named Newtrogic High Zone, which would serve as his research station for the Rings.[46]

When Knuckles, also curious about the nature of Newtrogic High Zone, arrived on the nearby Isolated Island, Dr. Eggman had already managed to crystalize the Chaos Rings' energies into seven artificial Dark Rings. In addition to that, he had also developed a Ring Power that would create a space-time connection between the Rings. Seeing as his new plot to conquer the world was being successfully realized, the doctor gloated that nothing would stop him from achieving global domination.[46] Later, on Isolated Island, Eggman was trapping Espio the Chameleon inside of a Combi Catcher, before meeting Knuckles, who would liberate the prisoner. Meanwhile, the villain escaped thanks to Metal Sonic's help.

Eggman's plans would be put back by Knuckles, Mighty, Heavy the Robot, Bomb, and Team Chaotix; all of whom joined forces to put a stop to the doctor's plans. The villain would ocassionally fight the heroes in his mechs, but had no success in delaying their efforts. Eventually, after the crew found all seven Dark Rings and defeated Metal Sonic, Eggman made use of another Dark Ring to turn the robot into a titanic monster: Metal Sonic Kai. However, after this last-ditch attempt failed too, the doctor's plans were foiled once again.

Sonic Labyrinth[]

In Sonic Labyrinth, Eggman was brainstorming for new ideas to defeat Sonic. He eventually realized that it was the hedgehog's speed that foiled his plans. As such, he created the Slow Down Boots, which stripped anyone who wore them off of their speed. The doctor then replaced Sonic's shoes with the Slow Down Boots to prevent his nemesis from thwarting his plans ever again.[47]

The next day, no sooner had Dr. Eggman received the news that Sonic had fallen into his trap and put on the Slow Down Boots, than he adquired the Chaos Emeralds and started building a Super Labyrinth-based Eggmanland on South Island. The doctor, with his head up in the clouds due to his good mood, gloated out loud that the Slow Down Boots were made with Chaos Emerald energy, and thus the hedgehog could only take them off with the Emeralds in the Super Labyrinth. As such, Sonic broke into the fortress and managed to get the Emeralds one by one.[47] In the end, Eggman was defeated and his nemesis used the Chaos Emeralds to dispose of the Slow Down Boots for good.

Sonic the Fighters[]

Robotnik Fighters

Dr. Eggman overseeing his troops cause chaos on earth, from Sonic the Fighters.

In Sonic the Fighters, Dr. Eggman built the Death Egg II, which he used to dispatch destructive robot armies from space down to earth to avenge his constant defeats. In order to stop the doctor from causing more chaos, Sonic and his friends battled each other to see who would get the eight Chaos Emeralds first and use the Lunar Fox to go to the doctor's spaceship and battle him.[48] Along the way, Eggman himself made occasional appearances, creating clones of the heroes to fight them.

Eventually, the winner used the Lunar Fox to go to the Death Egg II, where they defeated Metal Sonic. During a later fight against Dr. Eggman, a self-destruct countdown activated to destroy the Death Egg II. Fortunately though, the hero defeated the doctor and fleed from the spaceship as it exploded. However, Eggman managed to escape as well.

Sonic 3D Blast[]

Sonic 3D Blast Genesis Robotnik's plan

Dr. Eggman learning about the Flickies, from the Sega Mega Drive version of Sonic 3D Blast.

In Sonic 3D Blast, Dr. Eggman discovered Flicky Island with his spy satellite. According to legend, this island was inhabited by Flickies that served as clues for the Chaos Emeralds' locations. Having heard of this legend, the doctor headed to the island to catch the birds. After his arrival though, he found no trace of any of them. Then, he saw a flock of Flickies popping out of a Dimensional Ring to eat some nuts on the trees, before going back through the Ring. With this observation, Eggman figured out that the birds were coming in and out through subspaces using the Dimensional Rings. He proceeded to built a Dimensional Ring Generator, which he used to capture the Flickies and put them inside of his Badniks. When he later saw Sonic arrive on the island, the doctor gloated to him that he would finally be able to conquer the world before flying away in his Egg Mobile.[49]

Unfortunately for Eggman, Sonic was able to steadily foil his operations across the island. On several occasions, the doctor tried to defeat his arch-nemesis using different mechs, but was defeated in every encounter. Eventually, the hedgehog found his way to Eggman's base with the aid of the Chaos Emeralds and the Flickies, prompting the doctor to face him in a final fight using his Final Weapon. However, Eggman was ultimately defeated by Sonic, and Flicky Island was freed from his rule.

Sonic Blast[]

G-Sonic-Story-Art-III

Dr. Eggman revealing himself to Sonic, from Sonic Blast.

In Sonic Blast, Dr. Eggman attempted to fire at Sonic with a laser beam while the hedgehog was sleeping in his hammock on South Island. However, he missed his target and instead hit the Chaos Emerald on the hedgehog's hand, causing it to shatter into five smaller shards that flew away.[50] Pleased with the results nonetheless, the doctor revealed himself to his nemesis and gloated that he could now built a floating stronghold known as the Silver Castle, now with Sonic unable to use the Emerald against him, which he planned to find after finishing his fortress. The villain left the scene, confident that he would finally be victorious. However, when Knuckles revealed himself to have overheard the conversation, he teamed up with the hedgehog and the two declared to Eggman that they would foil his ambitions.[51]

As expected, Eggman's plans began being thwarted by Sonic and Knuckles, as the duo traveled across South Island and collect the Chaos Emeralds' shards while defeating the doctor whenever he showed up in a mech to stop them. Onboard the Silver Castle, Eggman had two battles against the heroes, but was defeated, causing his stronghold to fall into the sea with him in it while the group escaped.

