Not to be confused with Diablon, the boss from Shadow the Hedgehog.

Diablo is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He is a mobian wolf and a member of the Wolf Pack.[1]

Appearance[]

Diablo is a brown furred mobian wolf with blue eyes. He wears a blue vest and gold wrist bands.

History[]

Aiding the Knothole Freedom Fighters[]

During the closing days of the First Robotnik War, Diablo took part in the joint Knothole Freedom Fighter-Wolf Pack attack on Robotropolis when Sally Acorn was severely wounded.[2]

Journey Home[]

After the Wolf Pack left the reclaimed city of Mobotropolis following the demise of Dr. Robotnik, Diablo asked his fellow pack mates "Of all the places available, why on Mobius would they want to live there?" to which Lupe replied that to them it was home. When the Wolf Pack arrived at the Great Canyon and were surprised to see it filled with water, Diablo pointed out he brought a raft with him. As they got close to the other side of the canyon, Diablo explained the weather was making it difficult for him and Reynard to continue rowing, though Lupe ordered them to continue as they were nearing land. After they arrived ashore, he began letting the air out of the raft so he could store it, though Canus told him to leave it behind as the weather continued to get worse and they didn't have time to waste. While entering the ruins of a city, Diablo heard sounds of something in one of the abandoned buildings. As it turned out, the noise was none other than the orphaned Overlander twins Aerial and Athena.[3][4]

That night, Diablo watched as Aerial played with her toy ball. After she dropped it, he picked it up and took the opportunity to try and teach her a sense of morals. Diablo asked "If someone does you a turn, shouldn't you offer to return the favor?" to which Aerial said she "guessed so" and thanked him for returning her ball. When Canus asked if he thought she'd remember the lesson, he replied she was just a young girl, and he was more concerned about the other Pack members, who were searching the ruins of the city for supplies.[5]

Capture and Escape[]

After locating the ruins of their once great city, Diablo was skeptical about finding any answers as to the location of Lupe's family, stating "As much as I want to believe otherwise, I can't see a thing that gives me hope!" Moments later, Diablo and the whole Wolf Pack were attacked by a missile, which unleashed a gas that rendered them unconscious. After the group awoke in captivity, Lupe made a joke to lighten the mood. Diablo responded "While I can appreciate a need for levity at a time like this, I think we're having company!" upon hearing the sound of metal clanging footsteps. After Lupe was roboticized, Diablo followed Lupe's orders to run, but not before asking about her, adding that they couldn't just leave her behind. However, Lupe's final wish with her free will was to remain with her family, and thus Diablo and the Wolf Pack fled without her. Diablo later created a grave marking for Lupe.[6]

Fleeing From the Nanites[]

After Lupe and her family were de-roboticized by the Bem, the Wolf Pack reassembled. When A.D.A.M. began controlling the Nanites and erected a giant city, the Wolf Pack ran from the scene. As Reynard pointed out the nanites were relentless in their expansion, Diablo cut him off, telling him to skip the analysis and keep running.[7]

Personality[]

Diablo is the big group grouch, very stubborn, and is always picking fights. He usually ends up getting into fights with Reynard. Diablo is a highly practical, forward-thinking individual, though he is also contemplative and quiet. He generally holds great respect for Lupe as a leader, though he is always willing to give his assessment on a situation. He is somewhat prone to arguing with Reynard due to their opposing viewpoints-his optimism clashing with Reynard's negativity-and was willing to teach the Overlander girls, Aerial and Athena, good manners even before their induction into the Pack. He possesses a wealth of wisdom and experience, which he is always willing to share.[8]

Trivia[]

  • The name "Diablo" is the Spanish word for "devil".
  • There has sometimes been confusion between Diablo and Reynard, as the two look very similar in appearance. Their main distinguishing feature is Diablo wears a blue vest, while Reynard wears a green one. An error on the first page of the Wolf Pack's story in SSS #11 mistakenly had Lupe call him Reynard, though on the page after his she properly addressed him as Diablo.
