Dodgy dunes drop drastically!

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia[1]

Desert Dodge is the third stage in SegaSonic the Hedgehog.

Overview[]

The main danger of Desert Dodge is four tornadoes that rotate around each other, chasing the player throughout the stage. The tornadoes appear from the start of the stage, chasing the player down a desert path riddled with cacti, stones, mini-tornadoes, quicksand, and collapsing areas of the sandy path. After several turns, a bug-like robot appears, and swerves above the player, attacking if they slow down for too long. The direction changes again, and the player must manoeuvre through obstacles resembling eight blue and purple spheres formed into an archlike shape.

The direction changes twice more, but now all previous elements (except the arches composed of spheres) are included in this stretch of sand, including a different type of sand that slows the player down. After this stretch, the player must navigate their way through an ocean of quicksand, into which the player will sink if they stay still too long, to the end of the stage.

Trivia[]

  • In the "Revision A" prototype of SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Desert Dodge is simply known as "Desert Zone", and appears as the fifth (and last) playable stage.
  • This is the very first stage in the Sonic series to incorporate the desert theme.