Sonic R[]

In Sonic R, Dr. Eggman detected that the Chaos Emeralds were hidden somewhere along the tracks of the World Grand Prix. He thus signed up to participate in the competition, causing Sonic to participate as well to defeat him. However, this was all part of the doctor's plan: by getting Sonic and his friends to compete in the World Grand Prix, they would collect the seven Emeralds for him, which he could then easily steal from them and use to conquer the world. He then proceeded to laugh maniacally, believing that his dreams of world domination would finally become a reality.[52] In the end though, his plans were never fully realized.

Modern Era[]

Sonic Adventure[]

In Sonic Adventure, whilst building a stronghold, the Final Egg, at the Mystic Ruins, Eggman discovered a nearby ancient temple, in which he found stone tablets depicting the power of the Chaos Emeralds and Chaos, a mighty beast who wiped out a society known as the Knuckles Clan millenia ago. Through these tablets, the doctor learned that this creature's power would increase by giving him Chaos Emeralds and still existed sealed in the Master Emerald. Eager to use the monster's power to his advantage, he made a plan to gather the Emeralds to empower Chaos and use him to destroy Station Square, where he would build Eggmanland. With this new idea, he finished the Final Egg and moved on to another project: the Egg Carrier, an all-purpose aerial fortress. He also built the E-100 Series robots, an army of elite Badniks to help him embark on the destruction of Station Square.[53][54]

Sonic Adventure Gamma and Robotnik

Dr. Eggman activating E-102 Gamma, from Sonic Adventure.

As the Egg Carrier was being finished, Eggman began working on gathering the most powerful E-100 Series robots to assemble a crew to protect the aerial fortress, pitting two robots, E-101 Beta and E-102 Gamma, against each other to see which was stronger. In the end, Gamma won, but the doctor decided to use Beta for spare parts. When the Egg Carrier launched, the doctor went to Angel Island and shattered the Master Emerald, releasing Chaos in the process. Eggman followed the beast to Station Square, where he watched a battle between him and Sonic, fully confident in Chaos' power despite his defeat.

Eggman eventually managed to tame Chaos. At the Mystic Ruins the next day, he found Sonic and Tails near the latter's workshop, where he declared that he wanted the seven Chaos Emeralds and demanded the duo to give him the Emerald they had. The heroes refused, resulting in a battle in which the doctor piloted an Egg Hornet-based Egg Mobile. Despite his defeat, Eggman managed to snatch the Chaos Emerald from Tails' hands while the fox's guard was down, and presented Chaos to his nemeses, demonstrating his power by giving him the Emerald, transforming him into Chaos 1, just as the stone tablets had predicted. A joyful Eggman revealed his plans to the heroes and left with Chaos.

Sonic Adventure Knuckles and Robotnik

Eggman tricking Knuckles into thinking Sonic is after the Master Emerald's shards, from Sonic Adventure.

That night, Eggman was in Station Square when he found Sonic and Tails leave Casinopolis with two Chaos Emeralds. Releasing sleeping gas from his Egg Mobile, he made the duo fall unconscious, but only took one Emerald from them. With it, he went to the nearby hotel, but was spotted by Knuckles there. Believing the stolen Chaos Emerald was a shard of the Master Emerald, the echidna confronted the doctor, who summoned Chaos and gave him the Emerald, turning him into Chaos 2, whom he sent to fight Knuckles. When Knuckles prevailed, Eggman baselessly claimed that Sonic was hunting for the Master Emerald's shards as well, allowing him to leave as the echidna fell for his lie.

The next day, Eggman returned to the Mystic Ruins, where he oversaw Knuckles fight Sonic and Tails and make them lose their two Chaos Emeralds, which he snatched and gave to Chaos, transforming him into Chaos 4. Even though the beast was defeated again by the three, the doctor managed to escape to his Egg Carrier. After shooting down Sonic and Tails pursuing in the Tornado, he tasked his E-100 robots to find Froggy, who had swallowed a Chaos Emerald and had Chaos' tail. As he revised his minions' findings, the doctor scolded them for failing to find the right frog. However, when he saw Froggy in Gamma's hands, he did not last in praising him for his effectivity, while also disposing of the other robots. It would also be revealed soon after that the doctor was gruesomely remodeling Beta to make him a better robot. Afterwards, Eggman made Gamma get Birdie, a small bird who was held captive alongside Amy in the Egg Carrier's Prison Hall, and who had a Chaos Emerald. Soon after, however, his ship was being raided by Sonic and Tails, forcing the doctor to send Gamma to fight the duo. Soon after, he encountered the hedgehog, Knuckles and Big, and summoned Chaos, giving him two more Chaos Emeralds and turning him into Chaos 6. However, when the beast was defeated, the doctor fled from the Egg Carrier, which was beginning to fall to the ocean, as Sonic tried and failed to catch him.

In the aftermath, Eggman resorted to launching a missile in order to destroy Station Square to avenge the destruction of the Egg Carrier. The missile failed to detonate on impact, and was disarmed completely by Tails. Furious, the doctor attacked the fox in his Egg Walker machine. After a fight, the villain was defeated, forcing him to retreat to the Final Egg. On his way, he was spotted by Sonic, and engaged in one final showdown with the hedgehog in his base, piloting the Egg Viper. This attempt to defeat his nemesis ended in failure, however, and the base was leveled.

SADX Super Sonic story intro

Eggman and Knuckles having been knocked unconscious by Chaos, from Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

Retreating through the jungle, a fuming Dr. Eggman discovered Chaos had survived the battle on the Egg Carrier. The creature, however, went rogue and attacked the doctor, who fled towards Angel Island to seek help from Knuckles. Chaos followed him there and found six of the Chaos Emeralds, taking them all and knocking out both the echidna and Eggman. Sonic and Tails arrived shortly after to investigate why Angel Island had not yet ascended back into the sky, and found the victims unconscious. When he recovered, the villain vowed to take revenge on Chaos and set off back to his ruined base, where the Egg Carrier 2 was docked in case a scenario like this was possible. Later, when the creature became Perfect Chaos after consuming the last Emerald, he traveled to Station Square and flooded the city, leaving it in ruins. The doctor attacked Chaos in the Egg Carrier 2, but this had no effect; with one blast, Perfect Chaos managed to completely decimate Eggman's ship, with the doctor sent hurtling off in the explosion that followed. He was soon after revealed to have survived though, only turning up again just in time to witness Sonic's victory against Chaos, before withdrawing in his Egg Mobile.

Sonic Shuffle[]

In Sonic Shuffle, Dr. Eggman learned of the power of the Precioustone and followed Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy into Maginaryworld in hopes of stealing the powerful gem.[55] Although he would confront his enemies on several occasions, his plans were never realized.

Sonic Adventure 2[]

Sonic Adeventure 2 Eggman Entrance

Dr. Eggman attacking the military base on Prison Island, from Sonic Adventure 2.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Dr. Eggman happened to come across the diary of his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, wherein he found out about a top-secret military weapon called "Project Shadow" that was shut down over fifty years ago. Eager to use this weapon for his own plans, the doctor, armed with his Eggwalker, attacked Prison Island, where the weapon was resting, and broke into its underground base.[56][57] Happening upon the cryogenic vault where Gerald's weapon was sealed, the villain inserted his grandfather's password: MARIA, and then inserted a Chaos Emerald into the control console. The vault opened, releasing the ultimate lifeform: Shadow the Hedgehog. In gratitude for being released, Shadow offered to grant his creator's grandson one wish. He then demonstrated his power to his new master by destroying a B-3x Hot Shot in ten seconds.[58] Impressed, Eggman asked the black hedgehog about the wish he had mentioned, but the latter interrupted him, telling him to bring the Chaos Emeralds and that he would be waiting at the central control room onboard the Space Colony ARK before leaving.[59]

On his way back to his Hidden Base, Eggman picked up and followed a signal, encountering Rouge the Bat and Knuckles, who were fighting over the Master Emerald. He attempted to steal it, but the echidna shattered it to pieces to prevent its theft. Not really needing the giant Emerald anyways, the doctor returned to his base, clearing out the G.U.N. forces, and caught up on the news. A newsflash announcing the theft of a Chaos Emerald from the national reserve bank caught his attention, and although the media and public had identified the culprit as Sonic, Eggman knew it was actually Shadow.

Using his base's space transporter, Eggman beamed himself to the ARK to meet with Shadow. There, the black hedgehog revealed the Eclipse Cannon, a weapon of mass destruction capable of destroying a planet or piercing a star. The cannon required the seven Chaos Emeralds to meet its immense power demands, and two had already been installed. Rouge - who had boarded the ARK by sneaking into the Hidden Base and accessing his transporter - revealed herself and offered her services. Although Eggman was suspicious of her motives, she provided another Emerald and was offering to help him obtain the others. The doctor agreed to let the bat join him and Shadow in their hunt.

Don'tFailMe

Thanks to Rouge's intelligence reports, three more Chaos Emeralds were discovered on Prison Island, locked away in the cargo area in G.U.N.'s military research facility. Eggman organized a strategy that would allow him and his cohorts to obtain them. His part in the plan was to divert G.U.N.'s forces so that the bat could enter the vaults unnoticed and Shadow could plant high explosives in the armory to destroy the entire island.[60][61] When the trio made their move, however, they were interrupted by the untimely arrival of Amy Rose, who had mistaken the black hedgehog for Sonic. The doctor moved in to try and deal with her but was stopped by Tails in his new Cyclone, whom he engaged while having his crew do their tasks.[62] Running on a strict timetable, the villain let the heroes leave alive and made his escape, although not before making clear that the next time they encountered each other, his foes "won't be so lucky." Afterwards, he informed Shadow and Rouge that, thanks to this setback, they had no other option but to set the detonation timer of the explosives to fifteen minutes to make up for the wasted time, with Rouge remarking that five minutes was all she needed to recover the Chaos Emeralds stored in the vault. After the black hedgehog took longer than expected to evacuate, Eggman called in and demanded that he escape immediately before he got caught in the destruction of the island. Eggman also saved Sonic, who had been fighting Shadow to a stalemate when he called, unknowingly alerting the blue hedgehog that he needed to regroup and escape with Tails and Amy. Despite certain delays, including Shadow having to save Rouge via Chaos Control when she was pinned down at the vault, the mission was a success and the group returned to the ARK with the three Chaos Emeralds while Prison Island was consumed in fiery explosion.

Long Live For His Empire

Dr. Eggman making his threat to the world, from Sonic Adventure 2.

Now having six Chaos Emeralds powering the Eclipse Cannon, Dr. Eggman announced to the world that the Eggman Empire would arise and dominate the planet. To show off his power, he fired the cannon at the moon, destroying half of it.[63][64] Three hours later, the doctor delivered an ultimatum to the President of the United Federation: the government had twenty-four hours to surrender with no resistance or the villain would destroy the entire country, but these negotiations failed.[65][note 2] Additionally, Sonic and Tails intervened and discovered that the scientist was at the ARK, forcing him to withdraw his threat. In addition, because the Eclipse Cannon was not fully charged with the seven Chaos Emeralds, Eggman was unable to make due with his threat due to it requiring a recharge time of several hours. To his fortune though, Rouge gave him a newspaper that revealed that Tails had been awarded the last Emerald after having saved Station Square, and as such had her and later Shadow track the fox down. Although neither of them were able to stop them, the doctor was undeterred, as he already had anticipated the possibility of their arrival and made arrangements for it.

Dr. Eggman was later waiting at his Hidden Base for Sonic and his friends to storm it. When that happened, the doctor unleashed his Egg Golem robot to destroy them and get their Chaos Emerald. A battle ensued and the hedgehog damaged a restraining mechanism on the giant's head, causing it to malfunction and attack the scientist, who was forced to destroy his own creation in defense, giving his nemeses the time they needed to hijack his space shuttle.[66] In the aftermath, the villain gave a status report to Rouge about how they had escaped, and also ended up giving her the password for the computer files and the Eclipse Cannon upon her request. Eggman later went to the ARK after detecting two separate Chaos Emerald energy signatures, deducing that Sonic and his friends had a decoy as well as the real gem as a counterattack, also ordering Shadow to stand down as he intended to deal with them personally.[67] When he returned to the colony, the doctor took Amy hostage and held her at gunpoint, demanding that she divulge Sonic's and Tails' current locations under the threat of killing her. After this, he then presumably either ambushed the fox or hijacked his communication lines and told him to tell the blue hedgehog that Amy was being held hostage and ordering him to meet him at the main laboratory if she was to survive. Upon his Sonic's arrival, the villain ordered him to place the Chaos Emerald in the center of the room. Believing it to be the fake Emerald (a belief that was also unwittingly confirmed by Tails when asking him how he deduced it), Eggman then sprung his trap and sealed Sonic inside a containment capsule, which was ejected into space where it exploded, seemingly killing him instantly, much to the doctor's ecstasy.[68]

With nemesis out of the way, Dr. Eggman turned his attention to Tails and the two battled each other in their respective walkers. In the aftermath, the doctor was defeated, but managed to come out of the fight with the real Chaos Emerald while Tails and Amy were distracted with Sonic revealing himself to be alive. He made his way back to the Eclipse Cannon, but later reported to Shadow that someone (Sonic) was making his way to the cannon. As he laughed in triumph upon placing the final Emerald in, danger signs appeared on every monitor on the colony, followed by an image of Gerald Robotnik. A message left behind by his late grandfather stated that the world had sentenced him to death for death of Maria Robotnik during G.U.N.'s raid on the ARK, and that he would have his revenge by destroying the earth. A program within the colony's main computer had been activated which would destabilize the ARK's orbit and send it crashing into the planet, wiping out all life.[69]

Dr. Eggman convened with the heroes (and was visibly annoyed to see that Sonic was still alive) and showed them Gerald's diary. He then informed them that the Eclipse Cannon's core had overloaded with Chaos Emerald energy and the collision would obliterate the entire planet. The doctor was the one who suggested that they all work together to try and neutralize the Chaos Emeralds with the restored Master Emerald and stop the ARK's collision. With Eggman monitoring the ARK's layout and guiding the others down their respective paths, Knuckles and Sonic managed to neutralize the Chaos Emeralds while Shadow defeated the Biolizard. He later informed them about the Biolizard's survival and merging with the space colony in order to keep it on its collision course, prompting Sonic and Shadow turn into their super states to fight the behemoth. The hedgehogs destroyed the Finalhazard and returned the ARK back to its proper position in orbit, though Shadow fell to Earth and died from atmospheric re-entry. In the aftermath, Eggman had a conversation with Tails about how he looked up to his grandfather and disbelief that he tried to destroy the world and humanity before everyone left the colony to return home.

At some point after this incident, Eggman discovered that Shadow was still alive, albeit amnesiac and unconscious, when everyone had pronounced him dead. As such, he sent one of his robots to retrieve him.[70] Afterwards, he would place him in a stasis capsule in one of his bases.[71]

In Sonic Advance, Dr. Eggman hatched yet another dastardly plot to build his Dr. Eggman Empire, this time by turning Animals into robots. As a side quest, he also sought to find the seven Chaos Emeralds to gain unimaginable power.[72] However, the doctor met resistance from Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. He fought them several times with various mechs, until they eventually reached his base, X-Zone, located in space. After being defeated, he confronted Super Sonic on the moon using the Super Egg Robot, but this effort ended in failure too.

Sonic Advance 2[]

In Sonic Advance 2, Dr. Eggman deviced yet another nasty scheme to conquer the world and build Eggmanland. This time, he was planning to establish a Dr. Eggman Empire by kidnapping Animals and cramming them into robots. As part of his operations, he also managed to abduct Tails and Knuckles,[73][74] as well as a young girl called Cream the Rabbit and her mother, Vanilla;[75] in the case of the echidna, he tricked him once again into thinking Sonic had become evil to lure him to his side.[76]

When Sonic learned of Eggman's plans and set off to defeat him, the doctor would face him on repeated occasions with his mechs, but had little success in defeating him. After the hedgehog reunited with all of his friends, they faced the villain once again in his base: the Egg Utopia, and then in his satelite: XX. Upon his defeat and the destruction of the Egg Utopia, however, a vengeful Eggman went back to the surface of earth and used a new mech to kidnap Vanilla once again, taking her to space. Fortunately, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and defeated his nemesis after a mighty showdown, rescuing the adult rabbit in the aftermath.

Sonic Advance 3[]
Eggman SA3 intro

Dr. Eggman about to split the earth with Chaos Control, from Sonic Advance 3.

In Sonic Advance 3, following the Emerl incident, as part of a scheme to build Eggmanland for once, Eggman used the leftover data of the destroyed robot to build a successor of his own: Gemerl. With at least one Chaos Emerald, the doctor performed a planetary scale Chaos Control that split the earth into seven pockets of reality that he would annex into the Dr. Eggman Empire at a later point.[77] However, Sonic and Tails immediately started an adventure to reunite with their friends, find the seven Chaos Emeralds and defeat the villain. Along the way, Eggman, accompanied by Gemerl, made several attempts to stop the heroes that ended in vain.

After his defeat at Chaos Angel, Eggman tried to steal the Master Emerald at its altar using the Hyper Eggrobo, but was once again stopped by Sonic and his friends. However, Gemerl betrayed his creator and used the seven Chaos Emeralds to turn into Ultimate Gemerl. After the treacherous robot dropped the Emeralds and went to space, the villain and Sonic, transformed into Super Sonic, teamed up to stop him. Eventually, the unlikely allies defeated Gemerl, leading to the robot and the hedgehog falling into the earth. What happened to the doctor afterwards remains uncertain.

Sonic Heroes[]

In Sonic Heroes, Dr. Eggman constructed his new ultimate weapon: a massive fleet of battleships called the Egg Fleet. He planned to use this fleet to conquer the world in three days, and even sent a letter to Team Sonic revealing his plan.[78] However, before making any moves, he was locked away in his own flagship by Neo Metal Sonic, who impersonated him and took command of his fleet. Through unknown means, the doctor sent a walkie-talkie to Team Chaotix, whom he hired in order to break free, promising to pay them a lot of money.[79]

Doctor Eggman, I presume

Throughout the incident, Eggman would communicate to the Chaotix through his walkie-talkie, giving them various tasks until they reached the Egg Fleet. After the detectives defeated Neo Metal Sonic in the Egg Emperor, they broke the villain free, who tried (with no success) to convince them to let him be, promising to pay them after conquering the world.[80] When the crew asked Eggman for answers Eggman was about to tell them only for Neo Metal Sonic to reveal himself and began transforming into Metal Madness. The doctor, reuniting with Teams Sonic, Rose, Dark, and Chaotix, assessed that they would need the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds to defeat him. Fortunately, the teams had already collected them and used them so that Team Sonic would super transform and defeat Neo Metal Sonic, now having turned into Metal Overlord. With the treacherous robot defeated, Eggman tried to sneak away from the Chaotix without paying but was seen and began running away from them.

Sonic Battle[]

Sonic Battle upset Eggman

Dr. Eggman attempting to order the Gizoid, from Sonic Battle.

In Sonic Battle, after revisiting his grandfather's journal, Dr. Eggman discovered the existence of a weapon of mass destruction known as the Gizoid, which he planned to use to power a Final Egg Blaster that could destroy the planet.[81] By using this robot's raw data, he also created a mass-produced copy of it known as E-121 Phi.[82][83] Around this time too, the doctor began experimenting using the energy of the shards of a Chaos Emerald he had crushed to power his inventions, using some old robots for his tests.[82][84] Amongst these included E-102 Gamma, who was remodeled into a new machine nicknamed Chaos Gamma. This model and the Phis were all powered by the shards of the Emerald, and programmed to find the remaining gems.[82] They also obeyed him thanks to a device he created called the "Emerald condenser".[85]

Later on, Eggman attempted to use the Gizoid for his nasty plans. However, he was upset at seeing that the robot would not listen to even basic instructions, even after beating it up and giving it a whole Chaos Emerald. Having the Phis and Chaos Gamma anyway, the doctor discarded the Gizoid and left it to rot at the Emerald Beach.[83][82] Afterwards, the villain hacked into the government's computer at Central City,[86] where he found out that, in order for the Gizoid to obey him, he had to establish a "Link" with it. Soon, he was confronted by Rouge, whom he used to put one of his Phis to test. However, after seeing that this robot severely underperformed against the bat, Eggman ran off to search for the Gizoid.

Around three days later, Eggman sent three of his Phis after the Gizoid, who was now under Sonic's possession, with another Chaos Emerald, and now nicknamed "Emerl". After this failed, he confronted the robot and Knuckles at Emerald Town, deploying two more Phis. When this had no success either, the villain took advantage of the echidna's gullibility and lured the duo to his base, Gimme Shelter, in Night Babylon. There, he managed to trap Knuckles in his "ultra powerful" "spiky rodent trap". With one hero out, the doctor revealed his plans and left the scene, leaving Chaos Gamma to take care of Emerl. However, his robot failed his task, and the heroes escaped.

Much later, Emerl, who had now harnessed another Chaos Emerald, found himself under Amy and Cream's care. Taking advantage of the pink hedgehog leaving, Eggman made up a fake news about an Emerald being nearby to distract Sonic and Tails.[87] With his worst enemies out of the way, the doctor could easily capture the Gizoid and Cream by paralyzing the former, ordering to send the two helpless heroes to Gimme Shelter. He later made a call to a Phi, unaware that Emerl was answering instead, and revealed how to escape the fortress. Afterwards, the villain reached out to Sonic, claiming to have the robot and Cream hostage. When the hedgehog asked for proof, the scientist made another call, but no one answered, leaving him in an awkward moment with his nemesis. When he returned to Gimme Shelter, however, he found out that Emerl and Cream had defeated his robots and claimed his Chaos Emerald for themselves. The Gizoid soon after made Eggman fall into his own trap, electrocuting him alive, and then made a videocall to Sonic, showing him the paralyzed villain, who got brutally humiliated in front of his adversary.

Sonic Battle Eggman fight

Later, contemplating the poor situation he was in, Eggman, knowing that Shadow had the seventh Chaos Emerald, sent Chaos Gamma to fight him. However, the black hedgehog defeated his robot with Emerl's help. When the Gizoid had now harnessed the final Emerald, the doctor, still refusing to give up, showed up at Central City, where he found Sonic and Emerl and boldly proclaimed that his world conquest would soon be achieved. Later, the villain launched a new Death Egg, which contained the Final Egg Blaster inside. The heroes trusted the heroic robot to take care of this, and sent him to the spaceship to fight Eggman. After a mighty fight, the doctor pleaded for mercy to get Emerl's guard down, luring him into a trap that would make him obey the villain for once. However, the Gizoid could not contain all of the power inside him and went haywire, threatening to use the Final Egg Blaster to destroy the world. Fortunately, Sonic managed to prevent this catastrophe at the last second, albeit at the cost of Emerl's life.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Eggman was attempting to take over the world and build Eggmanland as usual when he suddenly found himself caught in the middle of the Black Arms' invasion of earth. As such, he made the Eggman Empire join the war against them as an independent faction.[88] As part of this, the doctor secretly built a few bases around the world,[88] including the Cryptic Castle, where Cream found herself trapped;[89] and the Circus Park, an amusement park powered by hundreds of stolen Rings.[90]

Shadow the Hedgehog Eggman and Egg Pawns

At one point, Eggman's Cryptic Castle was visited by Shadow, who helped Amy rescue Cream and Cheese.[91] Soon after, the doctor attacked both hedgehogs using his Egg Breaker, but was defeated. In the aftermath, he watched the war between the Black Arms and G.U.N. only progress with no signs of ending soon. Knowing that the conflict would leave him with no city to conquer, the villain decided to deploy his Egg Fleet to fight them.[92]

After a series of unspecified events, Eggman arrived with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Rouge at the Black Comet to stop Shadow from handing over the seven Chaos Emeralds to Black Doom, the Black Arms' leader. The alien, however, took the Emeralds and used an enhanced Chaos Control to transport the Comet to the surface, intending to use humans as energy sources for the Black Arms. Before Eggman could act, he and the others were paralyzed by a nerve gas and Black Doom unleashed the Death Leeches on them. Fortunately, Shadow was immune to the gas and thus he left to stop the alien.

Under unknown circumstances, Eggman and the others escaped the Black Comet and found some shelter from where they communicated with Super Shadow on as he fought against Devil Doom. However, some of the Comet's gas eventually leaked into the shelter, paralyzing them once again, before spreading to the rest of the planet.[93] Shortly after, the doctor confessed to the black hedgehog that he was not an android as he defeated the alien. Apparently no longer paralyzed, the villain and the others then watched as the transformed hedgehog sent the Black Comet back into space and destroyed it with the Eclipse Cannon. While the others were cheering on Shadow, Eggman tried to sneak his way out to steal the Chaos Emeralds, but was spotted by Knuckles, who gave chase to him while Sonic and his friends laughed at the two.

Sonic Rush[]

In Sonic Rush, Eggman met for the first time his descendant, Eggman Nega, who wanted his help to create what both of them saw as a dream world: an interdimensional Eggman Land. To do so, however, they needed both the Chaos Emeralds and the seven Sol Emeralds from the Sol Dimension.[94] As such, the present-day doctor was guided by his descendant to this alternate dimension, where he stole the Emeralds after defeating their guardian, Blaze the Cat.[95][96][97]

Egg-Mobiles-Sonic-Rush

Later on, after returning to Sonic's universe, Eggman encountered Blaze once again, who demanded him to hand over the Sol Emeralds to her. When the doctor refused to comply, the two had a confrontation where the cat came on top and claimed one Emerald. The two would meet again five more times, where the heroine would collect all but one of the gems. At the Dead Line, the villain, impressed by her persistance, confronted her once again. However, Sonic, who was also involved in the skirmish, entered the scene and had a misunderstanding with Blaze that culminated in a fight between the two heroes as Eggman and Nega watched. After this battle, the cat snatched the last Sol Emerald from Eggman while Nega escaped. Later, while Sonic and Blaze were putting the differences aside, the villains kidnapped Cream, with the present-day doctor sending a latter claiming that he was holding the rabbit hostage and telling the cat to meet him on her own. The two adversaries soon after had an epic showdown with Eggman piloting the Egg King, once again. However, he was defeated, and Blaze reunited with Cream.

Regrouping after their defeats, Eggman and Nega used their Egg Salamander to attack Blaze while she was alone and drain the Sol Emeralds of their power. Then, Sonic showed up with all seven Chaos Emeralds, which he knew how to keep stable. Regardless, the villains chose to depart to prepare themselves for their showdown with the hedgehog and make their interdimensional Eggman Land a reality. Soon after, they were confronted by Super Sonic and Burning Blaze in Exception. There, their machine was destroyed by the heroes. After that, Sonic's and Blaze's dimensions separated.

Sonic Riders[]

In Sonic Riders, Dr. Eggman found a legend about a boy who received an Angel Wing from the ancient Babylonians, with which he was about to rule the world. Eager to unearth this advanced technology, which was sealed within Babylon Garden, for himself, the doctor visited the Babylon Rogues, the descendants of the Babylonians, and informed them about the key to Babylon Garden and its requirement of the seven Chaos Emeralds, whilst enlisting the Rogues as contestants into his EX World Grand Prix competition.[98]

After Jet brought Babylon Garden up from beneath the earth using the seven Chaos Emeralds, as per Eggman's instructions, the doctor stole the control box and took off to the Garden to fulfil his own purpose. Sonic caught up with the villain, but the latter managed to hold Amy hostage. The blue hedgehog proceeded to blow his nemesis away, along with the pink hedgehog in the process, while reclaiming the control box.

When the Babylon Rogues and Team Heroes observed the treasure after having defeated the Babylon Guardian, Eggman showed up demanded them at gunpoint to hand over the treasure. Sonic and Jet exchanged grin at each other and complied, granting the doctor the glorious treasure was a Magic Carpet. While he was intrigued by the look and feel of the carpet, he then fainted out of shock, disappointed at the treasure's apparent lack of value.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Dr. Eggman learned of the "Flames of Disaster" that were contained inside of Princess Elise the Third of Soleanna.[99] As such, he set up a new base, White Acropolis, where he began researching about the Solaris Project, an ambitious project named after Soleanna's sun god, Solaris. Thanks to his investigation, he discovered that this failed project had ended with the unleashing of the god in the form of two halves: Iblis, who was the Flames of Disaster, and Mephiles the Dark, who was trapped inside of the Scepter of Darkness.[100][101] After discovering that Solaris' powers could manipulate the fabric of time itself, he made a new plan that involved kidnapping Princess Elise to harness the Flames of Disaster and find the seven Chaos Emeralds, which were the key to the flames' secret.[102][103][104] This way, he could harness the god's powers to conquer the world in its past, present, and future.[103] To advance his plans, he also built a new Egg Carrier and adquired the Scepter of Darkness through unknown means. Additionally, he managed to create a "Solaris prototype" that would allow him to control the flow of time at will.[105]

Sonic the hedgehog-4083-834 0010

During the Festival of the Sun's opening ceremony, Eggman showed up and attempted to kidnap Elise. However, Sonic came in and disposed of the doctor's robots, allowing him to take the princess to safety. Regardless, the villain managed to catch her soon after anyway. The next day, after realizing that Shadow and Rouge had infiltrated his base and took the Scepter of Darkness, Eggman and his army cornered them at Kingdom Valley and demanded them to hand over the Scepter. However, the antiheroes accidentally dropped it, deactivating all of the doctor's robots and liberating Mephiles. In panic, the villain was forced to retreat.

Later, at the Dusty Desert, Eggman saw Sonic and Tails attempting to rescue Elise. To delay their efforts, he deployed the Egg-Cerberus, but the hedgehog destroyed it and left with the princess. At Soleanna, however, the doctor took advantage of his nemesis being distracted by Silver the Hedgehog, a hedgehog from the future who was attempting to kill Sonic because he believed him to have unleashed Iblis, and took off with Elise once again. Later, he sent a letter to Knuckles telling Sonic to meet him at White Acropolis. There, Eggman trapped Sonic, Tails and Knuckles in a chamber and forced them to give him a Chaos Emerald to ensure Elise's safety. After they did so, he sent them to the future using the prototype of his Solaris-powered machine. Unbeknownst to him, the princess would later escape thanks to Amy's help.

Soon after, in Radical Train, Eggman was confronted by Shadow, who asked him who Mephiles was. He told him to bring the creature back to him, promising to tell him the truth if he did so. Finding Elise nearby, he caught her once again before Sonic could rescue her. Soon after though, the princess was saved by the hedgehog, but the villain, boarding the Egg Carrier, kidnapped her yet again in her castle. With her under his grasp, the doctor went to find a Chaos Emerald he had located. Unfortunately, a malfunction in the ship's systems caused it to crash, resulting in the deaths of Eggman and Elise. This thus led to Iblis being unleashed and destroying the world. Luckily however, Sonic time-travelled back in time to save the princess. To prevent his nemesis from doing so, the doctor piloted the Egg-Wyvern and confronted him while the Egg Carrier was losing attitude. Soon enough, Eggman was defeated, causing him to fall down in his chair while the hedgehog rescued Elise at the last moment as the ship crashed against a plateau.

A while later, Sonic was killed by Mephiles in front of Elise, causing her to accidentally unleash Iblis, allowing both halves to reunite into Solaris and begin destroying the world. In consequence, Eggman, who had survived the previous incident, found himself caught in a space-time rift alongside Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, and a dead Sonic. As all hope was lost, Elise proposed finding the seven Chaos Emeralds to revive Sonic. As such, the team of heroes and villains got to work to obtain them. Afterwards, with the gems' power, the dead hedgehog was resuscitated and transformed into Super Sonic. He would then transfer part of his power to Shadow and Silver, turning them into Super Shadow and Super Silver respectively. Meanwhile, Eggman and the others would watch as the transformed hedgehogs fought against Solaris in a mighty showdown.

After Elise extinguished Solaris when he was just a tiny flame, the events of the entire incident were then undone, thus ensuring that none of Eggman's actions during this period ever happened.

Sonic Rivals[]

In Sonic Rivals, Eggman's forces were taken over by Eggman Nega, who sought to dispose of his ancestor to undo all of his failures and thus make the future society recognize his brilliance.[12] Afterwards, the villain from the future masqueraded as the doctor himself and cornered him. In desperation, Eggman sent a transmission to Shadow pleading for help before getting turned into a card by Nega's new camera.[106] Fortunately, around six hours later, he was restored at the Death Yard thanks to Shadow and Silver's efforts. In gratitude, he helped escort the two hedgehogs to Nega's Meteor Base in order to foil his descendant's plans.

Stealing the Emerald, the villain left his adversaries to get buried in the collapsing cave they were in and fled to a secret base. When Sonic later caught up to him, Eggman used a trap door he had set up that dropped his nemesis deeper into his base. However, the hedgehog soon caught up to the doctor, much to the latter's surprise, who tried disposing of him with a new weapon. When this failed, the scientist fled to the Last Utopia where he used a mech powered by his Chaos Emerald to confront Sonic. However, the hero quickly defeated the mech and took back the Emerald, forcing Eggman to flee into space. There, the doctor armed himself with his final mech when Super Sonic came after him. Upon his defeat, the villain's Egg Mobile was dealt a crippling blow by Sonic, leaving Eggman to plummet down to earth.

In gameplay, Dr. Eggman appears at the end of almost every Zone driving a mech that serves as that stage's boss, much like in earlier games.

Sonic Pinball Party[]

In Sonic Pinball Party, right after having his latest attempt to conquer the world foiled by Sonic, Eggman went back to his old tricks by kidnapping the Animals coming to Casinopolis and turning them into Badniks. In the meantime, Eggman would organize the Egg Cup Tournament and brainwash Tails and Amy into serving him.

Eventually, Sonic took part in the Egg Cup Tournament in order to foil Eggman's scheme. Along the way, Sonic saved his brainwashed friends, who had joined the tournament to stop him. When Sonic won the tournament however, Eggman appeared and challenged Sonic to an additional match. At the end though, Eggman was defeated by Sonic, who liberated Eggman's prisoners.

Sonic Jump (2005)[]

In Sonic Jump, Dr. Eggman had invented the "Brainwash Beam", a device that would allow him to take control of the minds of others. Building it on a space station so it would able to affect the whole world, all Eggman needed was the energy of the seven Chaos Emeralds to power it. While tracking down the Emeralds however, Eggman went after Tails when the fox cub caught wind of his activities. Kidnapping Tails right before Sonic's eyes, Eggman got onboard a helicopter with Tails and traveled to his flying fortress where he imprisoned Tails. Sonic soon after came to Tails' rescue though. Making his escape, Eggman warned Sonic that he had obtained six of the Chaos Emeralds, and that there was only one left to find.

Eggman subsequently traveled to Angel Island to get the last Chaos Emerald from Knuckles. While demanding the Emerald from the echidna however, Eggman would snatch it when Knuckles got distracted by Sonic and Tails' arrival. Eggman then gloated about his plan to the heroes before making his escape to South America, where he had a space station with a rocket that could take him to his Brainwash Beam in space. Although Sonic and co. were hot on his tail, Eggman managed to leave in his rocket before they caught him. Unfortunately for Eggman, Sonic would follow him into space and destroy the space station hosting the Brainwash Beam, which also scattered the Chaos Emeralds across earth. Despite this, Eggman managed to get a hold of one of the Emeralds and hide out in space. However, Sonic soon tracked Eggman down and claimed his Emerald after defeating Eggman in his latest mech. In the aftermath, Eggman disappeared, although not before swearing revenge.

Animation[]

Sonic the Animation[]

How does he do that with glasses

Dr. Eggman disguised as Sonic, from Sonic the Animation.

In Sonic the Animation, Dr. Eggman was in his base in a peaceful morning when he saw a newspaper saying that Sonic had been named the "Man of the Year". He also saw this announcement on TV, much to his fury. In a fit of rage, the villain attempted to turn the TV off, only to trip into some litter on the floor. He then grabbed a Sonic doll from there and violently strangled it. However, his mood suddenly lightened up when a he had new plan in mind.

Afterwards, as Sonic was running through some buildings in the nearby city, Eggman, disguised as him, began causing chaos there, commiting vandalism and disrupting the traffic. Later, he was standing on a rooftop as he saw the hedgehog himself being booed by the public, who had now given him the "Worst Man of the Year" title. Pleased with the results, the overjoyed doctor celebrated his success, but lost his balance and fell off.

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 The placement of both Sonic the Hedgehog CD and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in the canon timeline was ambiguous and a point of controversy for years, with some people, including Sega staff, claiming that the latter game was placed first, with others stating otherwise. In the end however, Sonic Origins confirmed that, in the canon, Sonic the Hedgehog CD happened after Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit), followed by Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit).
  2. In the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow mentions that negotiations with the United Federation government failed after Dr. Eggman had destroyed half of the moon. On the other hand, in the English dub, possibly due to a misinterpretation, the black hedgehog simply states that their threats fell on deaf ears.

I got those Bird Brains to believe that Babylon treasure was just a gem. I can't believe they fell for it. What fools! Can you believe the real treasure is the ancient, but advanced technology of the Babylonians? What irony! I've found a story about a boy who received an Angel Wing from the Babylonians as a gift. The story says that with it, the boy was able to rule the world. And this was just a gift!! I'm anxious to find this technology as soon as possible. Imagine the vast possibilities of the technology they must have kept for themselves. Hehehehehehe! "
